WOW! Just WOW! What a book.

Action-packed, fast-paced, and unbelievable gripping page-turner.

This is the 5th book in an incredibly exciting and suspense-packed sci-fi series.
The 5th and possibly the best book in the series so far.
Yes, I know I wrote it about book #4, too, but damn the author writes her book with every book better than the book before.

This series is a sci-fi-post-apocalyptic story, but the thrilling atmosphere and the suspense-packed, scary-gripping way it's written, make it to an unbelievable gripping sci-fi thriller.

I'm still sick, but I wasn't sweating because I have a fever, but because the book is so exciting and thrilling.

This book is not only a sci-fi story.
It's also a very exciting love story and a very fascinating international spy competition between different nationalities.

Yes, there are only three "nations" or
mega-corporations left.
The power fights and games between the mega-corporations remind a lot the Cold War era with the endless spy actions and intrigues.

Only now are the cyborgs, the half machines that want the ultimate power, they're tired of being exploited and having no say and being treated like slaves.

Have I already told you how much I love this series?
No? I loved every page of this book 💙

THE TIGRESS by Anna Mocikat is the fifth book of the Behind Blue Eyes series. The series is a successful indie cyberpunk drama that follows the tales of a murderous group of sexy antiheroes, specifically the morally conflicted Nephilim. She is a cyborg assassin working for the Olympias Corporation and presently in a relationship with the leader of the Guardian Angels, a death squad that secures the power of the Olympias Corporation over North and South America.

The previous books established that Metatron, simultaneously villain and love interest of Nephilim, has been plotting to overthrow the Olympias Board of Directors for some time. Having successfully defeated the invasion of Europe's Rosprom corporation, Olympias has never been more vulnerable while Metatron has never been more powerful. However, to successfully pull off his coup, he needs the other corporation to stand down. The leader of TogbuaXiang, the so-called Tigress, wants to meet with Nephilim and Metatron suspects treachery but it is the only way he can pull off his coup.

As always, I appreciate any cyberpunk that embraces the dark and sexually charged atmosphere of the genre. Also, the moral ambiguity that defines the peculiar of noir and science fiction at its heart. Characters who were heroes in previous books have fallen to absolute vile levels while villains have started to show their more human qualities. This is particularly notable with former "good guy" Jake, who is completely blind to his own cuplability in horrific crimes, while Metatron is starting to see past his previous obsessions.

This book deals with the fallout from the previous ones and manages to develop not just Nephilim but other supporting characters like Jake, Siro, Finwick, and Metatron himself. There's a lot of humanizing moments and character development that replaces action this time around and I think this is a good decision from the author. In an ongoing series like this, it's good to follow up big action works like The Last Stand with giving the storyline time to breathe.

I'm not a big fan of the Metatron relationship with Nephilim and still consider it to have been done almost entirely under coercion because he wiped her memory of his actions in the first book. However, it's interesting to see him finally show some moral revulsion to the behavior of the Board and their own dirty little secrets. While I doubt Behind Blue Eyes will introduce the supernatural at this point in the story, the hints at darker occult undertones aren't entirely out of place in cyberpunk stories. Mike Pondsmith has done plenty of awesome things with the supernatural and AI after all.

I am also really fond of the way that Jake was treated in the book and his almost serial killer like degeneration to misogyny and violence due to the fact he betrayed everything he believed for Nephilim but had already done unforgivable things to her friends. He's a wild card now and his toxic relationship with the woman sent to spy on him is fascinating to read about. He may just be projecting a lot of his own self-loathing on her as well. I'm eager to see how that works out as the reversal from hero to villain is now complete.

This book also expands on the portrayal of Asia in the Behind Blue Eyes world. Previous books had given us a look as to how Europe and South America were functioning in the setting but now we know how China and Australia have been changed. While Olympias is shown to be a totalitarian Brave New World-esque hellhole of excess and moral bankruptcy, TogbuaXiang is more, "Like today only worse." I also like the introduction of the Wasps and their contrast to the Guardian Angels.

In conclusion, The Tigress is another great installment of the Behind Blue Eyes franchise. We've got a lot of new developments to the characters and the politics is extremely well handled. While I'd still love for Nephilim to break free from Metatron's control and go rogue, the story remains consistently interesting and well-written. I've yet to read a bad book by Anna Mocikat yet, though.

Metatron was given an impossible choice. Send Nephilim into an enemy country with the leader of the wasps on her own or lose all the plans they have built over the years. Making the choice for him Nephilim travels to Asia and meets with The Tigress. She must prove her abilities and learn about herself along the way.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Before you read any further in this review please note. This is book 5 in a series that is in no way stand-alone. If you have not read books 1-4 please skip down to the links at the bottom of this page and start with book 1 in BBE. There will be spoilers in this review if you haven't read anything in this series.

As with every one of the other Anna Mocikat books I have read, which have been all of them, I loved this book. There is action and adventure. We still get to jump perspectives from all of our favorite characters from the other books, but the primary focus is on Nephilim and The Tigress. We get to learn more about Nephilim's mother in this book as well as how Jake is doing. Jake is still my favorite and I am forever hoping for good things for the man.

I love the trust and plan that is being set into motion between the wasps and angels. For the entire series they have been the enemy and now we get more of an idea into what is going on beyond the corporation's politics. Then there is The Tigress. She is amazing and surprising. I don't want to give too much away, but she was a worthy opponent and I look forward to how Nephilim handles the task she has been given by her.

Power Play and Moral Decay—A Review of “The Tigress”
It’s been a while since I’ve read the books from Behind Blue Eyes series by Anna Mocikat, so I wanted to refresh my memory before I started “The Tigress”. If you’ve read any of her books, you know they’re fast-paces and filled with action and there are a lot of things you need to keep track of. Perusing the first four books in the series reminded me how much I love Anna Mocikat’s storytelling. It’s vivid and immersive in a way I haven’t experienced in other authors. “The Tigress picks up where “The Last Stand” ended and keeps you engaged from the first page. Needless to say, I loved it and I’ll explain why without spoiling the action.

What I Loved
The world-building is amazing. Her depiction of the cyberpunk universe is rich, detailed, and brimming with suspense.

What truly gripped me was the unexpected evolution of certain characters throughout the series. It’s fascinating to see how the author plays with the moral compass of her characters, turning previous heroes into figures of utter vileness while giving villains a chance to reveal their more human side.

Jake, for instance, started the series as the good guy, but in “The Tigress”, he’s shockingly blind to his own culpability in some truly horrific crimes. On the flip side, Metatron, a character who was once obsessed with his goals, begins to question his actions and the ethics of the Board.

The level of character development in this part is superb. Mocikat shifts the focus from high-octane action to a more introspective exploration of her characters’ humanity, which I found to be a refreshing and much-needed change of pace. This shift allows the story to breathe, giving the characters—particularly Nephilim, Jake, Siro, Finwick, and Metatron—space to grow and develop in complex, unexpected ways.

The way the political intrigue is handled is another standout aspect. The machinations of the Board and the dark secrets that underpin this world make the story more intense.

A lot happens in this book. We see new directions for Jake and Zephaniel, tormented by their crumbling dreams. We see Fenwick trying to navigate his indentured service in the Underworld while still protecting himself, his daughter, and his secret knowledge of the Angels. We get a glimpse of the Inner Circle through the eyes of Metatron, now experiencing things he thought impossible: love, monogamy, and dreams. On top of all of that, Mocikat introduces us to the sacred capital of Togbuaxiang, its customs, its politics, and its killer cyborgs. What once was one saga is now two, if not more. This cliffhanger answers a lot of questions but leaves us asking more, the most urgent of which is: When can I get my hands on book 6?

The Behind Blue Eyes series continues to ramp up the excitement and stakes in The Tigress.

Metatron has been planning something big behind the scenes for a long time and he’s finally ready to bring Nephilim in on it. I have loved watching their relationship grow and change over the course of the previous books and now they are so in sync and in love they seem like an unstoppable power couple.

Building up to a possible cyborg revolution, we get to see behind the curtain of the Wasps and are shown more of their culture and lifestyle. This was a great read (we’ll listen in my case since I have the audiobook) and it left me ready to dive into the next book to see what will happen.

An Excellent Continuation

The intrigue in these books is amazing, and of course, the world building just gets better as we learn more about this world. With a great interaction between Megatron and Nephilim, creating this intriguing relationship across the books it makes for a great read.

Another worthy installment

The tigress continues the story where last stand left off, and it doesn't slacken the pace.
More of everything, intrigue, action, and most of all, more cyborgs.
100% worth the read.

This series has been one of the most enjoyable I've read in years.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next book already!

Quite a ride

Another absolutely amazing story with my favorite cyborg 😉 And a lot more in-depth back story which is helping fill in the blanks. Intrigue, action and a little spice all rolled into one. I can't wait to see what happens next!

ended too soon

I felt like this book had lots of pieces that work toward what will happen next but each one left me wanting much more. I hope Book 6 is almost ready because more development of the pieces in The Tigress will make me excited to read it.
