What Happens in Summer by Caridad Pineiro At the Shore series book #2. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone bit directly correlates events with the first so this would contain spoilers if that matters to the reader. Connie Reyes spent at lot of summers with her friends Maggie and Ellen at the Jersey shores. They were and still are supportive friends. Back in their teens, when Maggie spent time with Owen, Connie naturally spent time with his brother Jonathan. They even had a teenaged fling but went their separate ways when she went to college. Connie is dedicated to be a good lawyer and is determined to make partner. Going back to the shore with Maggie and seeing Jonathan again won’t disrupt her life goals. At least it shouldn’t. But Jonathan wants to show Connie he’s been successful himself and maybe they can take up where they left off.
The timeline of this book is the same as the first book but from the perspective of this second couple. This was a bit disconcerting to me as I knew certain facts along the way. I felt almost disassociated from this couple as I perceived where we were along the storyline. Connie and Jonathan both grew up with single parents but under much different circumstances. Their ideals are quite different but as teens, didn’t talk about reasons with any depth. Now that they are back together in a relationship their goals are different. He’s in it for love and a future. She is still focused on her career and not her actual life. They need to really talk and make some self assessments before they can do anything.
As with the first book, I fell for the hero in love and wanting his desire to give her everything. 3.5
4.5 stars I really enjoyed What Happens in Summer. It was a fun, sexy read written by an author who knows how to draw her readers in, give them a good time and bring them to a sweet, romantic happily-ever-after.
Jonathan Pierce was a fun guy. He knew how he wanted to live his life and it wasn't by his father's rules. He also didn't fit into the mold that Connie is looking for. He's spontaneous. He's free-spirited. He's loyal. He's made millions by his tinkering and wanderlust. But, Connie or his father doesn't see what he made himself into … a self-sufficient, responsible man. He has Dudley to keep him company and kept trying to get Connie to see the man that he's turned into. No matter what he did or said, she always had an apprehensive look in her eyes, a look like she was just waiting for him to leave and never return. But, he's a patient man. He love's Connie and will wait her out.
Connie honestly annoyed me throughout the story. I kept reading, not only because I was enjoying the story line but to see if she ever lightened up. Granted, she had a rough upbringing but she couldn't see outside of the box that she built around herself or give Jonathan just a little bit of a break. Until her life started falling around her. Yes, fate had a way of teaching her a lesson. She loved Jonathan, but didn't trust him to stick around. She kept waiting for him to walk-away and chase another dream. She had to admit that his dreams and success did change him but, not enough for her to trust him.
Even though Connie got under my skin, she did make the story interesting. Once all the secrets were out and each of them understood what happened in their past … once Connie faced that Jon was the man that she could trust and make a life with … once Jon made peace with his father … it was time and Caridad Pineiro did a beautiful job of bringing them together at long last.
What Happens In Summer was a nice, sit-by-the-pool and relax read. Even though there were a few twists and turns, some surprises, it was, in it's own way, really romantic.
Jonathan “Jon” Pierce is the black sheep second son of a wealthy family. He is a self-educated inventor, whose invention has made him a multimillionaire. Jonathan decides to put down roots in Sea Kiss, a town along the Jersey Shore, to be near his older brother. Fate throws Connie back into his life, and things escalate fast between them. To pave a future with Connie, he must resolve his issues with both of his parents. Can Jonathan prove to Connie that he is a changed man?
Consuelo “Connie” Reyes is a lawyer at a New York City firm. She behaves amicably around Jonathan for her friend’s happiness before her nuptials to his brother. Connie fears he is not the responsible type; however, she notices the subtle changes in him. Despite her reservations, she decides to give in to their smoldering attraction. When her life plans go awry, another opportunity presents itself. Will Connie change her plans to include Jonathan? Or will their trust issues stand in the way?
Jonathan is a dreamer, always on the move chasing new and exciting adventures. I like how he and Connie are similar yet different. They both share trust issues due to a parent, but their natures are polar opposites. I like how Jonathan matured as he got older. The changes were subtle and his decision instead of being goaded into it. But what I love the most about Jonathan is how he gave Connie space when she desperately needed to sort out her life.
Connie is a practical and level-headed woman, one who is determined not to repeat her mother’s mistakes. I understand Connie’s uncertainties where Jonathan is concerned, but sometimes I feel she allows those fears to color her decisions. I admire how she does not jump willie-nillie into a relationship, especially when neither have yet to resolve their issues with their absentee parent. But what I like the most about Connie is how she impulsively took the initiative to further their relationship at the end.
WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER is book two in Caridad Pineiro’s contemporary romance series, AT THE SHORE. I have not read the first book, so I am uncertain if the two stories coincide at the same time because Maggie and Owen’s romance continues in the background. That, however, did not hamper my ability to follow the plot and storyline.
WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER is a sweet tale of two wounded souls reconciling their past and trust issues to forge a new future. I am familiar with the author’s paranormal works, so this series is a nice change of pace, especially the light-hearted tone of storytelling. I cannot wait for Emma and Carlo’s story.
Oh Connie! I get that your dad left, but that does not mean that Jonathan is just like him. Walking out on your family is not the same as travelling the world and finding your passion. But hey a book needs drama so let us begin.
Connie and Jonathan shared a summer long ago. But he dropped out of College and she went on to become a lawyer cos she wanted stability.
But they always meet again since her BFF is neighbor to his family, and cos her BFF Maggie and Owen, J's brother hooked up in book 1.
They banter, they want each other. I want her to let loose and forget about her big plan. I like how he does not give up because he know they are meant to be. I do like a man who gives chase and is not the one running away.
The book actually takes place at the same time as book 1 did. So the big thing I already guessed there. It makes me wonder if book 3 takes place at the same time too since they seem to be doing a dance around too.
But cute and nice
Narrator Veronica Worthingon I was not totally on board with book 1, I felt like her voices blended together and everyone sounded the same. But here they do not. Maybe she got better. Cos here everything fits and i like her narration and voices
Part of Connie's story takes place at the same time as Maggie's (book 1). And yes, I was right. Connie and Jon fell in love one summer while both were in college. Differences led to their breakup. This being romancelandia, neither quite forgot the other and the flame still burns. They re-connect years later. Jon is a successful inventor and Connie a successful lawyer. While I did like this and was invested in the story, I felt for 2 adults (mid-late twenties) this was way too angsty. I lost track of my eye rolls. But, they both did get their shit together for a HEA. Finally.
I found Jonathan a very fun and spontaneous guy, a perfect guy to date when you are young and reckless, the only problem with a guy like this is that you fear that is all they ever want, to have fun. He didn't want to live with the rules his father wanted to set on him so he broke out of them. Connie is the opposite of Jonathan in fact she is too rigid and doesn't know how to have fun. She was a little annoying at times. I think that they made a good couple. Jonathan brings the fun out in Connie no matter how reluctant she is. This book was full of feels and had some pretty interesting twists. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Overall an enjoyable book. A few unexpected twists that made a refreshing change from other books in this genre. Pineiro definitely gives a satisfying read, though at times I did feel as if the primary roadblocks for the main characters was gnawed at a few too many times.

What Happens in Summer is a nice beach read with friends and families, both steamy and sweet romance along with love. There’s of course dysfunction, angst and discord as well as lives to be lived that isn’t always in sync with the others. The book takes place in New Jersey and New York City with the shore playing a big part. Jon and Owen have a family beach house in Sea Kiss as does Maggie’s family and the homes are side by side. She and Connie are best friends so Connie spent time there as well. She and Jon had a romance when they were both in college and Maggie and Owen have always had an attraction to each other but neither acted on it until now. Will any of their dreams come true?
The lengthy prologue set the stage for the story and took us back to where it both began and ended. Connie and Jon had different views on life and she’s nothing if not a planner. When Jon disappointed her there’s no turning back or is there? The story takes place seven years later when their paths cross again. Will they pick up where they left off or will the past continue to shape their future?
There are a lot of twists and turns to the story as Jon and Connie reconnect. Their family life and how they grew up seems to shape how they approach relationships and love. Watching the one step forward and two or three back approach that the characters all seem to take was heart wrenching. Seeing how Connie works so hard at the prestigious NYC law firm without getting the recognition she should was heartbreaking. When she and Jon are together it seems right at least to him. Connie still doesn’t know what to think or feel and the more time she spends with Jon the more the doubts continue. Their relationship is playful and caring but with lots of doubts on Connie’s end pulling them down.
The characters had more depth to them than I expected and the story flowed smoothly. Jon’s dog, Dudley, was a nice addition to the story and seemed to understand everything going on around him. The interactions between the characters had a realism to it. There was some closure and a happily-ever-after or two especially with the epilogue but there still seems to be some loose ends regarding some of the characters and their relationships.
Pineiro is a new to me author only having read the novella, Stay the Night that was part of an anthology. I look forward to reading more contemporary romances she pens as well as reading the first book in this series, One Summer Night. I hope the series will continue since there’s more story to tell.
Favorite Quote: As she closed her eyes and sleep slipped in, so did dreams of Jonathan and of the love they’d shared. Of the way he could make her laugh or make her burn with need or hold her close and soothe her hurts. She hadn’t dreamed of him for so long, but for this night, she let herself imagine how things might have been different between them. The dreams she drifted off to were filled with love, hope, and the promise of happily ever after.
Another enjoyable, easy read in this series with a second-chance at love, some great friendships, and a totally adorable pup named Dudley!
I just loved Jonathan. Despite being disowned by his father, he’s managed to become very successful, taking his own path in life and doing things his own way. This path has given him a bit of reputation as a playboy and wanderer, but now he’s ready to put down some roots, and coming face to face with the girl from his past, he knows just who he wants to create a future with – if only he can get her to realize he can be a sure thing.
There were a lot of things about Connie that I loved, but boy she could get me a bit irritated. She’s struggled with relationships since her father abandoned her and her mother when she was young, and she’s determined to never put herself in the same position her mother found herself in, having to give up her dreams because of a man. I get that she was cautious but I really wanted her to just ask Jonathan what his plans were instead of assuming he wouldn’t want to commit…and don’t get me started on her dumping him when they had their first fling in college! What I did really like about her was watching her fight for her career, standing up for herself, and then being able to realize that reaching her dream didn’t necessarily mean giving anything up, it just meant having to adjust the path she was on to get to her destination.
One of things I am really enjoying about this series is the relationships between the characters. There is family drama with some pretty big secrets, there is love and loss, and there are some awesome friendships that set the backdrop for this series. The friendship between Jon and his brother is so solid, and Connie has her group of friends that are so supportive but also keep things real for each other.
This book happens during some of the same timeline as the first book in the series, One Summer Night, so although some of the storyline at parts is similar, it was fun to find out what was going on behind the scenes for Jon and Connie while Owen and Maggie were finding their own happy ever after.
The author’s writing style and voice made this easy to read. The pacing was good – it did slow down a bit for me when they slowed the relationship down, I thought the “we need to make this relationship be more than about the great sex” got a bit overdone - but the few twists kept the pages turning and there was a sweetness to the romance that had me all-in when it came to Connie and Jon.
Definitely worth grabbing and would make a great beach read!
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley which I voluntarily reviewed.
Books with Hispanic heroines are rare, so I was excited that What Happens in Summer had a leading lady with Cuban heritage. Unfortunately, that heritage played no significant part in the story and the book itself was a very average romance.
Connie Reyes has a plan for her life, a plan that doesn’t include being dependent on a man. Ever. For anything. So, when she falls in love with Jonathan (Jon) Pierce during summer break while still in college, she’s stunned. That hadn’t been on the agenda, but she creates a new dream where they go to school near each other, graduate, marry and have fab careers, together every step of the way. When Jon informs her that he plans to quit college, Connie explodes. Her father was irresponsible and undependable, and she can’t have that in her life again. The two have a nasty breakup and part company with anger and hurt on both sides.
Seven years down the road and they are both leading romance novel lives. Jon is now
…revolutionizing the motor vehicle and battery industries with his innovative designs, unconventional methods, and fearless experiments.
Connie is a hot shot lawyer who is being considered for partner. And, of course, she
…had persuaded her firm’s partners into taking on quite a number of small clients who might not otherwise have been able to obtain the kind of representation needed for their legal issues
because romance novel heroines have heart along with their ambition.
The two would have gone on ignoring and avoiding each other forever but unfortunately it is not to be. Her best friend and Jon’s brother are in love. But it’s complicated. There is some sort of family feud separating them, and the couple doesn’t have the cojones to deal with the problem on their own. Enter Jon and Connie, who in the name of supporting their friends and family, wind up seeing each other again. The setup for our reunion romance is complete. See the rest of my review at https://allaboutromance.com/book-revi...
I enjoyed Jon and Connie’s romance, even when I got a bit frustrated by Connie’s trust issues. Jon has his own trust issues, yet I found his easier to follow along with his progress than I did Connie. Her inability, due to her mother’s life and actions, to take Jon’s interest at face value and not be constantly waiting for him to break her heart by leaving again truly broke my own heart and frustrated it as well. The clues, the tells that Jon has changed over the years are clear to be seen, yet Connie seems blind to them for a very long time. What kept Connie from being annoying in her lack of trust was very simple… I “got” her fears, they are very clearly defined. I simply wanted to give her a hug and tell her to go with it and trust herself even if she couldn’t trust Jon. Time and circumstances will open up Connie’s heart to accepting that Jon really can stay with her. Until then, while I felt for Connie I also wanted her to simply take a chance, but that was hard for her to do.
We’re getting ready for a wedding, there is romance in the air and in the background so there are other things going on beside Jon and Connie’s developing relationship. I don’t feel you “have” to have read the first story, One Summer Night, to enjoy this one it is also an enjoyable romance that I believe you’d enjoy. I will always suggest starting from the beginning, but sometimes that isn’t possible so you could read What Happens in Summer on its own without worry. I had fun with this story and would recommend it to any Contemporary Romance reader.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
So, there's that saying "opposites attract" that is demonstrated in real life and in fiction. Rich/poor. Fire/ice. Popular/nerdy. Free spirit/disciplined. Whatever pairing I have come across, whether in real life or in fiction, I have found that those differences are what makes for strong couples. It's not power play. It's not submission. It's balance. Yin and yang. A complemented pairing that works.
Connie and Jonathan have been different since before now. She refused to be like her mother so she's overly cautious, suspicious even. It makes for a great lawyer mindset but not so for a relationship one. He refused to live by his dad's rules so he rebelled and made his own mark on the world. His young man rebellion brought him acclaim unimaginable but it's also keeping him from the one woman he wants. She's still the woman he longs for, but she doesn't see a man worth giving a second chance to because he walked away all those years ago.
Time and experience have a way of changing people, and it was very obvious that Jonathan was not the same person now as he was then. It was just hard and slightly frustrating to watch Connie see it and doubt it. There were way too many moments when I was torn between wanting to throw something at her because she was that frustrating, and wanting to give her a hug because I wanted her to see the amazing man standing in front of her.
Settling the past and making peace with it were essential for them to have a fighting chance for forever. When they did, it was definitely time for their future to begin. Ms. Pineiro did a lovely job wrapping up the loose ends so they could move forward. For Connie and Jonathan, it was a long time coming and their second chance was worth waiting for.
This is an engaging story about a couple who fell in love early in their college years. Because their personalities and goals were so different, they split up. Years later they met again and she is a successful lawyer working in New York City, just as she always planned. He is now a very successful business man who took an unusual route to get to where he is today. Their attraction to each other is immediately rekindled. Their friends and relatives provide tremendous influence, support, and love. It isn’t all that usual in romance stories for people to have strong, healthy relationships with friends and relatives. This book also provides a look into unhealthy relationships, which several of the characters also experience. I very much enjoyed this book. I love reading about successful women who are doing quite well on their own. So many romance books concoct silly challenges for the couples. This book provides some realistic challenges for them to overcome. The book is very well written. The story progresses beautifully and smoothly. I recommend this book. I was provided this book in exchange for an honest review.
Many years ago Jonathan Pierce and Connie Reyes had a little teenage fling, they were madly in love one minute, and then they were not the next, and shortly after things fizzled out between them they went their separate ways and they haven't spoken since. But now they find themselves attending the same wedding, and Jonathon would love nothing more than to use the opportunity to show Connie he is a better man, one that will treat her the way he should have treated her back then... but Connie has her reservations about him. He broke her heart once, and she isn't so willing to put it back in his hands again...
What Happens in Summer is a sweet, heartfelt, second chance romance that is sure to have romance readers swooning throughout! With it's drama filled story line, and shore side locale, it makes the perfect summer read! I am a sucker for second chance romances and I have to say this one definitely hit the mark, it was engaging, heartwarming, and left me smiling! Highly recommend!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
This book picks up where the last book ended. Plus you also get the back story of Connie Reyes who is now an attorney for a big law firm in New York, and Jonathon Pierce. Jonathon who has been disowned by his father now has started his own company and is very successful. Along with his partners they are looking at building a new factory in the town he has always considered his home. Now he is on a mission to somehow convince Connie that she is the one for him. She is a tough one mainly because of her home life and because of that she likes to have everything planned out in advanced. Now though as her job is not what she thought it was going to be and the idea of being with Jonathon, and a new job opportunity happening she is even thinking about walking on the wild side without a plan. There are a surprises in this story and overall this is a very good story all around. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
Connie Reyes and Jonathan Pierce meet and fall in love while on Summer break from college. They both want to continue their relationship past the summer, but when Jonathan let’s Connie know that he is quitting college to figure out what he wants to do with his life, she dumps him. Fast forward eight years and they are the maid of honor and best man in her best friend and his brothers wedding. Jonathan is a successful businessman (think Elon Musk) and Connie is working in a Manhattan law firm trying to make partner. Both still have feelings for each other, but need to work through their parental abandonment issues to work their way to their happily ever after. This is a nice second chance romance. I was given an ARC of this book for my honest review of this book.
Received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review....
I read book one of this series, so I was excited to see book two available.
What I loved: Hmmm....not entirely sure that I LOVED anything about this. It was a nice story, but I can't say LOVE....enjoyed yes, What I liked: I really liked this story. It was exactly what I expected and there is nothing wrong with that. What I hated: This reiterated book one...ALOT. That started to drive me crazy. It was kind of interesting to see the parallel storylines, but it felt like too much rehashing of the first book at times. Actual Stars....3.75
I received an Advanced Reader Copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the second book of the At the Shore series. I doubly love the book because I am from the Jersey Shore and while the name of the town is fictional. many the places are based on real locations here. This story is about Connie and Jonathan, who had a summer fling while they were in college. Even though they were madly in love, their own baggage comes between them. Connie is friends with Maggie, who has a house at the and Jonathan and Owen, his brother have the summer house next door. This book happens in the same timeframe as book 1 so there are some spoilers. This is a beautiful second chance story.
A quick and easy summer read. Starts out years ago, when Connie and Jon are having a summer fling. When Connie is obsessed with want security, after her father's fly by night style, she and Jon have a big fight, when he doesn't want to go back to college. Years later, they meet up again, when her best friend and his brother are getting married. Sparks are still there, and after a lot of give and take, there is a HEA. This is the second book in the series, and while I didn't read that one I had no problem following the story. Would recommend. A big plus with Dudley, who adds a nice touch
Connie and Jon can’t be more different. She follow the rules, college, a job, a place to settle. Jonathan can’t stay for long in a place, he doesn’t know what will bring his future. So after a summer romance they fall apart. Seven years later they paths cross again and the attraction is still ther. But have they a chance to be together? They have to face their past and come clean in order to be have their happi ever after. A sweet love story about love, friendship, forgiviness nd second chances. I received a free copy of this book from AXP books and voluntarily read and review it.
This book is a great beach read!!!! The story takes place on the Jersey shore. Connie Reyes and Jonathan Pierce only realized how different they both were after a magical summer spent on the Jersey shore. She was ambitious and practical he was artistic and rebellious. Their parting was heartrending the years have only made a reunion less possible. Now Jonathan is back having made a fortune in tech. He has everything money can buy but his bed is empty and his heart is hollow. He has never stopped thinking about Connie and he will do anything to show her the man he has become!!!!
This one is my favorite of the At the Shore series where emotional love stories play out amongst friends weddings and a tight knit beach community. Connie’s character really resonates - like so many women in traditionally male-dominated fields she’s facing workplace issues most of us can relate to - add in the complications with Jon and trying to pivot a career while trying not to get your heart broken again? Yep - you’ll feel her! But Jon’s her perfect match—he just has to convince her she’s got him pegged all wrong!
Connie and Jonathan had a summer fling the summer before Jon decided not to go back to law school. Jon wanted to continue their relationship but he had no idea what his future plans were. Jon’s lack of a plan and the sense that he will come and go like her father has Connie running for the hills. It isn’t until Maggie’s wedding that they reconnect. Can they get past their hurts and move forward together? More secrets are spilled between Jon and his family.
While this is book two in this series it can easily be read as a standalone. It actually kind of takes place concurrently with book one. Second chance stories are one of my favorite romance tropes and this one was great. I enjoyed the voice actor and think she did a great job. Caridad Pineiro writes a wide variety of romance novels and I enjoy her work.
This is a sweet summer second chance romance with two likeable characters. Connie has a difficult time trusting Jonathan after he broke her heart as teenagers. Will she be able to trust him or will she lose him due to her inability to see the new Jonathan? Reading this by the pool is a perfect way to spend a summer day!
I found this book on NetGalley and loved the cute cover. After reading the description I wanted to read the book however I should have stopped there. Unfortunately this was a DNF at about 40%. I had a hard time getting into the book (the formatting for me didn’t help) and connecting with the characters.
What Happens in Summer by Caridad Piñeiro is a sexy, second-chance, feel-good, contemporary romance where you can't help but fall in love with Jonathan Pierce. Gosh, is he sexy?!
right from the first page you get the main characters and the story. It starts in teen years then we jump to a love story about adults. Speaking of adult, the sex scene is 6 pages long. whew! The characters were likeable and the story had plenty of twists to keep interest all the way through.
