I went into this book with some reservations - I'm a mental health counselor and when I see words like "trauma" and "healing" I fear they will be buzzwords used to draw people in.
However, I was so pleasantly surprised by the content of this book. This is incredibly well-researched, which is a huge deal because, when talking about trauma, you want to ensure that people are getting accurate information and seeing current research so that they do not do farther harm to themselves or others. The information presented in the first few sections of this book are very well written and can be easily understood by professionals or those unfamiliar with the terms. It is easy to understand and I think a lot of people can connect with the information as it is presented. It goes through not only definitions, but how trauma impacts the mind, the body, and our interactions with others (things I teach to my own clients in daily therapy sessions).
I also really appreciated that the author took the time to break down specific yoga positions, what they help with, and how to offer assistance without further traumatizing the clients. While this book is aimed at current yoga instructors to become more trauma-informed, I strongly believe counselors or regular individuals hoping to heal through yoga can utilize the book. Research, techniques for breathing, and yoga positions are included and detailed out.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book!
