This book is the basic example of self help. Who are you? Where do you want to go? What do you do when things are hard? Cute NFL stories in there and it’s a fast read.
Personal Response: I thought this book was very good. I don’t think there was a part of this book that I didn’t like. This book taught me a lot of good lessons on how I should live life as a good person.
Plot: All-Pro Wisdom: The Seven Choices that Lead to Greatness by Matt Birk is all about life lessons. The seven choices are actually questions. The seven questions which Matt wants people to figure out are: 1. Who are you? 2. What is your purpose? 3. What kind of person do you want to be? 4. Where are you going? 5. Where can you find strength greater than yourself? 6. Who can give you guidance? 7. How are you improving today? Matt also had tons of quotes from NFL players and coaches. Matt also talked about how no one thought Matt could make it in the NFL because he was too small and not strong enough, but Matt overcame the odds and won a super bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013. Those are the main points of the book.
Characterization: Matt changed from being an NFL rookie, not expected to last long in the NFL to an NFL veteran who won a super bowl. Matt’s critics changed from thinking that Matt would never succeed in the NFL to not doubting him because he won a super bowl. Matt’s critics impacted Matt enough that he trained hard enough to become one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.
Setting: This book takes place in Minnesota from 1998 to 2008. This is where Matt started out his career in the NFL and where he learned lots of new things. This book also takes place in Maryland from 2009 to 2012. This is where Matt passed on his knowledge to younger players and where Matt won a Super Bowl.
Recommendation: I recommend this book to both males and females ages 15 and up. The reason for this book is that this age group would be just starting high school, which is a good time to learn how to live a life as a good person. This book is also full of life lessons, which could really help any high schooler. This book could be read by kids younger than 15, but this book is aimed more towards high school and up.
It's was OK, the two column format of the edition I got was kind of annoying and a lot of the quotes/captions are repeated. It's a pretty light read that offers some interesting advice, most of which was relatable. There is a heavy religious component to it that wasn't for me. However as a Ravens/NFL fan I did enjoy reading about his perspectives and quotes from other players/coaches especially John Harbaugh, Anquan Boldin and Aaron Rodgers.
Good book, easy to read. "Self help-esque". I personally find it refreshing to read athletes discuss victory, defeat, and improvement because their stories put these concepts in easy to understand anecdotes.
Motivational book that is an easy read. The book will make you question how you personally can make yourself a better person in both your professional and personal life.
