Artificial Intelligence will create gigantic benefits for humankind but will become more powerful than many governments, with purposes and plans of its own, and the ability to alter the very basis of life on earth. Many believe that AI poses a threat to human dominance. In this punchy, follow-up to his bestselling The Future of (Almost) Everything, leading futurist Patrick Dixon has written an in-depth but accessible exploration of AI, looking at the future of the subject and assessing both threats and benefits - from health and education to cybersecurity, business and the world of work. How AI Will Change Your Life looks at likely outcomes for both individuals and businesses in all areas of life and provides advice for the reader and a charter for governments to exploit the benefits and avoid the risks.
There are some very important topics touched on in this book but the huge range of topics covered from personal cyber security to future wars and the defence industry, the result is a shallow and somewhat breathless analysis of each topic. Personal opinions are important and initially I gave Patrick the benefit of the doubt given he has published a lot before and is acknowledged as an expert in AI but the more I read the less convinced I was with his (sometimes rather wild) claims. There are no links to other research to support claims. There is no attempt to moderate claims, indeed the reader is left thinking these are definite events in the future we must all plan for immediately! This is the case even when the things predicted are 45 years into the future! Initially reassuring references to "reality check"s give way to more wild predictions as the checks seem to disappear. The speculation is somewhat over-indulgent often, harming credibility.
Analysis of the impact of AI on industry, IT, personal lives etc. Presented in a series of chapters which summarise the major implications of increased adoption of artificial intelligence by individuals, businesses, corporations and government.
