The Collector

Rate this book
The Collector sits silently alone, engrossed in her tales of lust, submission and dominance. Has she already engraved your erotic exploits on her salacious list? She may look like she is scribbling randomly in her notebook, but she is secretly listening to, and recording, the overheard fantasies and indiscretions of others.
Forever hungry for stories, when The Collector's sources run dry, her appetite for tales of instruction and voyeurism drives her to do some research of her own before sharing her provocative experiments on paper. It is time for the world's raunchiest chronicler to come to light.

The premise is simple – Kay Jaybee is “the collector”, the woman sitting at the back of the bus, in the corner of the cafe or in your local library. You may ignore her, thinking she’s just a woman scribbling in a notebook. But if you, or someone around you, is talking about something remotely naughty, Kay’s writing it down.

This book is the result of Kay Jaybee’s collection of stories. Each chapter features an introduction, followed by the story itself. Some are much shorter than others and some are much naughtier than others. But one thing is consistent – they’re all incredibly sexy.

What I really loved about this book was the fact it all felt very real. The author herself admitted that there are embellishments on some of the stories, and that some have come purely from her imagination. But what makes it so interesting is the fact that the erotic escapades between the covers of the book could happen.

The tales aren’t about desert islands or exotic places we can only dream about. It could be real. Your neighbour could be doing it. Your colleagues could be doing it. That woman in the supermarket. Anyone, anywhere. And for me, that made it very, very sexy.

I also loved the brevity of the stories. They don’t need to be any longer. They’re just snippets of life; naughty sex scenes. There’s no “they met, they fell in love and fell into bed” type thing. No character development is needed. It’s just pure, unadulterated filth. And it’s fabulous. Highly recommended.

The conceit of this book is that an author who conveniently overhears or even prods strangers and friends into confessing erotic moments from their past. I couldn't help, in a way, of being reminded of Ray Bradbury's short story collection, The Illustrated Man. Each chapter tells another person's story through their own voice, each introduced by the author.

The result is a pretty solid book that explores a wide variety of kinks and characters. The author flows through vignette after vignette in fairly quick order. Some tales are longer, some shorter. Each allows us to see through the eyes of the various characters telling their tales. The characters mostly feel realistic and the scenes they spin seem largely plausible, if not exaggerated.

I couldn't help but find the overall affect of their stories, however, somewhat hollow. I found myself wanting for a greater emotional connection with the characters. Their motivations are occasionally explored, but rarely with a depth that really lets me feel I know them. That is, no doubt, due in large part to the conceit of the book itself, so it's perhaps unfair to fault the author for that.

I also felt too much like I was hearing the narration through the author's voice rather than through the voices of her confessors. The style of the writing remains too consistent throughout, and as a result it seemed I was hearing a retelling of their stories, rather than hearing their stories themselves. Again, I don't know that that is necessarily fair, but I couldn't help but feel myself wanting to hear their individual voices ring out more clearly.

Nonetheless, this was a very enjoyable read and one I absolutely recommend. The ambition in assembling this project is inspiring, and the writing is top-notch. I look forward to exploring more titles from Kay Jaybee.

The Collector by Kay Jaybee.
What can I say about Kay? Kay is a wonderfully talented writer that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The Collector is about a writer that goes out to collect stories for her manuscripts. She hangs out in the most public places and listens in on people’s conversations. There are some wild and sexy tales in this collection. When I was reading them, I thought I had them figured out but then she blows my mind and it is so not what I thought. I was surprised to say the least. This book is a great collection of short stories that is in the brilliant mind of Kay Jaybee. Well done Kay, well done...I received this book as a review copy in return for an honest review

The Collector by Kay Jaybee is an eclectic collection of 20 erotic short stories. The book is really like a box of chocolates, as the saying goes, you never know what you’re going to get. One thing is for certain, you’re going to love every tasty little morsel.

The stories are collected by the author as she goes about her day, unassumingly, overhearing conversations on a bus, asking for stories directly from a nearby patron or a friend, you name it. Most people are willing to tell her their tales. Some of the stories are short, while others are quite tiny, being only a page or so in length. Each story, nonetheless, is complete. The range of erotica is wide...from sweet innocence and self discovery, to intensely kinky and wicked. Each is a delight.

I find it difficult to say which of the stories is my favorite because they are all good in their own unique way. I can only recommend reading them all and deciding for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

I received this book as a review copy in return for an honest review.

Okay , I'm biased- I wrote this one. It was my first solo book, and I love it, despite the blood, sweat and sleepless nights that went into writing and researching it.

This slim volume of twenty sexual scenarios is not quite a collection of full-bodied stories, but it has its own charm. The author explains that she is the “collector” of the title, and that she collects other people’s stories about sexual adventures.

The author (whose pen name looks like three initials) suggests that she blends in with the middle-class “shopping population” of an English town, and that her interest in other people’s sex lives is matched by their willingness to tell her about them.

Kay Jaybee (or K.J.B.) apparently does hands-on research with attractive strangers as well. She explains her method:

“This usually entails a trip away from my residence in Oxford to London, where I take a short lease on a flat, adopt a more suitable persona (I should have been on the stage), and explore areas of potential inspiration.”

The combination of pseudonymous coyness and scavenger-hunt references to specific routes and locations (such as “the bus from Five Mile Drive to St. Giles in Oxford”) will look familiar to anyone who reads the “true confessions” stories in certain sex magazines. Who is Kay Jaybee really? If one were to look for a woman holding a notebook and a pen in any of the places mentioned, could one be written into her next book?

In her epilogue, the author brags:

“The gambit [gamut:] of sexual experience within the bounds of this small country, indeed, within the bounds of the English Home Counties alone, is wide indeed.”

Unfortunately, these sketches don’t capture a range of different voices, and the vocabulary drips with cliché. Here a young woman, “Jay,” is described being led into a lesbian scene in a nightclub:

“Pressed against the mirrored wall, armed placed high behind her spiky red hair, a fantastically curvaceous girl had her eyes tightly closed. Kneeling before her, an eager petite woman was licking between her spread legs, soft fingers teasing the skin above sheer silk hold-ups.”

The information in these vignettes is strictly sexual, presumably because of its confidential nature. The author explains that in some cases, her interview subjects only consented to reveal the details of their sex lives after she promised them anonymity. To keep her promise, the author supposedly had to eliminate all information which could identify them.

The stories in this collection cover a spectrum of situations, genders and activities. The relatively vanilla scenes are not separated from those based on popular fetishes (especially voyeurism and exhibitionism, which seem inherent in this collection) or percussion scenes involving various implements (a belt, a cane, a riding crop, a whip). Males and females mix and mate and impersonate each other in adjoining stories. This kind of promiscuity looks particularly English to me, and it suggests an upper-class tradition of specialized tastes under a façade of heterosexual respectability.

Objects used in the scenes include “sweets” (a lollypop used as a dildo, licorice boot laces for bondage, tingling powder licked onto skin). Then there is the lady who advertises her services in the back of a car magazine, and who is described stretched over the bonnet of an upscale vehicle, getting beaten and fucked while pressed against into its smooth metal surface. In one notable experiment (called “Treasures”), the author introduces a male friend to her collection of sex toys, and he shows his submissive side.

Most of the Dominant/submissive stories are male-dominant. In a scene in an actual castle, a young man responds to his female friend’s request by playing the role of a torturer:

“Paul, keeping the flame as close as possible to her cunt, began to blow softly against her vulnerable flesh. Heather leapt within her bonds as, for a fraction of a second, his soft breath brushed the flame onto her skin.”

In another story, a young man in a nightclub picks up a bit of “rough trade,” a laborer whose van is parked outside:

“He undid the back doors of the box van and almost threw me in. He really was as massively strong as I had fantasized. Not fat, but big and hard and toned. My mouth almost watered at what was about to happen.”

The van-driver takes over:

“He roughly pulled me closer and dragged my t-shirt over my head, leaving my bare chest to shiver against the van’s dank atmosphere. Then, forcing me to my knees, he offered his shaft to my mouth. I took it without hesitation. It almost filled my throat, forcing me to choke a little as I accommodated its width and length.”

Without words, the van-driver does various other things to his willing victim until he is sore. Then the Alpha Male gently offers to “sort out” his playmate, and gives him relief.

This book can be read in short segments of time, and the sexual descriptions are playful and clear. The cover art is discreet. The author concludes:

“I shall leave you now, and head off to continue my search. The fantasies of the British public are just waiting for me to find them. I’ll head to Scotland first I think, then maybe Devon and Cornwall, possibly Wales. . . I’ll see you there. . .”

The reader is left with the sense that the story collection is unfinished and interactive, a good spur to the activities it is clearly intended to inspire. This reviewer would like to read something more filling, so to speak, but this book is what it is, and it does what it does. Enjoy.

THE COLLECTOR may be the hottest and coolest book I've read this year.

The author, let's call her "Jen," looks benign, but she's a collector. She collects stories. Private stories. Raunchy, wicked, filthy, crazy, sexy, hot, private, erotic stories. Sometimes people tell her their stories, sometimes she eavesdrops discreetly, once in awhile the stories are hers. In THE COLLECTOR, she shares more than twenty of those stories for us lucky voyeurs. Some of these tales are sweet, like the two women who realize their feelings for one another are more than friendship in Late Developer, and some are wild, like the alcohol-fueled gangbang experience of an escort's first gig in Tequila. There's loads of BDSM, anonymous encounters, some threesomes, foursomes and moresomes, creative uses for foodstuffs and inanimate objects, girl on girl, guy on guy and some solo action, and even an interesting 90's political era "define sex" encounter. So sit back and relax, grab a bottle of merlot and settle in for some quick and dirty stories that will curl your toes.

WOW, what a GREAT book! Ms. Jaybee, the true author of THE COLLECTOR, honestly has me curious if she is, in fact, this collector. Her intros were so well written and believable that I fell under an erotic spell while reading. I didn't LOVE every story, but I really did at least LIKE almost all of them for one reason or another. My favorites were Treasure, where a woman invites a friend of a friend back to her place so he can discover her hidden treasure; and Crushed, where a 2 (and a half) people in a standstill crowd experienced a hedonistic anonymous encounter. If I heard real life stories like these on a regular basis, I swear I would die from a state of constant arousal!

Some of my other favorites included Watching and Executive School. But seriously, all of these stories were the TLC of books--crazy, sexy and cool. I truly hope that Ms. Jaybee decides to continue in this direction periodically and give us some more collections. After all, I still have a LITTLE drool left!

The Collector is a compendium of erotic experience. Kay Jaybee is the woman sat at the back of the bus, in the quiet corner of the library, or at the table across from you in the cafe. She may look like she is just scribbling in her notebook, but secretly she is discreetly taking down the indiscretions of others. Every chapter covers another of these erotically-charged escapades; whether of domination or submission, lesbianism or onanism. Each lust filled tale is provocatively written.

An exciting, saucy gathering of short tales gathered from overheard conversations, willing sources and personal experiences of The Collector. Ranging from sweetly sexy to moderately kinky to downright darkly filthy. This is a must read for all erotica fans. My personal favourite - Studio Girl. Another superb selection from Ms. Jaybee.

I love the premise of how the author put the stories together. Sexuality is as individual as each human and these stories demonstrate that. The writing is clean and crisp and I loved how the author expresses our erotic nature. I hope there is a continuation as in Book 2. I highly recommend this book.

Kay is one of my favorite erotica authors, she is smutty, smart, and very creative. This is her first solo compilation and is definitely a good place to start. She's been very prolific over the years so you won't run out of reading material any time soon.
