In his continuing quest to earn college recommendation letters from the gods, Percy has to pet sit the goddess Hecate's polecat and giant mastiff during Halloween week. What could go wrong?

Rick Riordan’s newest Percy Jackson adventure is full of hilarious set pieces, a diverse cast of gods and monsters, and many other delightful tricks and treats.

Percy Jackson, now a high school senior, needs three recommendation letters from the Greek gods in order to get into New Rome University. He earned his first one by retrieving Ganymede’s chalice. Now the goddess Hecate has offered Percy another “opportunity”—all he has to do is pet sit her polecat, Gale, and mastiff, Hecuba, over Halloween week while she is away. Piece of cake, right?

Percy, Annabeth, and Grover settle into Hecate’s seemingly endless mansion and start getting acquainted with the fussy, terrifying animals. The trio has been warned not to touch anything, but while Percy and Annabeth are out at school, Grover can’t resist drinking a strawberry-flavored potion in the laboratory. It turns him into a giant frenzied goat, and after he rampages through the house, damaging everything in sight, and passes out, Gale and Hecuba escape. Now the friends have to find Hecate’s pets and somehow restore the house, all before Hecate gets back on Saturday. It’s going to take luck, demigod wiles, and some old and new friends to hunt down the animals and set things right again.

Rick writing books non-stop so Percy Jackson never ends 🤝🏻 Me avoiding reading the books so I never reach the end of the Riordanverse.

Notes: A ton of heart, great fun in parts, though meager otherwise: a smaller-scale (short story) tale drawn-out to novel-size.

it’s like rick riordan regained sentience in 2021 and has been unstoppable since 😭

reason 193892948923993 why you should NEVER trust an author after they say they’re “done” writing a series…

i wanted to love this. truly, i did. but there is just so much wrong with this book.

the third chapter mentions paul and hana whispering, what happened to dave? why are we suddenly talking about paul? where did paul come from?

percy talks about leo in the present tense, though to everyone’s knowledge, including percy’s, leo is dead.

“the ocean glinted in the moonlight (…) we were in turkey.” turkey does not border any oceans! a simple google search would have shown/said as much.

when did annabeth’s usual shampoo become apple scented? we clearly read “annabeth's hair smelled like lemon soap” in battle of the labyrinth.

did anyone proofread this book? was there an editor?

i felt like the book was trying too hard to be funny. the constant mention of pee? terrible.

i know these books are written for kids, but compared to the first five books it felt even more childish. i enjoyed chalice of the gods, it was a cute book. but i just couldn’t bring myself to like this one.

moving on to the characters, the characterization was terrible. the characters felt like parodies. why was percy written in a way that makes him seem like an incompetent idiot, incapable of doing anything without annabeth’s help? percy is a smart dude and i hated reading his thoughts about himself. feeling self conscious is obviously a very normal thing, but why wasn’t it discussed? why joke about his feelings instead of acknowledging how he’s feeling and having him talk about it to his girlfriend?

back to annabeth’s help. it seemed like annabeth was reduced to the mom friend who knows everything. why? she’s seventeen! let her make mistakes! where percy was made out to be incompetent, annabeth was written to be over-competent.

i have more to say but i’ll leave it at this for now. i might come back to edit this cause i’ve just been rambling here, but i needed to get it out.

we all kind of knew that riordan was only writing this new trilogy as a sort of marketing companion to the release of the disney+ series, and i think i've finally resigned myself to this fact. mostly.

here's the thing- the stakes are pretty low. percy needs godly recommendation letters to get into college, the horrors! it's silly, but it makes for easy one-off quests that don't leave the fate of the world hanging in the balance, which is the only was this series was going to work anyways. for the most part, this is okay! i liked hecate and her weird little pets, i liked the baby hellhound, i liked the introduction of a really cool new grover power. i liked getting glimpses into percy and annabeth's school lives, into their everyday routines. riordan is great at the little details that help to ground a character into the world around them. he's great at combing through lesser known greek myths for inspiration. he's great at writing accessible and entertaining fight sequences. my list mostly stops here.

my real disappointment surrounding this story lies in the way that riordan seems almost unwilling to make more significant use of the all the space that this lack of "world's end drama" frees up. a series like this is the perfect opportunity to really delve into character relationships and perspectives in a way the original installments didn't always have time for. topics that fans have been all but begging for riordan to debrief (percy's anger issues, the entire tartarus fall, frustrations about the lack of options for adult demigods) could so easily take center stage in ways that feel relevant and meaningful to what seems to be this series' overarching themes about growing up, moving on, etc. we get glimpses of this throughout, but it never feels layered and satisfying.

i love these characters a lot. percy's first person narration is always going to be comforting and charming- but i think this series is experiencing some burnout. our main trio feel like cookie cutter versions of themselves, boiled down to the most basic of their character traits instead of presenting them as the nuanced, complicated people they are (seeing the bite taken out of annabeth absolutely kills me). i'll still finish the books out- nostalgia is a drug, etc, etc.- but i think my expectations have evened out about what to expect.

geez, uh, this was not good.

gotta say the “percy is so stupid” schtick is not cute at this point and feels especially gross given that these books started out as empowering stories for kids with learning disabilities who struggle in school like percy. the way annabeth, in contrast, is hyper-competent and percy’s replacement brain is getting cartoonish and verging into straight-out misogynistic stereotypes at this point.

real creepy to focus so much on how maternal the only girl character is, too.

also, i’m never one to dock “points” for a continuity error or two, authors and editors are human. but this one has even more than chalice of the gods, and they’re extremely distracting. has rick or his editor read the original series any time in the last ten years? at this point, the cumulative effect of the errors makes these books feel rushed and unimportant to the people making them, which is just lovely considering how much money they are making off of them.

very funny that the same man who scolded readers for wanting a more satisfying ending for percy and annabeth in blood of olympus, when it wasn’t their “turn”, is now writing about them even when he has nothing to say and has completely lost touch with why they charmed readers in the first place.

i know these books are a cash grab/marketing for the tv show, but he could at least pretend to care about writing a decent story. disappointing

✧₊⁺ Wrath Of The Tripple Goddess by Rick Riordan✧₊⁺

This review is spoiler free!!

Ok, so that was actually way better than I thought it would be 🤭🤭 The riordaverse is such a comfort universe, and being back in it truly felt like a warm hug 🫂🫂 I read Wrath Of The Tripple Goddess (WOTTG) in one sitting on a plane, and it made me totally forget about my fear of flying, and there was never a moment where I wasn't smiling or laughing (yes I was getting a lot of weird stares, but oh well 😂😂)

I still honestly can't believe how much I loved this 🤭🤭 I first started and read all of the pjo books at a very young age, and I was worried that after all of this time, they wouldn't be as special to me, but it's safe to say that I was completely wrong, and had nothing to worry about 🥹🥰 These characters literally feel like home, and something about being able to follow the og trio after all that has happened, and all of the new characters we've been introduced to is so special 🥹🫂 Ngl Percy, Annabeth and Grover were always my favourite characters, and no one could ever compare to them, so the fact that Rick wrote another series just about them makes me so freaking happy 🥳🥳 I no joke felt so giddy the entire time I was reading this 🫠🫠

❥ The Prophecy - Taylor Swift
❥ Can't Catch Me Now - Olivia Rodrigo
❥ Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me - Taylor Swift

⁀➷ 𝓒𝓱𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓢𝓽𝓾𝓭𝔂

❥ Percy: Percy Jackson, you will always be loved by me 🥰🥰 He can literally do no wrong, he's so precious 🥺🥺 I totally forgot how much I loved being in his pov, and how much the chapter titles made me laugh 😂😂 He always knows the exact right thing to lighten the mood and make everybody feel better, even if he doesn't know he's doing it 🤭🤭 His story will always be very close to my heart, and I will always read whatever Rick puts out about him 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

❥ Annabeth: Ahhh I love Annabeth so much, she will always be my favourite 🤭🤭 I love that she still has a witty comeback for everything, yet you can see how much she cares for Percy and Grover, and the family she has found for herself 🥹🥰 I loved seeing her be a teenager for once, as well as seeing her in action fighting, and how she has made a life for herself outside of Camp Half Blood 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ I just love her so much, and I can't wait to see where her and Percy's story takes us next 🫂🫂

❥ Grover: I really liked Grover as always!! He is also such a cinnamon roll 🥹🥰I love how loyal he is to his friends, and that he doesn't act all annoyed that he can sometimes be the third wheel 🫂🫂 (let's be honest tho, everybody's been the third wheel to percabeth at some point). Ngl I wish we got to see a bit more of him with Juniper, bc they are so cute, but I did love the scene we got at the end 🤭🤭

❥ Other Characters: Ngl I always thought as Hecate as the chill magic goddess and to say I was shocked by her character would be an understatement 🫢🫢 I love Gale and Hubica sm 💓💓 I'll have to add getting a polecat to my Christmas wish list 🥰🥰 Also since when was Juniper so wise 😌😌

⁀➷ 𝓡𝓸𝓶𝓪𝓷𝓬𝓮

❥ Annabeth + Percy: They are such a comfort couple 🥹🥰 The fact that we've seen them since they were twelve years old to where they are now is so special, I can't 🤧🤧 The fact that they still call each other 'wise girl' and 'seaweed brain' after all of these years will forever be the most adorable thing ever 🫠🫠

⁀➷ 𝓢𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓠𝓾𝓸𝓽𝓮𝓼!

➸ "Annabeth and I were more than just two people. We were a pair, and when we stood at the crossroads, we did it together."

➸ "Grover and I exchanged a look of relief. Whenever Annabeth joined the chat, the odds of us doing something idiotic went way down. The odds were never zero, mind you, because I was still in the mix."

➸ "Annabeth often told me I would make a great dad, because I already had the right jokes—stupid, corny, and stupid."

➸ “Hey, Wise Girl,” I said, trying to keep the panic out of my voice, “be wise. I don’t know much, but I do know we’re stronger together. Always.”

⁀➷ 𝓘𝓷 𝓒𝓸𝓷𝓬𝓵𝓾𝓼𝓲𝓸𝓷

Overall, this was another cute light-hearted addition to the riodaverse 🥰🥰 I would highly recommend if you are looking for:

✅ Easy to read and bingeable
✅ Adorable romance
✅ Fun plot

Bruh. What is this.
Last year I read and had fun with CotG, despite its very obvious problems. But this book is so uncharming, ironic and dishonest I couldn't make it past page 40. The jokes are bottom of the barrel (why is Grover wearing a shirt that says HUMAN on it, what kind of a pathetic joke is that), the continuity doesn't exist, Percy is presented as dumber than ever and Annabeth as more perfect than ever (at one point the book calls her a natural people person who is always hounded by people who want to be her friends and I just had to stare at a wall for a bit). In all honesty, I don't know if the book is much worse than the first one, or if I'd been less critical a year ago because the show wasn't out yet so I wasn't yet aware just how creatively corrupt and cashgrabby the franchise has gotten. I simply can't read these anymore, even as a cringe read.
All in all, Rick Riordan has completely lost sight of what made PJO good, and he is no longer capable of writing Percy.

I cant believe it took me so long to finish this book, and it wasn’t because I was busy. Is because this book is terrible written.

I want to know how this is the same man who wrote PJO. Like this book is bad, and I am saying this as someone who relatively enjoyed Chalice of the Gods. This is just bad all around. The characters feel like parodies of themselves. Maybe is because I came to read this book after reading the HOH graphic novel which makes an amazing job adapting the story.

He writing this book that is set to happen between two established sagas doesn’t help much, he has less room to wiggle. But even then, the continuity errors are a level high in the worst way possible, like yeah we are uses to some level of mistakes in his book, but in this? This is a whole new level of bad. This is the writing of someone who absolutely has no idea what he has written before. It’s really disheartening how he took something as beloved and beautiful as the original series and is just making this soulless new book. The Percy charm is almost gone.

I known people like to deny this, but there is a clear difference of personalities between the show characters and their book counterpart. I also want to say this is not me blaming the actors, this is me saying the writers and producers of the show don’t get the soul of the characters and they try to put them into certain boxes, when in reality they are so complex. And when one of the show writers is also the author of the books, you get this horrible mixed bad characterization that ends up making whatever this book is and the soul and spark of what made PJO so beloved is just gone. Is the first time in my life that reading a PJO book feels like a drag, and I devoured the horrible written Blood of Olympus.

∘₊✦ The Wrath of the Triple Goddess 🕯️

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

✑ overview (spoiler-free!)

⠀⠀⠀ ↳ To achieve his second out of three recommendation letters from gods to get into New Rome University with Annabeth, Percy has to pet sit for Hecate for the week. Easy, right? Nope. As it turns out, Hecate left tempting items in the house for Grover, Annabeth, and Percy, with instructions not to touch them . . .

◗ plot

✦ The pets having a backstory as humans really added more depth to the story, as well as Sally Jackson having passed by the Gramercy house when she was a kid

❖ characters

‧₊˚ ⚘ “. . . no matter where you go, your roots are where you’re planted.” ~ Juniper

⠀⠀⠀ ➵ Hecuba & Gale ~ I liked their backstories a lot, it, and Hecuba was so sweet with Nope. Gale was another great character, and I liked how she sacrificed the chance to change back into a person to help the trio
⠀⠀⠀ ➵ Grover ~ Loved him! I really hope Percy and Annabeth find a way to connect with him still when they go to university

✦ favorite parts ✦

⊹ Mrs. O’leary finding Nope the hellpuppy
⊹ Percy and the puppy Nope calming down Hecuba near where her family died, and ✨
⊹ Annabeth and Percy passing Hecate’s torches on while they repair Hecate’s house
⊹ Percy having dinner with Annabeth, Grover, and Juniper at the end

‧₊˚ ✶ “Nothing is worth losing you. You are always going to be with us, even if we’re temporarily living on different coasts.” ~ Percy to Grover

⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
➶ my recommendation
⤷ ⟡ age rating: 10+
⤷ ⟡ content warnings:
⠀⠀⠀— language ~ none
⠀⠀⠀— romance ~ 3/10 - kissing
⠀⠀⠀— violence ~ 5/10 -fighting monsters

☾ final verdict

This book was really sweet, I enjoyed it even more than Chalice of the Gods! I loved seeing Percy work so hard with Annabeth and Grover to get the recommendation letter, and being so caring about others.

While I enjoy being in Percy’s head it’s hard to go from the high stakes of Heroes of Olympus to almost more kiddy than the first couple books in the original series. It seems like there isn’t one sentence without a joke, pun, or pop culture reference. I enjoy Rick’s writing but I don’t understand why the series is being written like this. I’ll still read everything he writes but I was hoping for more.

2.5? maybe

if i was twelve, this would’ve slayed. i am not, obviously, so this just didn’t hit like the old pjo books (but also the original 5 still slap at my grown age so?) the whole timeline of the riordanverse is so skewed😭 talking about how its senior year and the events of heroes of olympus were last year, so in theory putting this around 2011-12, yet referencing things that are very obviously from the 2020s. put me back in 2012 i beg. and if the general essence of pjo was timeless, it wouldn’t be a big deal but the original 5 are SO OBVIOUSLY mid-late 2000s and these are so obviously 2020s, it just makes them so disconnected and weird.
also im begging rick to stop a) writing percy as a genuine idiot, b) making annabeth shocked to her core when percy has a good idea, and c) making grover so fucking lame and incompetent. unfortunately it’s giving pjotv (derogatory).
the little percabeth moments (where annabeth wasn’t thinking percy was stupid) were very cute and that’s the only reason this is two stars. rick no more. i beg. NO MORE

I love Uncle Rick's writing style, I love the irony he is able to infuse into any situation, the wit he shows in his dialogues and his deep knowledge of classical antiquity...even though the books that are part of the Percy Jackson saga are now dozens, Riordan doesn't miss a beat.

This is the second entry of a new trilogy in this long running series. It is a stand alone adventure with some connections to previous books. In this one Hecate enlists Percy and the gang to pet sit for her and she will give Percy his second recommendation letter for college. It never goes easy for Percy.

Like the first book this adventure is a small affair compared to the earlier books where the fate of the world was involved. I liked this in the previous book but it somewhat irked me in this book. I believe it was what is at stake. Pet sitting? I did not feel it. I get that the author was using this as a metaphor that a job is a job and to try to your best at it no matter what it is. I also know that these books are meant for younger children. But while reading this I felt like we regressed with the story. The story also missed with me as my Greek mythology knowledge is not extensive and I know nothing about Hecate. The author does a good job explaining about her throughout but what I love about these books is how the author incorporates mythology in contemporary times. He did this here but I really not sure if it is done correctly or just for the sake of the plot. I also felt like the regression went for our heroes. They seemed off. It seemed like their progression from previous books did not stay with them.

I am never not going to like a book from this series. A book has to be totally egregious to the characters or the overall story for that to happen. That being said this is probably my least favorite out of the entire series. From all of the books in this series this one seemed like the characters were not themselves completely. I also thought this one was the least mature out of all of them. Farts? Really? And the insignificance of the adventure did not capture me. A fair comparison would be that this is a filler episode from a television series. You watch it once while it did not really add anything. That is how I feel about this book.
