MY TAKE In this sixth and final book in the Time Series, readers will want to have read the book just before, where TJ finds the old bones in his fields. Emma is so curious to find out who the man was who'd been buried in that lonely field back in the Civil War days. And what she finds!
This book made me cry. Like hard cry. The kind where you've got a lump in your throat that hurts. I'm sure it's from getting to know Gideon, the Man-in-the-Field, through Emma's research. I knew I was in trouble as I got to know and like him, because reading this book was a lot like watching the movie Titanic. Just as in that film I found myself emotionally attached to a fictional character I knew had died in some dark way. And just like when you're driving by an accident scene, I couldn't look away. I had to know what happened to him.
And this is all happening around another (modern) murder mystery. Emma just can't get away from them. It has a lovely resolution for Emma and TJ and a sad but fulfilling resolution for Gideon's relatives.
I just love this series and this book is overall 2 mysteries, one during present day and the other during the Civil War era. The plot includes murder, light romance, challenging family dynamics and a mystery around the identity of some skeletal remains. The setting and character portrayals are so vivid I could easily imagine both. Other than what I learned in school I don’t know much about the Civil War — The descriptions of the Civil War time period were really intriguing and realizing how little I actually knew about this time in American history I was fascinated to learn new tidbits of southern life and the impact of the war. I was really saddened and shed some tears over how the skeletal remains came to be. It was a big ahah moment when near the end of the book I realized that one of the characters was a repeat scoundrel who had played a significant role in an earlier book in this series. I can’t wait to see where the author takes us next!
A wonderful conclusion of a great series. I'm sad it's over. Emma and TJ grew to be good friends of mine. Gideon's storyline was a welcome fulfilling epilogue. Poor Emma sr, what a tragic episode in her life. Good thing she had the modern Emma yo help her. Some editing would have made it easier to read but it doesn't change the great story. I'll miss these characters.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and seeing each story wrapped up with a satisfying ending. Except one. The child of the Civil War Emma who was sold to a stranger. I had some ideas on how that would play out, but in this final book of the series, we still don't know where that child ended up or what happened to it. Very disappointing! There was a hint at the end of one of the books but that story was never developed.
What a lovely story, sweet and poignant, heartfelt and heartbreaking in some parts but a story finally told and truth brought to light. I have read all the books in this series and enjoyed each and every one of them and this is no exception.
Totally recommend this beautifully crafted tale - well done Susan Reiss!
and heart touching. With every word, line and page, I was taken to Waterwood to see and feel the lives and love in this story. I really hope you continue forward with Emma looking for Emma's lost child. Thank you for the laughs, tears and joy this series has brought me.
This book was so good! Since I knew TJ , and Emma from the earlier books, this was like coming home. I absolutely love the story of Gideon. I loved this character. I was so sad to find out about how he died. The Proposal was Priceless! A Very good Ending! Will there be a book 7?
If actual time travel isn’t possible, this is the next best thing. The last book left us wondering who was the man found buried on the grounds of Wildwood. A peek into the people who lived during the Civil War, what happened back then affects the people of today.
Really good book. I couldn’t put it down. Followed two story lines that seemed to merge at the end. Hope this is not the last book in this series. There are more stories that can be told. Loved it!!!
I have mixed feelings about the book. I really enjoyed the modern day sections and I’m glad that the author wrapped up the series the way she did. But I never really connected with the sections that were set in the past.
Ms. Reiss has written an emotional, breath-taking, brilliant novel. The characters are dynamic, vibrant, engaging. A book you will want to read in one sitting. Outstanding and second to none. Very Highly Recommended.
As this series has progressed so have the number of type "o's". #6 has way too many typed errors. I have enjoyed this series nun the less. I hope future books will be thoroughly proof read.
This writer is amazing, and her books are, too. I really enjoyed this one because of the diverse setting—Mississippi, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and St. Michael. Everything fits neatly to create a terrific story.
Susan Reiss has wrote about murder, ghosts and romance. I love her books and can’t get enough of them. I love her talent to put into words that keep me interested.
