Book one

First off, I did not finish this book. I know that you are supposed to suspend belief when reading a book like this, but I'd like some bit of realism.

For such a short book I found more than a few problems. Granted most of them had to do with the complete lack of realism in the MC's actions.

Also for how short the book is the multi page stat pages just seemed like a way to up the page count since we're treated to it three times in the first twenty-six pages.

Just wasn't for me I guess.

3/10 Just because I liked the idea of this book.

A Hard Nope!

Someone once told me that reviewers should only offer the mildest of criticisms when reviewing an authors work - to which I respond BS! If a book is poorly written I will say so and the same applies to books riddled with misspellings and confusing homophones.
But what really bugs me and detracts from the story line is that far too many authors writing in the LITRPG genre and associated sub-genre insist on listing the complete stats of the primary character every couple of chapters, if not more frequently, and include the same explanations for every skill along with a complete listing of the contents of their inventory. To me this is the sign of a lazy author and is a relatively immediate turnoff.

This is just about the dumbest shit

I think the story may have been written by a child it's absolutely ridiculous nonsensical and silly at best. Protagonist has lost ridiculous inner monologue and not over the top funny kind of way more like dinner monologue of an eighth grader who thinks he's so awesome. Half of what takes place in the story doesn't even make sense giving the information we're provided I had to give up about 15% of the way in cuz it was just so stupid

Fun story with OP MC

Pretty cool story. It is basically one big training montage. Normally I don’t love shorter books, but in this case it seemed to work well to end it as his training ends.

Liked how the author dug into the nitty gritty mechanics of how the system and mana work.

The plot armor was a bit strong but not strong enough to ruin the story.

Great start to the series. Will start book 2 right away.

Leo and the New Earth

Leo decides to go into the woods to think about his girlfriend having sex with his best friend. While there the Earth get intrigued into an RPGMMORG type world and he needs to fight to stay alive.
He happens upon a dungeon and his training begins. He learns how to fight with the help of a Ent.
Finally the system decides that he's learned all he can and ejects him from the dungeon. When he's out he finds and saves a couple from an insane group...

Fun read and I want more!

Dumb and Dumber meets the RPG world

In the beginning, I thought we finally got a main character (MC) who actually knows about RPG games and will make this a fun book to read. I was excited until the author revealed that this MC was a complete idiot with no ability to learn from his previous experiences. I can’t not tell you how many times he almost dies because he continues to the same bull in a china shop like behavior, over and over and over again. The author even added another character to tell the MC how stupid he was repeatedly. I guess this author thinks this is supposed to funny instead of annoying. There is so much potential here but the MC just brings me out of the story constantly with his stupidity.

I liked the premise of the book but the story was vexing. I've read a lot of books in this genre but even though I tried hard to persist, I couldn't go past 61% of the book.

Spoilers ahead:
I just couldn't wrap my head around the choices made by Leo & a few general glaring issues in the story by the author. I couldn't wrap my head around how Leo "almost" always as he likes to point out just dumps all his available stats in constitution even after being counselled by his trainer simply stating something along the lines of "if something helps keep me away from dying then I don't see the problem of adding to it" that's just to put it politely "idiotic". Funny even though the author states through one of his characters that this isn't a game, he seems to write it like one. Min maxing maybe a good strategy in a game but it makes no sense whatsoever in actuality as your body simply won't be able to function with overwhelming stat points in just one stat. To be fair, the author tries to sort of address that using "Plot Armour" by having Leo consume a Legendary fruit that raises all his stats by a single point daily for more than six months. How does it make sense for anybody to get a legendary resource once per day for so long even if they are in a dungeon. This is just the tip of the iceberg, the low damage of his arrows even after months of practicing mana control, illogically low rate of skill leveling, not getting skills even though he is using them since a long time, him being offered bow classes for all three of his choices at level 10 even though he hadn't used one in the story nor having one & glossing over it by saying he knew how to use them in the past are a few of the biggest downsides for me in this story. Maybe the author tries to paper over the cracks later on in the book I don't know but even a loosely fantasy based genre story needs at least a little logic in it.

Areas of improvement

Overall this is a decent story but there are areas that lack common sense not all the eyes are dotted and not all the keys are crossed I am right now on page 41 and I have noticed a couple of areas the author has failed clarify why is he not ambidextrous because it wastes time if he has to toss an ax to his right hand to throw he should be able to throw with both hands easily and how is he recovering his axes there is nothing in the story that would indicate that he is simply calling it back to his inventory or how that might work also why are you putting the MCs points into Constitution only that is stupid so what you're saying is all he has to do is just stand there take a whole bunch of wounds and simply Outlast all the ways of monsters this is stupid you need strength and agility strength to back up the agility for agility to work at its maximum capabilities and strength to fuel it strength is your backbone of all of your abilities I don't understand why all authors think otherwise it is simply dumb Constitution you need to keep going you need to do damage if you're going to outlast all of your opponents this is where Constitution would come in also with a high strength stat this is where you would get your visual awesomeness as experienced by the readers how much more would it visually stimulate your readers by seeing your MC's ax hit the side of one of these spiders and fling it into the wall this is where you're going to get your readers to move to the edge of their seats and be so drawn into the story itself that they don't even realize what they are doing it is what they are experiencing through the story that is pulling them in simply standing there with Constitution is not going to get this done

Despite the book being middling or low tier, I will read the next one.

First point and it's a petty one...WHAT DOES THE COVER HAVE TO DO WITH THE BOOK.
A)...There is no 'dragon'.
B). the MC uses an Axe and Bow? He doesn't even have a sword!
Yes that's a minor complaint but I think of it as false marketing. Don't advertise a book of a sword wielding MC with dragons and then write book that has neither dragons or sword wielding.

As for why I'll read the next one? The only reason is that I'm interested in the world itself and where it's going. However if it doesn't improve, I admit I'll drop the series.

First all the other reviews are right. The MC makes horrible choices like picking an archer class and always using his axe. The plot makes little sense and the whole book is basically just a training arc exposition dump of information about the system.

Now as for the MC? He's horrible. He's basically a Dude Bro. Every other thing he says has 'Dude' in it or he's swearing. He can't mutter one line without swearing, mostly the f-bomb for every situation.

He's this brash overconfident self important sort of not taking anything seriously that is super annoying. He ignores his 'trainer' almost all the time in thinking he's amazing or ready to do anything only to be told time and time again he's not.

He's not even some neckbeard's edgy idea of the ultimate male. No he's more akin to the Frat boy gym rat muscle car bro who thinks he's top dawg and everyone should be impressed by him. THAT is the MC. Basically an 8th grader's ideal awesome dude. That's what this characters attitude and inner thoughts are like. Honestly I thought the writer was a young teen for most the book from how the character acted.

I had hoped that some 'grim reality' would set in and he'd knock off his constant joking and not taking things serious. It wasn't good banter joking either but bad, "But I'm the best so it's what ever' type joking.

That being said, I will give the next book a chance because all this book took place with him alone and the next book will be him interacting with others. I want to see if the character 'grows' as a person or if the author will keep them as mega dude OP best ever gary sue. If that's the case. I'll be dropping the series.

Level up: it's an RPG World is the first book in an excellent series. The main character takes a nontraditional approach (through no fault of his own), and of course, when he gets out of the tutorial, the first thing he runs into is a group of bullies. (was there any doubt?). How he handles them is probably obvious, but that's not the point of the story. His tutorial takes up most of the book, taking care of the world building aspects, so if you don't care for the world building parts of the LitRPG books, then this first one will be a bit of a slog for you, but it's a very well done story, and the skills, spells, stats, and everything else related to the character makeup all makes perfect sense, and adds to something that turns out to be one of the best LitRPG beginning books I've read in a while. Easily recommended for anyone who enjoys LitRpG stories, and especially ones taking place on earth after a system integration.

Solid concept made worse by poor editing and lack of attention to detail. This book is a fairly standard System LitRPG story with what is clearly intended to be an OP MC. It's also fairly crunchy, with lots of stats, leveling and skills. However, the author does an extremely poor job of actually tracking stats progression. So, in one chapter a stat will be 40 and, in the next chapter, the MC will "dump 15 points into it" and the new stat will be 45. For anyone who enjoys tracking the character's leveling progress, this can be incredibly distracting and breaks the immersion something fierce.

Beyond that, there are numerous typos and grammatical errors, even more than is typical for the genre. Again, it breaks immersion.

Lastly, as others have noted, the author makes LIBERAL use of plot armor, which stretches to the extreme how much disbelief has to be suspended by the reader. It's almost cartoonish in how extreme it is.

I'll probably see how the second book goes to see if things improve at all, but this was a poor showing for the first book in the series.

1 1/2 stars. The writing was ok but overall I found the story dull. Yes, almost all LitRPGs have very predictable storylines this just didn't have any originality or spark. Some of that has to do with the fact that through much of it it really is just the one character, and that character was flat. Then there is his mentor/trainer but that interaction was very superficial. Also, there was a lot of time spent in training, where he spent months just learning to control his mana flow. Ok, glad that it wasn't that he mastered it in a few days and the length in the book wasn't too long it just seemed unrealistic in any game mechanics people would be allowed to just sit in a safety zone for months at a time to meditate. All these things just annoyed me.

In the end, I just wasn't invested in the main character and the rest of the story wasn't entertaining enough for me to want to continue.

The protagonist is a rare idiot.

He picks an archer class but ALWAYS ends up fighting melee, almost dies and is saved only due to plot armor. Therefore, he gloriously decides almost always to put all his points into endurance...

Despite getting killed in almost every fight he looks down on the stealth upgrade and never, ever is willing to use the terrain against his enemies. While he ends up on trees several times he never uses the bow from there but instead keeps jumping down to confront his enemies in melee.

Furthermore, he persistently attacks either unsuited enemies or ignores the known weaknesses of his enemies "until later" after he once again almost died when fighting them close range.

Beside the moronic fights the book consists of sheer endless training where the protagonist shows again his vast intellect and constant showings of the preposterous increases of his skills.

Pretty interesting traing montage after a system apocalypse

The MC is camping after a breakup with his girlfriend, who cheated with his buddy. Not cool so he's bummed. Then the system arrives and he soon falls into a time compressed training dungeon. This isn't supposed to happen just after integration, but the fix is in from an unknown benefactor. Of course this means that at some point he will face potent advesaries. Thats for the future. For now he levels up and a treant spirit assists him in learning about weapon sskills, mana and cultivation. Its hands-on training, interspersed with fighting increasingly tough monsters. When his tutorial is up, he pops out into a far more alien landscape, but he is way higher level now.

First three books i would give a good 5 stars. Sure I find the writing a little more like rambling at times, but the story line is good. After book 3 I would start deducting a star. This is mostly my own fault for not reading far enough a head into the series synopsis before buying it. While I am a fan of introducing technologies, I'm less so off the whole tech weapon/alien attack. It just goes in a direction I'm personally not happy with. I'm sure there are lots who will and do love the series. For me personally I'm left with book 5 finished and no interest ATM to finish the rest of the series that I bought. I may come back to this series at a later date.

Ok, but MC is an absolute idiot

The pacing is fairly slow, and the MC is a ridiculously lucky and impatient idiot. Via a convenient bit of plot armor, he is given a head start and training to explore and learn the rules and skills required to navigate his new rules. There are very few other characters, so little to comment upon there.

The story is told in a relatively simplistic style, though fairly little issue with spelling or grammar. For the world building, we learn a bit of the rules, but no solid attempt to explain why the world changes... just it does.

good story, a bit wordy

Good basic RPG apocalypse story. Very crunchy if you like that sort of thing. MC lucks into a position where he can become OP.
My only criticism is that the authors environmental descriptions are a touch flowery and tend to repeat themselves.
That said, I’m still going to get the next one, and if you like crunchy GameLit with full character sheets and skill descriptions every chapter or two, you should read this.

Needs Work

Sooo, basically a System Apocalypse story with a little cultivation thrown in. Not a bad premise but the LITRPG element was horribly implemented. The stat gains and skill gains were random at best. The effects of higher tier stats and levels unexplained, and consistency was missing. Yup, it's only superficially LITRPG. The hallmarks of that genre is consistency and qualification.

Worth the Read!

This is a LitRPG book set in our modern day world just as the System assimilates Earth. The mc has to come to grips with the situation and figure out what is going on.
This is the first book in what appears to be a several book series, and it looks like the mc will end up OP.
I enjoyed the book and recommended it.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Leo the MC is a good guy who accidentally falls into a training dungeon where he gets his bad habits driven out of him and slowly learns about the system and develops his strength and skills , good read that lays a solid foundation for book two.

A fun read

I am actually surprised how fun of a read this one was. It won’t rack your brain with a complex plot, for now, but it will keep you hooked. This whole book is a big exposition, but it’s relatively short for a litrpg story. There’s a semi-hard magic system too. I am however confused at how he became OP.

One of the most unlikeable MCs.

The MC is basically given welfare levels while whining and being ungrateful the entire time. He constantly makes bad, then worse decisions and complains when he gets hurt.

Finally, the author can't be bothered to do basic math or add logical consistency. do not read.

Perhaps I should have been warned off when I noticed that they had spelled the title wrong on the cover. ‘Ascencion’. Anyway, the story was unoriginal and the main character the sort of irritating dudebro who goes camping with two custom throwing axes. While there’s a big pile of stats we ignore these as he beats much tougher foes by being cooler than them. It really wasn’t my type of book.

Quite fun

This book was a lot of fun. It is short, but that just makes it perfect for a cold winter afternoon.

If you are just looking to relax for a few hours, this book is perfect.

Highly recommended.

Not for me. Too many pages full of stats, no real plot advancement. The author's writing style was a nice change from other litrpg books I've read recently, but not enough to make the series worth continuing.

Boring apocalypse litrpg without apocalypse and without struglle.
MC is levelling up with insane speed, getting strong support from the system without explanation. There is nothing interesting in this book.

Good book

The writer needs to stop all the listing he did, I know it's filler material but once or twice a chapter is enough especially since only one thing changed and the rest is the same

Interesting book

I like the generic premise of the book. 90% of it was a training montage in a dungeon that towards the end got a little bit old reading about. But it has enough meat to it to where I think it will get better in the next book with a storyline.

Not bad.

I had to stop reading the last 6 of these type of books because they were so bad. This one was a page turner and enjoyable to read. I liked it and recommend it to all who like LitRPG.
