The Blood of the Covenant is Thicker than the Water of the Womb…
After spending months tracking down the mysterious person sending her letters, Emily finds herself face to face with the one person she never thought she’d see again…her mother.
The only problem is her mother is dead.
What started out as seemingly nothing more than a practical joke has turned deadly serious as Emily tries to grapple with the secrets of her family’s past, secrets that refuse to stay buried.
And it seems the more she fights, the more she digs herself in deeper. Cut off from everything she knows, Emily struggles to bring the truth to light.
But if she doesn’t figure out the answer to these riddles before it’s too late, she may never see the light of day, or the people she loves, again.
Wowza! Talk about skeletons in the closet… or a lake, or an abandoned house, or the trunk of a car. For the life of me, I couldn’t quite picture what was going to come to light when Emily finally confronts her long-lost Aunt. To say I was surprised by the twists and turns of the revelation is an understatement.
This book was almost two-in-one. In the first half we have Emily’s first case as a Supervisory Special Agent. She’s looking into the deaths of two suspected sex workers from a secretive, exclusive on-line ‘club.’ Watching Liam go undercover to infiltrate the group was a treat! In just a few days they’re able to close the case. And just when you think our crew, and most importantly Emily, can take a break the mystery with her aunt ratchets up exponentially.
Then we get to the second half of the book. Emily is a desperate woman by this point. As readers we watch her rush headlong into danger (again) in search of the truth, consequences be damned. I love how Alex Sigmore continues to use the cases and circumstances Emily finds herself embroiled in to turn the lens back on Emily herself. It forces Emily to look deep, acknowledge her own shortcomings, and take steps to become a better person. It’s slow-going, and I still think she’s incredibly lucky to have Zara & Liam still by her side.
This book appears to have closed the chapter on “Emily’s Family Secret” and I’m curious as to what awaits our intrepid agent next. Can’t wait to find out.
I admit, I'm a huge fan of Agent Emily Slate - and being along for the ride of her transformation and evolution has been absolutely stellar. This book is the apex and cumulative final exam for Emily: everything she has done and been through has prepared her for her new job and the ongoing annoyance in her personal life.
Aside: I do have to wonder if the name that was used for an alias was a way of acknowledging rules that were broken by the person that created those rules - if so, well done.
Overall, the Emily Slate series has yet to disappoint, and the end of this current story arc was incredibly executed. This author has a talent with maintaining a long arc over many books, and it absolutely works.
If this is the end of the Emily series, I feel that it was left in a good place. It may not be the perfect "happy Hollywood" ending, but it is an appropriate ending or natural place to stop.
With that, I'll make the cheap plug for the new Ivy Bishop series. If you've enjoyed this series, you'll love the otjer one, too. And no, I'm not being compensated for this promotion - I honestly enjoy this author's work.
Finally a climax to the built up story line of mysterious letters, stalking and attempts on Emily’s life. I thought this was a great, suspense filled plot line to wrap up Emily’s mysterious stalker. By far the deepest content of the series so far, Emily’s mother’s abuse is not for the faint of heart. I liked the resolution to the book, finally putting to bed whether or not Emily’s mother truly was back from the grave.
Emily hits a woman who steps out in front of her SUV. She's in the middle of a huge case but this woman looks like her dead mother. Turns out her mother had a twin, Laurie, that was institutionalized as a child for almost killing another 5 year old. Released at age 18 she continued her psychopathic ways abusing Emily's mother and instrumental in the death of their younger sister, Emily. She'd been in hiding under an assumed name until she learned of her niece. Everything is now out in the open, Laurie in custody and Emily, Liam, Zara, Nadia and Elliot have busted up a sex trafficking ring. This author is a great storyteller. Love this series.
Alex's books seem to be the destroyer of my day. I plan to do the mundane household chores and promise myself that I will only read for a few minutes. Yea right! Today was another day that I accomplished nothing other than read the continuing and fascinating series of Emily Slate. Twists, turns and unusual outcomes, but as always entertaining.
Another great read. Once again the author has kept the sixpence right to the end. Love the way he winds 2-3 cases around each other so you're trying really hard to figure them all out at the same time. This one with the family issue really was confusing. But it all came together in the end. I recommend this author highly.
I enjoyed this series so much and yes at times it aggravated me alot. I would get mad at things Emily did, and her stubborness, and how she treated Liam and even Zara. She had the best team and friends I have ever seen. They would die for her, and vice versa. Can't wait for the next book.
So good! I love a good FBI mystery thriller and Alex Sigmore doesn't disappoint. Talk about edge of your seat with twists and turns. Hang on!! It's a wild ride with Emily Slate and friends!!
So glad this case was finally resolved. It started several books back in the series. Outstanding twist was great too. Alex Sigmore is a fabulous writer. Keep ‘em comin’ Alex!
FBI Special Supervisory Agent Emily Slate is living the dream. She just moved into a big office that goes with her new title as well as a new house with her hunky boyfriend. But as she’s bossing her team around and slugging through paperwork, she’s missing being a part of the action. While she’s figuring all that out, her estranged aunt is in a coma in the hospital with a skeleton lying in the trunk of her burned up car. And we finally learn the truth about Emily’s family and it’s a doozy!
This is only book 14 out of 15 in this series so I can’t wait to see what happens in the finale. This entire series is free with #KindleUnlimited.
Thank you, @AlexSigmore for my gifted copy. I loved it!
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. With her new promotion of becoming a Special Supervisory Agent, Emily Slate finds herself at a crossroads in her career with the FBI. There's a lot of moving parts Emily as discovers how things really function beyond the gritty work to bring any criminal to justice; and Emily works to embrace the role of being a leader and relying upon her chosen team of trusted agents to help break open the odd case of the deaths of two sex workers.
But it's the ongoing confounding mystery of the women stalking and endangering Emily and her friends that's brought Emily to a breaking point.
And now after many cryptic letters and bizarre clues, Emily finally gets the chance to confront this maddening individual and move beyond all of the subterfuge. It's the secrets this woman holds that will again shatter Emily's world; leaving her haunted and disjointed.
The end of season two is as twisted as anything that Emily has already experienced.
I really love this series and the characters. I will say the case and the wrap up on an ongoing issue were not as engaging for me as prior books. I still enjoyed catching up with the team and the subsequent changes yet again with the team. Snd I’m looking forward to what’s to come.
