When Death Is Watching

Rate this book
Aya Halidan has never trusted the death dates.

Most citizens of Cascadia are thankful to have a life of freedom before they receive their death notice. The announcement comes with an invitation to the Vivarium, a luxurious tower where they receive “peace and comfort” for their final two weeks.

Aya, however, has been skeptical since her parents disappeared into a Pillar—the source of the death dates. Her suspicions grow into an obsessive need for the truth when her little brother Ren receives his untimely death notice.

When her search for answers leads to her death, Aya becomes trapped between realms, gifted with visions of the past and future. Yet the more she tries to prevent the dire future she sees, the further she is torn from Ren.

Desperate to stop death from taking her innocent brother so young, Aya dares to play with Fate—a risk that may fracture her reality for good.

Jen Woodrum, author of The Severed Fates, is a mental health therapist who always dreamed of writing books. She loves sci-fi, mind-bendy stories that explore hard questions, don't give easy answers, and demonstrate real struggles of being human.

In addition to being an avid reader, she loves writing music, crochet (and teasing her cat with the yarn), and getting inspired by video games. She lives in the midwest with her husband. Her first book, When Death Is Coming, won a sci-fi realm award, and her second book, When Death Is Watching, is patiently awaiting a pretty sticker of its own someday.

My first book holds such a dear place in my heart. But as I build my writing and storytelling skills, I think this sequel is even better. Thank you for joining me on this journey 💕
Book three should come out in 2025.
Book four (final installment) in 2026.

Woodrum weaves a rich, beautiful tapestry in the world of Cascadia. I loved book one in this series, but book two had me staring at it longingly in the times I couldn’t be reading it. The mystery of the pillars and the depth of the characters are highlights, but what really shines is her ability to write from a place of such empathy and emotion. This series is not just another dystopian YA set, it’s beautifully crafted by a mature writer who knows her audience. I cannot wait for book three!

"I’ve received consistent love throughout my life. Even skewed and imperfect, it was there." It’s official. Jen Woodrum is one of my favorite authors. This series is top tier dystopian, my friends. Truly, I am floored. I thought I knew what was coming. I’d added all the pieces together in my mind… only to realize I was working on the wrong puzzle. Jen is the MASTER of plot twists. And while my one and only prediction did prove correct (I thought I was so smart!), it turns out that it was just the first knot in a string of reveals that were all unraveled at the end. This second installment not only expanded the world, it expanded my mind. There were so many sentiments and insightful questions posed that I found myself lingering on—just sitting in my feels for a hot minute. I am beyond stoked to see what Jen’s imagination has in store for the rest of the series! 💀👀✉️🥼📋🚲🎨🌱🥕🍅🔬🧬🤯

Jen has built an incredible story here! I seriously couldn't put this book down. As the second book in the series, readers gain a lot of knowledge about the dystopian world, and I was a huge fan of the unique and powerful world-building. There's so much at stake throughout the story, and the ending made me really excited for the remaining two books in the series. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes dystopian and fantasy books alike!

I was so excited to receive an ARC for When Death is Watching, the second book in The Severed Fates series!! Thank You to Jen Woodrum for the opportunity and I leave this review honestly.

I've seen this said in other reviews, but it does bear repeating. It isn't often that Book 2 in a series outshines Book 1. This is one of those rare instances!

Book 1-When Death is Coming--was PHENOMENAL. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Book 2. What an absolute treat it was to find an even better story arc that uniquely expanded the world in Book 1 and went even further into the real mystery in the story, the death dates.

The deep dive into how each world handles the death dates is well written and had me in it's grip. Aya's story and where it took her was fraught with living, grief, love, and an overwhelming need to solve the mysteries of the death dates and find out if they are true. She gave up so much......I hope in the next books she finds her peace. Her story, intertwined with Corrie's, gave the entire book over to the "world". I found that fascinating and loved it so much.

The plot twists were *chef's kiss* good and I may have gasped a little bit near the end.

I cannot wait for the next installments! This was a 5 star for me! Love it, Jen!

I powered through 80% of this book in a single sitting; I absolutely could not put this down. This is the 2nd book in Jen Woodrum’s Severed Fates series and I really learned the meaning of the name Severed Fates in this story. It’s so rare that I like a book 2 more than a book 1 when I find a new series I love but while book 1 was great on its own and needed for the full storyline, this follow up story absolutely blew the first book out of the water!! Where Book 1 gave dystopian vibes like those in the Divergent series, book 2 gave strong similarities to The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera, but with an otherworldly scifantasy feeling. The story was a perfect length, and the author gave SO much interesting plot and I was genuinely blown away at some of the plot twists that I didn’t see coming or even suspect. I also loved the couple of chapters with the characters from book 1 and loved seeing how they connected to this story by the end.

I cannot say enough good things about this universe Jen Woodrum has created. I’m so grateful there are more books to come in the Severed Fates series!!

Thank you to Jen and her team for the free eARC of this book. I have already placed my preorder for multiple paperback copies once released in early April! You’re going to want to do the same (trust me, even if you can’t trust the Vivarium, the PARC, or the death dates!)

When Death Is Watching is a thrilling sequel to book one! Aya is a headstrong girl who keeps making decisions for the greater good, even if they hurt the people around her. But what is she willing to give to achieve her goals? What will it cost her to change?

And what if fate has a different plan?

I enjoyed all the twists and turns in the book, I couldn't stop reading it! I really appreciate that Jen isn't afraid to shy away from themes of grief and digs into the up and down, deeply emotional process of loss. I also loved Aya's journey, and how she tied in book one throughout the sequel, and I'm excited to see how it all pulls together!

Looking forward to digging into the next book!

I absolutely loved the first book in the severed fates series and was SO excited to have received an ARC of when death is watching!

I love the world that Jen is building in these stories. This dystopian world where death dates are known and can be used as the people in power wish. Not every country is doing things the same way, which I found very interesting as well. Death is such a difficult situation for everyone involved to begin with, and this book really makes you question what you would do to save your loved ones.

Overall such a great YA novel and I can’t wait for the next one!

If you haven’t read the first book, When Death is Coming, go pick that up now!
This book is the second in the series and follows new characters while giving us a glimpse of the old. It explores interesting concepts like if you could actually change the future, what would you sacrifice to save the ones you love, and what kind of person your choices turn you into. Can’t wait for book 3 to come out!

When Death Is Watching is the second book in the Severed Fates series by Jen Woodrum. I loved book 1, so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of book 2.

Like the first book, Woodrum does an excellent job telling the story. You can feel Aya’s dilemma as she contemplates her decisions as she tries to protect those around her.

If you love YA Dystopian novels, I highly recommend When Death Is Watching. You won’t be disappointed!

This is the second book in the Severed Fates series. I loved book 1, and was thrilled to be sent an ARC of book 2.

Ava’s life is shattered when her beloved brother Ren receives a death notice. In Cascadia, death dates are known, and you have two weeks at the Vivarium with your family to prepare for your death. But Ava can't believe that the Fates would take someone so young, so good. She thinks the death notices are part of a larger conspiracy. She becomes obsessed with trying to save Ren, no matter the consequences.

This book was a breathtaking exploration of deep questions like “How far will you go for someone you love?” and “ Do the ends justify the means?” Ava wrestles with these questions as she races against the clock to save Ren. I cannot recommend this book and this series highly enough!

After enjoying the first book in The Severed Fates series (When Death is Coming), I was so excited to receive an ARC of When Death is Watching!

There are few series on my "Read" shelf where the second book of the series outshines the first, but add this one to that list. While the first book of the series set the stage and began to create a world, this book really upped the stakes and took a more extensive dive into the world itself. I loved seeing how a new section of the world was handling the death dates. Even with themes similar to book 1 of the series, When Death is Watching told a totally new story with a completely new voice. Book 2 made me feel not just invested in the main character, but in the "world" as a whole. At first I was kind of "meh" about the viewpoint shifts sprinkled throughout (I was enjoying Aya's storyline too much and couldn't wait to see what would happen next for her), but those sections did weave together some intriguing elements and necessary perspective, especially by the end.

I was hooked from the start and really enjoyed the characters. I will be so excited to read the next installment!

“When Death Is WATCHING,” By Jen Woodrum.

What a sequel! Jen you’ve done it again. Another sci-fi hit that has everything: Drama, suspense, longing, action and characters that have such camaraderie and likeable traits and personalities. Sci-fi usually isn’t a big genre for me but it makes me want to definitely read more. Aya and Rens sibling bond was so sweet to read and the world building was so immersive and beautiful to imagine. Another 5 star read for me!

Ahhh!! I just finished reading this book and my mind is a bit scrambled. Jen Woodrum has created such a vast and engaging world. Although this book focuses on telling a different character’s story than the first one, I LOVED getting to know Aya and her world. And Corrie still makes an appearance.

Grief (and hope) was written so beautifully in this book. Seeing how a different place processes death dates brought an interesting twist to this series. Something big is being built and I’m excited to see where this goes!! If you haven’t started this series yet - go!!

What a stellar follow-up to Woodrum's debut, When Death is Coming! In When Death is Watching, we get more of what was hinted in its predecessor with Darian. Aya Halidan is across the continent from Veil, in Cascadia, which handles the death dates a little differently than we saw in book one. In Cascadia, citizens learn of their death dates two weeks before the day, and are then welcomed into the Vivarium, a building designated solely to helping citizens find peace and comfort before they die. But Aya is suspicious of why the death dates are kept secret until the end and how the Vivarium operates. When her brother, Ren, receives his notice and he, Aya, and their sister Naomi are invited to the Vivarium, Aya decides to investigate.

Unfortunately, Aya's investigation raises more questions than it answers and she finds herself mortally wounded before her actual death date. The next thing Aya knows, she is alive but seeing "wisps" of the past and future, pulled into a secret society of others with this strange ability, and saddled with the great expectations the group's leader, Foster, claims he has seen her achieve in the future. As time ticks on toward her brother's death date and secrets are unveiled, Aya finds herself caught in a struggle of destiny versus free will, with her relationships with her siblings and friends, and her fate itself, all hanging in the balance.

I LOVED the tension Aya faces throughout the novel once she starts seeing her wisps. Here, Woodrum raises excellent point for discussion about free will and I do love that we get to see Aya reflect upon herself and her actions and motivations as she watches the wisps. I also felt myself more stressed out for her as Fate kept intervening so Aya couldn't alter her course. It serves as an excellent reminder of how important free will and self-determination are! I also loved Aya's activism and how she cared for her people, as well as her determination to seek out the truth.

When Death is Watching also does an excellent job of building off the foundation set by When Death is Coming (plus, loved seeing Corrie and her gang's cameos!). As we see more of this dystopian future, as the world-building expands, the complexities of the world and the stories are tightly woven and leave me intrigued and anxious for the next installment. I love how Cascadia, though very different from Veil, is also very suspect and complicates the hurdles our heroes will have to overcome as we continue in the series. The plot twists at the end of When Death is Watching left me impatient for the next installment, and to see how things would all turn out. It was so good and unexpected I wanted to scream (but I controlled myself for the sake of my neighbors).

My head is still spinning! I thought I had this book all figured out, but it took me places I wasn't anticipating.

The story is set in the same world as When Death is Coming (book 1), but in a different region where the knowledge of death dates is handled differently. The author does a great job creating a totally new story, while staying within the bounds of the existing world. Two weeks prior to their death dates, the residents receive notices inviting them to the luxurious Vivarium, where they can spend their final days in peace and comfort.

When Aya's young brother receives a notice that seems way too early, Aya's skepticism becomes an obsession. Aya has never really fit into a mold - not naturally gifted to follow the set paths those around her seem to follow so easily. She is occasionally a difficult character to like, but at the same time, I understand the reasons behind her decisions. There is lots of uncertainty and plenty of big emotions at play.

I don't want to say too much more for the sake of spoilers, but I was really thrown for a loop by the end of the book! Pieces of answers from book 1 have started to fall into place, but now I have even more questions and can't wait to get my hands on book 3!

💕: mention of kissing (romance not a main plot point)
⚠️: death

4.5/5 ❤️

I was given an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) by Jen Woodrum of When Death is Watching (The Severed Fates Book 2). I read her first book, When Death is Coming, last year and gave it 5 stars. I love Jen's writing, her world, and her characters, and want to apologize for my review of her 2nd book being late.

Pain meds (knee injury) made it hard for me to focus when I started this book. So I put it away to come back to later. Then I went from struggling to relate to the characters, to relating so much it was like a punch to my gut and heart. I had to put it down again so I could deal with the hard truths it had reared in me. After coming face-to-face with my own grief and control issues under the name of "protection," I realized this book was changing me for the better. I learned so much from Aya Halidan. The characters, though in a dystopian sci-fi/fantasy setting, were so relatable they mirrored real life. Parts of this book were funny, parts were frustrating, parts were eloquent, and parts were devastating. Because Jen Woodrum wrote a beautiful book with REAL characters.

The dichotomy of self is outstanding.

And with all the heaviness, it's still an exciting read. It's puzzling. You're learning about death dates and why they exist right along with the characters. You're suspecting people, you're challenging ideas, and you're wishing to overthrow corrupt systems. I never see the twists and turns in Jen Woodrum's stories coming, but they're waiting, watching, and are amazing every time.

This series is so good. I highly recommend diving into it if you haven't already. Jen Woodrum's background in mental health and counseling deepens and elevates her stories so much.

When Death is Watching

Holy wow! I thought this about the first book, but you'll need a seat belt tightly fastened for this ride, too. Twists, turns, surprises, and so much more; wrapped up with all the feelings.

Jen's writing is imaginative, highly descriptive, and truly captivating. From the first chapter of the first book, I needed to know how this story played out. I flew through these books at record pace (for me) and found myself happily ‘stuck’ in them days and weeks after finishing.

There are so many hidden gems of relation to our own reality, and I love Jen's take on life. Both books 1 & 2 take a deep look into common emotions and dilemmas through a whole new world, giving the reader a feeling of connection and understanding. Even as the author is breaking your heart, she sows seeds of hope.

I am in awe of how professionally executed this series is, from the writing to the publishing. I'm hooked and here for the rest of the series! Very well done, Jen. Thank you!

Have I mentioned that I love dystopian fiction? Jen Woodrum blew this story out of the water! This book was way more emotional than I had expected but so worth it!

Aya just wants the truth. To know what’s in the Pillars and if the death dates are true. She wants her parents back that seemingly vanished into a Pillar and now she wants her brother Ren back who’s been given his two weeks notice of his impending death date. They are sent to the Vivarium so that he can die in peace and comfort surrounded by his loved ones. Only Aya can’t stand it. Determined to stop Ren from dying, Aya toys with Fate.

Again I will say I did not expect to be emotionally distraught 3 chapters in but I most definitely was. This was a heartbreaking adventure with some twists that completely caught me off guard! I love this world Jen has created. It’s intricate and complex and yet I can picture it so easily. We get a lot more information about this world including more about the Pillars and the Fates. The differences between the way they live in the Veil vs. Cascadia was so interesting!

Aya is a resilient character and full of determination. The struggle she goes through knowing Ren will die was gut wrenching at times. It was also nice to get a glimpse into the perspective of Corrie’s life now too. Foster’s use of gardening and painting for therapy is completely relatable! 🙌🏻 I was shocked with the turn of events at the end! I’m super excited to see what’s in store for book 3!

The book is thought provoking and the world building is powerful and engrossing. The world is perilous and it is filled with a strange mystery. Love the dystopian setting. The characters are likeable. I loved the first book When Death is coming.

Would you enter in a world where your death date is known? Once again the author has taken the readers on a hell of a ride. But this book gives answers of the unanswered questions. Aya Halidan receives the death notice of her brother. She never believed in death dates until now so she ventures on a quest to find the answers, unveil the mystery behind severed fates and to find a cure to prevent deaths. She challenges the fate and gets trapped in realms. Resentment and grief consumes her. All her fears are coming true. Will her vision guide her? Will she be able to find the cure to prevent death dates?

Many Thanks to the Author.

Jen is such an incredible writer. The way she deals with death, grief and loss is absolutely incredible. She has such a gentle way of showing us the raw parts of her characters, yet handling their emotions with such grace that makes you feel apart of their story rather than a voyeur of their pain.

I love YA Sci-fi stories & book 1 told a story that really hooked me from the beginning & held me throughout. I was super excited for book 2. It was somewhat disappointing because I knew the cast was different than book 1, but book 2 does a great job pulling you into the story immediately. We follow Aya, who has 2 weeks to try to save her younger brother from dying. She's convinced she can figure out a way to prevent his death to save him. She's largely convinced the death dates are a lie made up entirely.

I enjoyed the cast & the story of this book. It did feel like it tried to explore some details we never understood in book 1. In many ways I feel this book would've made more sense as the first story. I don't want to give away anything, but I felt much of the suspense & weight of character choices was largely removed from knowledge of events in book 1. I liked the characters, but I never felt the same emotional attachment to them as the cast of the original book. I was happy because we revisited some of the original casts during this story & they're implied to play big roles in the future story.

I love the sci-fi vibes of this world & the intriguing mystery of trying to understand the fates. This story largely works very well, but it felt a little out of order. The ending takes a dramatic leap for what it sets up in future books. I'm not sure how I feel about that giant leap. I likely won't know until I finish the series. In many ways, as of now, I feel it might be a bridge too far, but I can't wait for book 3 to see if I'm shown why & how it's a perfect steppingstone. I mostly love this world being shown to us & can't wait to visit it again. Some of the choices I question, but I'll assume Jen will show me her method to close this storyline beautifully. I'd give this 4.5 stars based on everything I know as of now. I look forward to the next book to see how it continues to build.

I’m not great at reviewing but I can say without a doubt that this series has me hooked now.

With the amount of world building and descriptions it wasn’t hard to imagine something like this being in our future. I really enjoyed the storyline with all the twists and turns it kept me guessing and when I thought I had it figured out I realized I was wrong lol

When Death is Watching is book 2 in the Severed Fated series. This series is set in a dystopian world where the US does not look like it does today. Instead, it is broken up into different countries. In this dystopian world, people's death dates are now known. But, not by the citizens themselves, by the leaders of countries. The leaders in some countries use this knowledge to create a class system, where those with early death dates become seen as lower class and are essentially imprisoned and forced to work out their lives in terrible conditions for the benefit of those deemed more worthy.

While in our main characters' country, citizens live freely. They are notified of their death date two weeks before. They and their families then spend the next two weeks in a place designed to provide "peace and comfort" in those final days. Aya, our main character, is there now with her 14 year old brother who has received his death notice. Aya is not ready to let go, and she doesn't trust these death dates.

This book takes place over the two weeks since Aya's brother Ren receives his death notice to his death. It takes us on Aya's quest to discover what happens in the Pillars and whether the death dates are real. But, what Aya discovers ends up leaving her fractured, in this space in between, and somehow she must find her way back.

This story is so well written. The world building is amazing. The descriptions of the world in which our characters live are incredibly vivid. You can easily imagine the world, and you can feel the emotions our main character is feeling right along with her. The first few chapters are absolutely gut-wrenching.

When Death is Watching is fast-paced and utterly engrossing, there were quite a few unexpected twists in the story. I needed to keep reading to find out what happened in the end. Alas, there is a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'll have to wait until the next in the series.

I'd say you don't have to read book 1 to be able to follow this book. However, I'd highly recommend book 1 because it was really good too. Book 1 gives you a look into a world where the leaders use the death dates to oppress its people. Book 1 is brought into book 2 throughout. Towards the end, the two books connect, and I just loved how they came together.

I definitely recommend this one for those who love Dystopian novels. Or if you are looking to try one out, this would be a great one to start with.

Thanks to the author for having me on their ARC team and for the advanced digital copy of this book.

When Death is Watching is the second book in the severed fates series by Jen Woodrum and honestly after reading it I think she owes me therapy.

You’ll love this series if you love:
- concepts of fate vs free will
- Dystopian/sci-fi YA
- Real, flawed characters
- Greek myths
- Emotional damage
- Incredible writing that pulls you in from page one

Let me break it down for you from the beginning (spoiler free)
In the first book, When Death is Coming we are introduced to Jen’s stunning sci-fi dystopian America. Which means yes, it’s giving Hunger Games and Divergent but better. Trust me. I know Jen also draws a lot of inspiration from video games which I think is genius and it all blends together to make this really unique, really chilling world where people can learn the exact date they will die.
Only, just like typical America, everyone thinks they know the best way to deal with this revelation so the country is split. In Corrie’s world of the Prime, death dates are known from birth and people are valued based on how long they have to contribute to society. As a four, Corrie knows she doesn’t have long to live but a series of accidental discoveries about who she is and where she came from lead her to break free from the labor camp and make some shocking revelations about the world. And of course Jen made me cry in the end with her stunning plot twist.
In book 2, Jen made me cry right out the gate. In this part of America, sitting on present day Portland we meet Aya who lives in Cascadia, a society that encourages everyone to pursue their dreams and announces their death two weeks before it’s date. They are then invited into an ivory tower where they can live luxuriously and process their death appropriately before it comes. Sounds great until Aya’s little brother’s death is announces and then she starts to doubt the whole thing. By the end of this book you will think you know what’s coming and YOU ARE WRONG (thanks Jen, I’m an emotional wreck)
There is a lot more coming from this series including plenty of foreshadowing to the ominous Vegas Valley which I hope we see in the next book. It will be well worth the ride.

Everything you love about YA dystopia, executed perfectly.

I have so many good things to say about When Death is Watching. Indie author @jenwoodrumauthor has done it again with this stunning sequel in her Severed Fates series.

In a world where death dates are known. In Cascadia, individuals are told two weeks prior so that they and their family can spend two weeks together in "peace and comfort" before they pass. But Aya is skeptical of this system and, when her brother receives his invitation to the Vivarium, she will not stop until she finds out the truth.

This thrilling dystopian story tackles difficult topics like grief, loss, and family trauma, Jen does a phenomenal job of navigating the emotions and vulnerability of death. There are also some major Giver vibes that had me turning the pages like a maniac trying to determine what the heck the government was up to!

The main character, Aya, is a perfect foil for the protagonist of book 1. She's bold, impulsive, and skeptical. Her brother Ren, her sister Naomi, and the other new characters were rich and complex and so wonderfully nuanced. Plus, I loved the crossover characters from Veil making some brief appearances.

And that ending!?

This book CAN be read as a standalone book but I highly suggest reading book 1 first: When Death is Coming.

After watching the many creative ways that this author has enticed me to read her books - including beautiful songs too - I couldn’t wait to get this sequel- and I wasn’t disappointed. She’s done it again! What a fantastic and gripping sequel this was! I am officially a huge fan and cannot wait for the next one!
Jen’s writing is just so captivating and unique. I was invested in the main characters - Aya and Corrie from the beginning. What an emotional rollercoaster Aya takes us on too!
She’s real, relatable and wears her heart in her sleeve as she deals with the trauma of her brother’s death notice and desperately starts seeking some truth - uncovering government conspiracies to prevent her brother from being taken so young. I was rooting for her and wanting to find out more too with every page turn .
The twists and turns in this story too! Just wow - and I’m still blown away by the ending !
Will Aya get answers? Will she top death from taking her brother?
I’m not telling you that! What do you take me for - you’ve just got to read this amazing book and you can thank me for telling you about it after! But - the first is also brilliant too - so start with ‘When Death is Coming’ .
if you enjoy exciting YA Dystopian reads, this is amazing!
