A good book for people that are looking for a general picture of trees and their metaphysical properties. It summarises briefly many trees and also generally discusses how one can work with them. As a student of Astrology, I found it very interesting that in the book most trees were being linked to the planets and their energies. On a critical note: it would have been nice if the author added pictures of the trees, instead I needed to search them online. Also: sometimes I wanted to read a more detailed story and found it too summarising.
I've been reading this more as a reference when I want to learn more about a particular tree. I really appreciate having information on different trees as they relate to myth all in one book; it's mostly Celtic myth, but there is some Greek myth as as well. If you aren't familiar with the myths already, I'm not sure how helpful the book would be. Likewise if you haven't already met a tree in the wild and don't know what it looks like. But if you're interested in myth and trees, this is a helpful book for connecting bits of information.
Living in North America, I've also been working on learning about native trees that correspond to the trees in the book. I don't think there's a book on this topic, but there are online resources that help.
This is a good introduction to Ogham, and very informative and entertaining. Definitely worth a read if you have any interest in these matters. Also a good reference book to have on the shelf. However I gave it 3 stars merely because all of this information can be found scattered over the internet if you have good Google-fu, as is the case with most "encyclopedia" material. Still - I enjoyed it.
I couldn't stomach the audiobook and dropped it after only 5% read. I didn't recognize so many names despite studying much Celtic history and lore. It was when she mispronounced Genus Loci that I knew the narrator simply can't pronounce non-English words to save her life. The information in this book might be good but DEFINITELY skip the audiobook.
This book features botanical descriptions, the medicinal and healing properties, as well as other practical knowledge on many different types of trees. That information is rounded out by detail on their various magical uses as well as divinatory meanings. Additionally there is a great deal of information on the ogham alphabet, and some general Celtic mythology and folklore.
Unfortunately, it appears that there is something of a communication breakdown when switching between the history, metaphysical, and autobiographical portions of the book. The “voice” is just so different that is almost seems as if those parts were written by three different authors. Taken individually none of these portions are bad, but having no clear segue it is somewhat jarring to read as a whole.
As someone relatively familiar with Celtic history and mythology, but new to the realm of tree oghams, I was extremely impressed by this book and it deepened my understanding of the sacred connection between trees and the Celtic tradition. I found myself captivated by the author's passion, depth of knowledge and reverence for trees that permeates this book. The book not only covers the commonly known trees associated with the Ogham, but it also delves into the lesser-known species, exploring their unique qualities and symbolism. The author expertly condenses historical research and mythology with practical application for one's own spiritual path. This work immediately found a coveted place on my reference shelf because of it's wealth of knowledge.
