Winter Hughes has always known since she was younger that she never fit into the mold of the stereotypical girl. From the discomfort she’d feel if she had to wear girly clothes to the inability to develop a crush on guys like the other girls in her class, she knew that she was different. But that didn’t bother her one bit. Her family supported her and loved her unconditionally no matter what.
But even though her home life was great, her high school and college years were anything but. After some traumatic experiences, she sees just how cruel people can be. So, when her older brother invites her for a visit and she falls in love with the new city, she realizes that maybe a change of scenery is what she needs.
Enter Autumn, a woman she’s instantly drawn to when they meet in the elevator of their apartment complex one day. There’s a connection and tension between them. The closer they become, the more Winter realizes that it is no coincidence that they meet each other.
This is a story about love. About upset. Passion. And the struggles and rewards of being yourself.
This is the story of how Winter and Autumn became one.

Favorite quote “Well, let’s make it a million and one, my beautiful sunflower.”
Winter was instantly captivated by Autumn, the most stunning woman she had ever laid eyes on. But it wasn't just Autumn's beauty that drew Winter in; it was the connection she felt with her, the sense that they were meant to be together. Winter longed to love, honor, and protect Autumn and her daughter from the harsh realities of the world.
The story also shed light on the climate of the black church, where individuals who are different can feel judged and unwanted. As someone who comes from a church background, I know firsthand how difficult it can be for a black queer person to navigate through such a judgmental environment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book as it explored the themes of love and found family, while also acknowledging the ups and downs of life. Mrs. Noble, was incredibly kind and supportive of Winter and Autumn's relationship, which warmed my heart. On the other hand, Syd's father, Ben, seemed to ignore his own daughter's existence, reflecting the painful reality of parental abandonment that occurs far too often.
The author skillfully incorporated real-life issues into the story, making it relatable and impactful. The twists and turns kept me engaged, and I am grateful to have discovered this talented author. I eagerly look forward to her future works.
The bond between Winter and her father was a highlight of the story. Their love for each other and his joy in seeing her find happiness with Autumn was heartwarming. The overall narrative felt complete and well-written, with the relationship between Winter and Autumn flowing seamlessly, as if they were always destined to be together.
Sydney, Autumn's daughter, brought a sense of lightness and innocence to the story. Her presence added depth and charm, and I adored the special nicknames she and Winter had for each other. This beautiful tale held my attention from the very first page, thanks to the author's attention to detail and well-developed characters.
This story celebrates the journey of two women of color coming together to create their own family. As February is Black History Month, I highly recommend this book for its portrayal of beautiful women written by a talented woman of color. It is available on Kindle Unlimited, and I am excited to explore the author's other works. This reading experience has been an absolute pleasure, and I cannot express enough how much I adore this story and its characters. Simply put, it was amazing.
“You know I’d do anything for you,” she smiles and kisses me on the lips. “My Marigold.”“My Sunflower,” I reply and return her kiss.
Absolutely blasted through this one and loved learning more about Winter's past, her strength to overcome and her point of view this time. Loved seeing her feel safe to open up to more people and the deepening of Winter and Autumn's relationship which made my heart so happy!!!
It was great seeing more about the side characters and seeing their worlds combine more and both Winter and Autumn feeling accepted and loved.
