The Bible, the Word of God is the most precious book in the world! I read it and read it and never grow tired of it - its pages give light, truth and strength day after day. The same passage always hides a deeper truth…it speaks to me and its very words are life…. This book will always be on my 'currently reading' shelf, despite the fact I have read it through numerous times. I will continue to do so by the grace of God until I can read no more.
I have read this translation several times and I think it is my favourite English one. I have a study Bible version with a concordance, which is priceless. As always: I'm not reviewing the contents, the Bible is the Word of God and not to be judged, a lamp to my feet and a light on my path.
I've gone back and reread Genesis while listening to Jordan Peterson's lecture series on the Genesis stories... Wow, I had no idea. Often as Christians much of the Old Testament is kinda "the stories we will not speak of" as so often they are outlandish and and strange and archaic... I think this is a mistake, I think these stories are so deep, there is so much in them, we should spend a lot more time going over these stories and working out just what they meant to the people who created them and what they mean to us today... It is a lot.
The laws and the Chronicles get to being a bit much, the genealogies get tiring and I don't always know what to make of them, perhaps Peterson will do some explaining of these as well.
I think to take these stories lightly, to take them merely at face value or to take them as merely the mythology of an archaic primitive people is to not do them justice.
The New Testament is the same, only more so. This reading was a reading cover to cover, I look forward to rereading this and really delving into it and studying it. I'm confident there is a whole lot I don't understand and won't understand, but I'm also sure a lot more will be revealed to me with subsequent readings.
This is the greatest book I have ever read. Strike that. This is the greatest book ever written.
With that said, this is not a review of the Bible. After all, what right can I possibly have to review the Bible? No, the way this really works is that I let the Bible review me. How deeply am I hiding it in my heart? How closely am I following its precepts? Unfortunately, there is no way that I could rate myself anywhere close to 5 stars. Yes, I am growing, but I've still got a long way to go.
This is now my 69th time reading the Bible through cover to cover. Each time I find that there is still more to learn. There is still more change that needs to take place in me. God willing, I am getting there. One day, on the other side, I will arrive.
I have read the Bible several times, but it has been a few years since I have read cover-to-cover systematic read-through. The NIV has been my favorite version for many years and I appreciate the research behind the translation. I often focus on a particular book or passage in the Bible and spend my time studying the details of God’s truth. This read was a big-picture exposure, saturating my mind with the His story of salvation. What a blessing it is to spend time each day in God’s word. I hope to read through the New Testament in the coming months in several different translations.
Excellent book, God's Word, good Kindle navigation
NIV a clear modern English translation, faithful to original Hebrew (most Old Testament or OT) and Greek (New Testament, or NT). The Bible is divided into 66 portions of books, some if which are very short.
Old Testament: Pre Jesus, from Creation to about 400yrs before Jesus. Mainly centred to Israel and their relationship with God. New Testament: Jesus's life, establishment of early church, with a number of letters to early churches, ending in Revelation, a book looking to the end times.
Good starting point: One 4 accounts of Jesus life, ie one of 1st four books in NT. Or Genesis, in OT, describing creation, and early beginnings of Israeli nation. Go on to Exodus, Leviticus is hard and can be skipped over, along with chuncks of Numbers. Read the beginning and end of Deuteronomy, history resumes in Joshua.
Kindle version has excellent navigation from Contents page, and within book. Very well thought out, and easy to use. Thoroughly recommend.
I have read the Bible three times, starting with The Jewish Study Bible or Tanakh, then the NRSV and then this NIV version. It definitely won’t be the last time either. In this third reading of the Bible, I really understood the prophecy of the Old Testament, of the coming of the Messiah or ‘the root of Jesse’ etc and how Jesus Christ is the fulfilment of that prophecy. The Bible is a truly amazing prophecy. The prophecy of the Old Testament and its fulfilment in the New Testament is the greatest achievement of mankind. The Jews or Israelites accomplished the biggest, greatest and most amazing feat in the universe and for all time. As of March 2021 I have read 148 books in my life, mostly history but also philosophy, science and religion etc, however I am coming to the conclusion that everything is auxiliary to the Bible.
Congratulations to all of you who finished this journey with me this year. The Word is alive and active. Over the years I have become strongly convinced that spreading time listening to God is one of the best ways to strengthen your relationship to God. This year is a little sentimental for me, this is year 20, and I am so grateful that each year God continues to show Himself to me in new ways each year. Thank You God for Your incredible faithfulness. Thank You Jesus for Your incredible kindness. And thank You Holy Spirit for Your abundant grace.
Dragged in places, but overall a compelling read. Second half is a lot more uplifting than the first. But I think the first half really set the stage to create a sense of relief when that tonal shift happens later on. I'm impressed with how my perception of the content has changed as I return to it over the years--almost like it's a living document. That thing with the talking donkey was hilarious.
Only the best, most purchased and most instant book in history
The NIV is the best edition of the Bible - the Word of God that is completely and authentically God breathed and essential reading for everyone on earth. If you are a Christian, interested in becoming a Christian - or just curious about the Christian faith, I can recommend this Book.
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life! The Bible reflects life before and after Christ, disciples, miracles, etc. You cannot live life without his word and him! With God, you learn how to live within his will and have a peaceful life.
I went through the NIV bible in a year plan on the Bible app. Second time reading through the Bible. The first time I did a chronological reading of the Bible.
