The mirror has always been the enemy. The reflection a mockery of the person I want to be. Every day I battle with gender and body dysphoria—it colors every aspect of my world.
I struggled with my own existence—until I meet Giovanni—an unexpected solace amidst life's turmoil. A traumatic experience deepens our bond, birthing an unspoken trust between us.
Giovanni gives me the strength to embrace myself and to discover love and connection where chaos once reigned. Now, I have to embark on a journey of self-discovery and learn to love myself and the person reflected in the mirror.
I want to preface this by saying I am a fanatic when it comes to fantasy books, but while I have occasionally read fiction, it is not my go-to genre.
This book, though, was absolutely incredible. The author has done a tremendous job giving us a story from the perspective of such a unique and wonderful human being. Pheonix is incredible throughout the story as they journey through their life with all the heartaches and pain that occur in so many young adults past and present. But while this story can break your heart wide open as you hurt for these characters, it also does such a phenomenal job repairing your heart as you see Pheonix and Giovanni truly love and care about each other as they tackle all that life throws at them.
This book handles a slew of different issues facing our society today about inclusivity and acceptance along with tragedy and mental health issues. The writing does not wear kid gloves as it discusses so many important topics, but is also done in such a way that you feel every bit of love, support, and compassion exuded by not only Pheonix and Giovanni but their parents as well.
I will never be able to express the full range of emotions I experienced while reading this story, so do yourself a favor and pick it up for yourself.
This author knows how to rip your heart out and piece it back together. Omg I cried so much. This book was absolutely beautiful.

Phoenix and Giovanni are such amazing characters. Check the trigger warnings. The trauma that was overcome. The healing in this book was just great to read about.
I loved the supportive family members as well. Honestly everything about this book was just powerful. I recommend so much.
First,I want to thank the author for writing this book, this story has many elements to it,but they don't all come at you at once. Rayona writes about self hate, trauma, self love, love, support, and stepping out of your comfort zone.
This book takes you on a journey of young Phoenix, they don't know who they are,but they want to find out. In this journey Phoenix goes through body hate,self-harm,figuring out their gender, going through trials and tribulations. Phoenix not only deals with that, but they also experience trauma.
In this journey, Phoenix learns to not only love themselves, but they also have the support of family and friends.
Rayona Lovely Wilson has written a very heart touching, relatable, heartbreaking and mental health awareness story. That being different on the inside and out is nothing to be ashamed of,that loving who you are is what Matters, that having close friends, family and a loving support system can not only help find who you are,but also find who you want to be.

This book was beautiful. Heart wrenching. Transporting. I truly felt as though I was inside the perspective of the main character. This story is a true coming of age while also dealing with the intersectionality of race, gender, sexuality, mental health, neurodivergence, and just being a teenager. I have never read a book where I felt so much so quickly for a main character. I highly recommend and also, please read trigger warnings!
I...don't know where to begin with this book. I absolutely loved it, though there were definitely tears (happy and sad). The journey Phoenix takes to discover who they are and be happy with it, as well as experience acceptance from those around them, was beautifully written. TW: Bullying, Sexual assault, Self-harm, Eating disorders, Trauma, Attempted suicide, Discussion of Mental Health, Portrayals of depression, Anxiety
Very interesting book and story. I have the pretty and colourful special edition so that was fun to read and the artwork was amazing. I loved the dedication at the beginning of the book, definitely make sure you read it. The spacing and way it was laid out throughout the book took me a bit of getting used to but I definitely enjoyed the story. Phoenix was struggling to accept themselves throughout most of the book and I could associate with that because although I'm not non binary I have always struggled with how I looked, how I saw my weight and just my opinion about myself in general as I've never really liked myself. Giovanni was a great and positive character, we all need a Giovanni in our lives lol. I would definitely recommend this book especially to anyone struggling with mental health, self identity or just general life worries. Please make sure to look at the trigger warnings before reading though.
Phoenix and Giovanni was a good as a person who likes to learn about people from other walks of life. I have read other LGBTQ+ books and felt like they show me other sides and help me to understand more.
This book did just that. A lot of the times we as people do not understand why people are the way that they are. This doesn’t go just for LGBTQ+ but also for people from other cultures as well. I enjoyed the writing and the fact that the writer was very current and used references that I understand.
The storyline made sense and was easy to follow along. If you wouldn’t recommend this to children but 8th grade and up maybe a mature 7th grader but this would be one you’d have to guide your 7th grader through. There were parts that made me smile, laugh and want to throw the phone across the room. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Let me preface this review by telling you to read the trigger warnings. Phoenix and Giovanni handles heavy subject matter and it may not be for everyone to read but I do hope you give it a chance because it is so worth the read.
Blown Away. Sucked in. Couldn't put it down. Just a few short phrases to describe my feelings and I delved into Phoenix and Giovanni.
Phoenix is the story of a non-binary who is discovering themselves. It is a place we have all been in during our younger years and even in our adult lives. My heart ached for Phoenix as I read their journey. The journey of self-love, healing, and most importantly forgiveness. Rayona handles mental health awareness delicately and in a way that is relatable. It is something I wish more authors would write about and bring awareness to. Phoenix and Giovanni had me in tears, laughing, and feeling Phoenix's pain as they navigated through high school. It is a beautiful coming of age story and I thank Rayona for having the courage to write such a tough but crucial story. It is one of those stories that as you're reading, you don't realize just how much you needed to read it.
Rayona is a first time author for me but this will definitely be the first of many things I read from her.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. My heart was literally breaking while I was sobbing reading this story. Luckily, at the end, everything was all great again, and my heart was content.
This book was amazing! It ripped my heart out and brought many things to light! This story follows Phoenix who is non binary and is trying to find themselves. Phoenix is struggling with a lot, self identity, anxiety, depression, ptsd, some mental illness, she meets Giovanni after a really hard day at school and immediately he sees Phoenix.. Giovanni gets Phoenix out of comfort zones and they fall in love, a young blossoming love! Phoenix deals with some very sensitive experiences and emotions.. This story was the perfect example of a great friendship and how the world sees people who may seems different. I feel in love with the characters and the story and love expressed through this book!! I would recommend it to all young people! Thank you Rayona Wilson for allowing me to Arc read this!! It will always hope a special place in my reading journey! Can’t wait to dive into more of your work!! Amazing book 5/5!
Please check the trigger warnings list before reading this book. ❤️
Do you love YA romance? Do you love reading coming of age stories? If you want to read a book that puts you in your feels and gives you a new perspective on life, this book is definitely for you. This book is filled with a blooming romance based on a different kind of trust that you don’t typically see in novels. The main characters navigate through hardship and tear your heart with theirs. I was absolutely enthralled the entire time I was reading. I read it within an hour, but it felt like I lived a whole life. This book had me on an emotional roller coaster, there were points where I was laying on my stomach giggling like a teenage girl, others that had me SOBBING - I’m not one to cry over books either, but it’s so easy to relate to them, I adore the main characters and love their perseverance.
I haven't read any other novels written in poetry format. It took a moment to get used to, but I loved it once I did. This is a beautifully written and emotional journey that is heartfelt. I love Phoenix and identify with some of their struggles. before reading this do pay attention to the trigger warnings. They are there for a reason.
Phoenix and Giovanni" by Rayona Lovely Wilson delves into the deeply personal journey of Phoenix, a non-binary individual grappling with gender and body dysphoria in the modern-day USA. Through Phoenix's eyes, readers are invited to witness a poignant exploration of identity, friendship, and the transformative power of self-acceptance.
The plot centers around Phoenix's daily battle with dysphoria, symbolized by the adversarial relationship with their own reflection. However, Phoenix finds unexpected solace in Giovanni, a male friend whose presence becomes a beacon of hope amidst life's turmoil. A traumatic experience strengthens their bond, fostering an unspoken trust that propels Phoenix towards self-discovery and love.
Wilson deftly crafts characters that resonate with authenticity. Phoenix emerges as a vulnerable yet resilient protagonist, while Giovanni provides steadfast support and understanding. The setting, primarily Phoenix's home and high school, serves as a backdrop that offers insight into their personal struggles and provides a sense of security amidst chaos.
Themes of bullying, mental health, and self-acceptance permeate the narrative, underscoring the destructive impact of societal pressures on individual well-being. Through Phoenix's journey, Wilson delivers a powerful message about the importance of embracing one's true self, despite external challenges.
Wilson's writing style, reminiscent of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment," reflects the fragmented nature of Phoenix's thoughts and emotions. While initially challenging, the choppy dialogue serves to immerse readers in Phoenix's inner turmoil, offering a raw and intimate portrayal of their experiences.
The pacing of the story is consistent, mirroring the gradual unfolding of Phoenix's journey towards self-acceptance. While there are no traditional plot twists, the narrative reaches a crescendo where Phoenix confronts their reflection with newfound acceptance, symbolizing a transformative moment of self-realization.
The overarching theme of mental health is underscored by Wilson's nuanced portrayal of Phoenix's struggles and triumphs. Through their journey, readers are invited to confront their own perceptions of identity and the importance of fostering a supportive environment for individuals navigating similar challenges.
In conclusion, "Phoenix and Giovanni" is a poignant and impactful story that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. Despite its brevity, Wilson's narrative leaves a lasting impression, offering a powerful exploration of self-acceptance and resilience. I highly recommend this book, particularly for young adults, with the caveat of extensive trigger warnings due to its sensitive subject matter.
Trigger warnings – Bullying, sexual assault, self-harm, eating disorders, trauma, attempted suicide, discussions of mental health, portrayals of depression, anxiety.
Thank you to Rayona Lovely Wilson for your hard work and dedication to releasing this piece for others to enjoy.
Navigating through this story proved to be a challenging journey for me. Despite a shared trauma with Pheonix, establishing a connection proved difficult, as their actions and reactions differed significantly from my own experiences. However, Wilson's skillful use of descriptive language brings the narrative to life with rich and vibrant visuals. The focus on colors, sounds, and smells immerses the reader, providing a helpful anchor to the story.
The book had moments that disrupted my engagement due to factually inaccurate or nonsensical information, like being at an aquarium with a great white shark—a species impossible to keep in captivity. These disconnections hindered my overall enjoyment of the reading experience along with several spelling & grammar mistakes that I am a stickler about.
The heartwarming relationship between Pheonix and Giovanni serves as a testament to a healthy, non-toxic connection. Giovanni's care and attentiveness during Pheonix’s journey through the sharp twists and turns of self-discovery are truly remarkable and I am glad to see the main character develop throughout the story.
While acknowledging that this story may not resonate with everyone, I believe it merits a read for those seeking to explore something new and venture beyond their comfort zone in traditional reading.
I did not expect to luv this book as much as I did! It’s categorized as YA, but reads heavier. Phoenix and Giovanni explores the journey of a non- binary character struggling with body and gender dysmorphia. This book includes several difficult areas of physical and emotional trauma which had me deep in my feelings. Please be aware that this story will break your heart, so prepare the tissues! Everything was so well done from the characters to the storyline. This was a meaningful story that is truly a must read, especially for those struggling with identity and feeling lost. This book was a painful yet beautifully written battle for self love and acceptance. It made the growth in overcoming more heartfelt and impactful. The necessity of love and support in friendship was poignantly portrayed and a palpable theme woven within the story line. Please check content trigger warnings. Overall, loved this read.
Please check the trigger warnings first. This book has an incredibly important, and beautiful message. Not only does the author do an amazing job at making Phoenix so real and three dimensional, but they also delivers Phoenixs story with respect and creativity. Phoenix struggles with gender dysmorphia and those around them being unsupportive of their wishes. Phoenix meets Giovanni and the two of them almost immediately become close, and Giovanni fights for Phoenix, even against adults, asking them to respect their wishes. This is such a vital story to tell, and we can see how this rejection of their identity by those around them is so painful and real. A great glimpse into the struggles real people deal with, often in silence. I give this a 5 star rating and I can’t wait to read more by the author.
I had the privilege of being a Beta reader and what an amazing read! This book is so wemm written. I felt as if I could feel exactly what the characters were feeling and while I have not gone through what Phoenix has gone through; I was definitely picked on as a kid. This book makes me wish I had a Giovanni in my life.
I love how the author handles some very difficult topics including mental health. If you need a book that many can relate to..this book is it. While there is a certain theme, the way the author writes...many could relate to the story. If you get a chance..read this amazing work.
Wilson's Warriors #1 Likeable tale with some really confronting issues. It was well told, although I am left wondering is the gender dysphoria area showing that Phoenix has mental health issues and is part of it, because that is how it comes across, and my experience is people who have gender dysphoria tend to have a range of other mental health issues. Anyway aside from that, it was a very readable book, which made you attached to the characters and wanting to see what happened. (If it was a Colleen Hoover book you would get a second book from Giovanni';s view and three unneeded sequels)
I just want to say that I loved every part of this book. The emotional rollercoaster of events and the development of all the characters kept me engaged I can’t think of anything I’d change. I really enjoyed getting to know Phoenix, and my heart was full feeling like I was along side her and how she navigated life. The author approached realistic traumas with sensitivity and provided a unique perspective on gender identity. I highly recommend this for ages 13+, as some parts might be triggering or a bit heavy.
This book was definitely not my usual style but I absolutely loved it! I couldn't put it down and I finished it in just over an hour. The book is told from Phoenix's point of view and the formatting really makes it feel like you are in their head. I would gladly have read more and I hope that I can find another book in this style that pulls me in just as much but I doubt I will.
I just finished the phenomenal written book . The storyline was beautiful, it touched bases on a lot things women or people in general I dealing with everyday. And this book really touched my heart I loved every minute of it.
Loved everything about this story. From the characters and how they interacted with each other. Then it’s also rare that cry while I read but from five minutes in I was balling my eyes out.
This is the 4th book that I’ve read from Rayona now, and it didn’t disappoint at all. We follow Phoenix who is bullied bc they don’t identify as girl or boy. They are befriended by Giovanni, who becomes their bestfriend and sticks up for them when others get their pronouns wrong. He comforts Phoenix, when no one else does, he respects them, and helps them navigate through this tough time in their life. This book is so raw and emotional and beautifully written. Rayona never disappoints. Pick this up for yourself and see ! 5 star read, and DONT FORGET to check your trigger warnings. The subject matter is hefty but powerful.
🌟Check the triggers before reading🌟. This is a beautifully well written story of overcoming obstacles and trauma through connection. The characters are so relatable and endearing. Phoenix and Giovanni healed a piece of my heart. ❤️
