This is my first mythological fiction for this year. The character explored in this book was the reason I picked up this one. The book is about Garud - popularly known to be the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. This character is seldom talked about in the world of fiction.
Garuda is known to be the supreme bird which was created at the beginning of the new world. He is considered as born from an egg to Vinata - Daughter of King Daksh. Here he is half man and half bird. This book shows the animosity of Garud towards Indra and the way he makes his way to Vaikunth or Lord Vishnu. This book also highlights the family feud between Garud and Nagas (The Nag Community), who are sort of cousins.
I liked the way the book was presented. The writing feels like watching the show. The narration is captive and the character arc of the protagonist is amazing. It is good to see Garud growing from an angry protector to a person who understands the situation first. There are certain errors in the book, but as the story is binding, they can be overlooked. People interested in mythological fiction can definitely pick this one up.

I never liked Indra since childhood, but reading this book was surprisingly fun. The author's portrayal of Garuda's untold stories from Indian mythology is both captivating and thought-provoking.

Book Review: Garuda: The Dark Secrets of Lord Indra

The book is a complete story of Garuda culled out from various epics and the author's connecting all these stories and presenting as a comprehensive book on Garuda is commendable.
Most of the readers are familiar about some information on Garuda like he is the vahana of Vishnu and had been the son of Kashyapa and Vinata, but it is interesting to know what he had done after his birth and till became Lord Vishnu's vahana.
The story starts some thousand years before birth of Garuda ( The egg required that much time to push the bird out) and meanwhile so much story happens. Garuda though was inside the egg was regularly told about the developments by his sister Sunitha. Do you recall who is Sunitha? She is the wife of none other than Sagara chakravarthy of Ikshwaku lineage and the ancestor of SriRama and Bhagiratha.
He develops a life long rivalry with his step mother Kadruva ( who is the antagonist for this book) and her Naga sons.
You may be wondering why title contained about dark secrets of Indra. You have to read the book to learn the role of Indra on some of the events learnt by Garuda and his own experiences. It is a different matter as there were reasons for Indra for what he did. Overall the story has spread over a few Yugas and we get to know a " Bird's eye view" of those events by following " Garuda."
The diagrams are excellent. And the artist deserves a praise.
The ebook has a few errors which can be corrected in next edition and they will not come in the way of enjoying the book. Some of the spellings of known characters are spelt differently . For example Geemudavahana instead of Jeemithavahana and Jarlkaru for Jaratkaru.May these are vernacular spellings. While writting mythologicals it is a good practice to follow Google spellings as they are universal.
The cover page is beautifully drawn by the author's husband, and she acknowledged her son and daughter for their support. Congrats hence due not just to the author but to her whole family.

One of the most intriguing characters in Indian mythology, Garuda, has many unrecorded stories that Lekha Varma skillfully narrates in this book.
Set in the narratives of Puranas and explaining the creation of life on earth, Garuda, a divine bird which is popularly known as Vishnu's Vahana, was born much before the other species of birds were created along with primal Nagas (serpents). He was born with a great purpose and is believed to be born from the essence of Lord Vishnu himself.
From the moment of his birth, Garuda sets out on a valiant quest to rescue his mother from servitude and vanquish his formidable adversaries, the Nagas. However, Garuda's tale is far more intricate. The entire journey he embarks on to free his mother serves a deeper, more spiritual purpose. Inspite of being a celestial entity, Garuda succumbs to conceit and ego and ultimately discovers the hard way what the fact of existence is.
