I can’t remember ever reading a book like Steve Veasey’s “Thin Spaces”. It’s a hard book to classify, and that’s a very good thing. It speaks to Veasey’s innovation and creativity. Part poetry collection, part narrative, part memoir, part inspirational guidebook, and illustrated with Veasey’s own tremendous illustrations throughout, Veasey has created a book that doesn’t shy away from being vulnerable, humorous, authentic, and spiritual. Though it’s seasoned with the author’s explorations of his faith, a reader of “Thin Spaces” certainly need not be religious. There is so much to savor in this outstanding work, for faithful, for seekers, for questioners, for all of us trying to simply survive in this strange world upon which we’ve found ourselves.
What I enjoyed about this book is the intentionality and unique approach to writing. The story comes in the form of prose. There is a playlist designed for you to listen to while reading. And each chapter ends in an illustration by the author. But what I think is most unique is how accessible Steve’s story of faith has been written. I imagine that those who are still deeply involved in institutionalized Christianity like myself will have just as much to take away as those who have never thought much of religion at all. Steve writes with a grace, humility, and wonder that you can’t help but admire. This is a book I think you should try.
Thin Spaces is unlike any book I’ve ever read before. It deals with the topics of faith, religion, spirituality, life, hurt, and healing from a deeply personal, vulnerable, and honest perspective. It doesn’t shy away from the difficult parts, but yet, shows the healing and beauty that can be found in the midst of life’s pain, struggles, and uncertainties. Steve Veasey’s Thin Spaces is an incredible book with a powerful message. I would highly recommend it.
I’m not really the slightest bit religious so I was shocked to see how much I enjoyed reading about a persons struggles through religion. I got goosebumps almost every chapter and was super impressed by the metaphors and words and other stuff I know nothing about. What a deep, interesting, thought-provoking book. Hope he writes another!
Highly recommend this book to just about anyone. Steve does a great job of sharing life experiences that make it feel like you're talking with your creative friend over coffee.
