After Napoleon III seized power in 1851, French writer Victor Marie Hugo went into exile and in 1870 returned to France; his novels include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).

This poet, playwright, novelist, dramatist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, and perhaps the most influential, important exponent of the Romantic movement in France, campaigned for human rights. People in France regard him as one of greatest poets of that country and know him better abroad.

I’ve never read a book like this. It’s crazy how Hugo goes into tangents and then brings you back to the narrative. Ngl tho I was bored with the battle of Waterloo tangent but the other ones were kinda entertaining —like the Paris sewer system one. All the characters were iconic and the story was impeccable. Idk if I will ever read a book like this in my life but I’m glad I did cuz now I have this book to compare every other book to. Even though it was long, I can see Hugo’s vision and acknowledge that it’s a masterpiece of literary fiction and can justify the length of this work. Everyone should read this one at least once in their lifetime!
