Megan has just lost the love of her life. Killed protecting her home and her best friend, werewolf Luke was her love, her future, and her everything, but now he's gone.
Gripped in the throes of grief, and after a deliberately hateful statement by Merlin—yes, that Merlin—she's thrown herself into a dangerous pursuit. Hunting bounties across the Splinters of reality on the back of her red dragon, Goch.
When Merlin brings her a job from the dragons, she has no choice but to take it. The Golden Collar of Merlin has been stolen from them and they want it back. Now she must take the job because the stakes for her and Goch are high, even though it means being forced to work with Merlin and Goch's grandsire, an uppity pretentious creature himself.
However, how can you succeed when you hate your quest partner with the heat of a million blazing suns?
Enjoy this urban fantasy adventure with an older heroine, a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, dragon riding, and tons of action!
Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.
She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.
Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.
Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.
FMC was a miserable B…did not like her..we get it you’re in mourning for a year…everybody has dead people…get over it…has the nerve to judge others, when she is no better than them…what he said was not wrong she is just a human using other’s magic to get by, and she wasn’t a good mate for Luke, he had to cover her human, lack of magic, just this B did not want to hear this, and blames others. Prolly won’t read next due to FMC…
An entertaining story of a 40ish year old woman who operates in the current world with a lot of magical assistance. l found the MC quite whiny, but her dragon was cool.
This book was just a blast. I loved the witty characters and the story was just fun. Hunting down a magical item stolen from dragons. Highly recommend it to urban fantasy and paranormal fans. Especially paranormal womans fiction fans. The MC is a 40ish dragon rider, bounty hunter and hotel clerk.
What an epic prequel that read like a proper novel. Fast paced and lots of humour that had me chuckling loudly. Megan, a human in the magical world is a sideline bounty hunter and works for her bestie Brigid at her Secret Haven Inn on Earth. A dragon rider and the current owner of Excalibur. Tasked with the mission to find and return the Golden Collar with Merlin whom she detests, but they made a mean team. I can't believe I took so long to finally read it, but now I'm hooked and off to catch up on this series.
Pretty good introduction to the series. I know Megan is supposed to be in her 40s, but she seemed more like an impulsive 20-something to me. I like Merlin and look forward to reading more of the series.
I also listened to the audiobook while reading and I like the way the narrator did the voices for everyone. Although, I think her voice for Megan is part of why I felt more like she was in her 20s instead of the stated 40s. 🤷🏻♀️
What a great introduction to a series I am sure will be awesome. The author did a great job with the characters and the plot. I absolutely adore the narrator. The audible version is extremely entertaining. The story is full of surprises and features halflings, full Fae, dragons, plain ole humans and magical artifacts. All the perfect ingrediants for a series. The story is all about a golden collar that Merlin made . The collar gave the user the ability to control the wearer. It was an evil thing and Merlin wanted it back. It ended up with Megan & Merlin working together but the feud between them made things difficult. With the help of their dragons they hoped to complete their mission quickly.
A wonderful quick read, it slides in perfectly into the Splintered Magic series, however, this is a prequel and it's from Megan's POV, which is just awesome! Snarky, exuberant, joyful Megan isn't quite as joyful, exuberant as she was, snarky? Well that hasn't changed! A year has passed since Megan lost the love of her life, a year which has done nothing to soothe the crippling pain she still feels at his loss. She puts up as brave a front as she can, seeking purpose, a way to occupy herself so as not to dwell. And what better way than to be a bounty hunter! Yep, Megan and her awesome dragon Goch scour the realms collecting or "reclaiming" items for the Guild. That's when she's not manning the front desk of her bestie's B&B, when she's not traipsing around getting into all sorts of trouble....
I've always adored Megan, I loved how easy she is to like. Her snark and her banter, as well as her fierce protection of Brigid made her one of my favourite characters. I love her relationship with Goch! I love the warmth and beautiful "togetherness" Megan and Goch share and I adore her excitement when she flies. I feel ALL these emotions! Love it! What a cool addition to see Sorcha pop up! She's another character I love. And what a cool twist to introduce Mordred, so exciting! The action was so exciting too, I thought Merlin was a gonna for a sec when he was fighting Mordred and the dragon mage. The element of mystery is there too, I'm dying to know what Merlin is keeping back! There's so much opened up to be explored in subsequent books. The pacing was absolutely perfect! I found myself drawn into the story, I found myself at the end before I realised it and the ending is awesome! I also thoroughly enjoyed the humour, understated yet powerful enough to have me snorting on more than a few occasions and left me soooooo interested in what Mordred will do next, whether Sorcha will find her own place in her new role (squeeeee!!!!!) as well as WHY the dragons refer to Megan as a mage! I can feel a major revelation coming soon! I really love this world the author has tenderly built, I love the human/creatures/magical aspects, I just love it all! These characters are SO likeable, the banter exceptional, the "will they, won't they" get it on between Megan and Merlin, is like a jewel, shiny and sparkly, just waiting to be snatched up! Love love love it!
I'm astonished at how much this talented author managed to convey in a novella, it honestly feels like a full novel A light, easy, humourous, and action filled read, it just hits the right spot, although, it also hits that "I want more" spot and I'm really looking forward to more buffoonery from Goch, Megan and, of course, Merlin!
Welcome to the world of the “Splintered Realms”, part mundane, part Fae, and ALL adventure! Megan and her BFF Brigid live and work in Brigid’s magical B&B, the Secret Haven Inn, where guests from *every* walk of life can find a safe place to enjoy a relaxing vacation. Also, ix-nay on the eer-day unting-hay while certain shifters are in residence! Megan’s got a good thing going, she’s part of the magical community, she’s able to use her “borrowed magic” to kick butt and take names, and then, of course, there’s her dragon, Goch.
See, Megan’s a dragon rider, bounty hunter, AND front desk attendant. A girl can have hobbies, no? Much to Megan’s chagrin, Merlin (yes, THE Merlin) regularly shows up at the Inn, driving Megan absolutely bananas. Megan’s got a good reason to have a dragon-sized hate-on for the immortal enchanter, but I won’t spoil it for you. The Golden Collar (an invention of Merlin’s own making) has been stolen and Meg-and-Merl have been charged by the Alaskan Dragon Clan to retrieve it. Easy-peasy, right? Except that there are far more than just shifters and dragons that go “bump” in the night…
“Borrowed Magic” is the prequel novella to the “Splintered Realms” series by Jilleen Dolbeare; as Realms is a spinoff series to her widely popular “Splintered Magic” series starring Brigid Donovan and is set shortly after the conclusion of Magic. It’s fun, imaginative, funny, and a thoroughly good read. The MC is a full-grown, middle-aged rockstar of a woman (not some wispy 19-something who’s been wielding the forces of nature since birth) who’s finding her way after losing her forever love. She’s snarky, grumpy, and WILL decapitate you with Excalibur! Enjoy this read, I definitely did!
I received a free copy of this e-book set and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Megan and her fire red dragon, Goch, were happily flying home on a sunny day of bounty hunting. Brigid paid her well as a front desk clerk at her supernatural Inn, the Secret Haven, so Megan didn't really need to work another job. But, oh, the joy of the wind in her hair and the feeling of Goch's warmth underneath her. And, Megan was thrilled that she was building a little bit of savings for a rainy day.
Walking back into the Inn, the sight of Brigid sitting talking to Merlin choked Megan. The very Merlin she abhorred, who had said to her when her beloved Luke died, “You’ve never been good enough for Luke. A human will never be far enough up the evolutionary ladder to be a good mate for a werewolf. It’s your fault he’s dead.” She almost turned away in disgust.
As it turns out, Megan and Goch, as well as Merlin and his dragon, Darg, were summoned to repay a debt by retrieving the stolen Magic Collar. A very dangerous piece of magic, the Magic Collar enslaved the wearer of it until it was removed. It was stolen from the lair of the queen of the dragons, Aurora Golden Scales. And also quite disturbingly made by Merlin himself.
Author Jilleen Dolbeare is at her finest as her characters sneak in to the Irish Dragons lair. Much mayhem is in the air and, with the help of Brigid's Mother-in-law's Magic balls, Merlin and Megan are able to breach the Irish Queen's hoard.
What happens after that is for readers of the book to find out and reviewers to nod knowingly about. Wouldn't you like to be a reader and find out too?
Borrowed Magic is the prequel for the new Splintered Realms series. This is a spin off series from the Splintered Magic series (which I have not read yet but absolutely intend to since I own all of them!). This series starts Megan, a human who also is a dragon rider. She works at an inn for magicals for her best friend Brigid. She learns from Merlin (yes that Merlin!) that a dragon artifact has been stolen and she apparently owes the dragons a favor and they are calling it in. So, together with Merlin she must retrieve this collar. This prequel gives you enough of the back story from the previous series that you will understand everything going on. Megan is a no-nonsense person and she is forced to work with her "enemy" Merlin. Oh and there are obviously dragons! And magic! Since it's a prequel there is not too much to be said without giving a lot of it away, but it is definitely a quick and fun read! It's a great first look into a new series as well a small look into the previous! It is also quite humorous in parts when I giggled at some of Megan's thoughts. After reading this I can't wait for book one to come out and to be able to go back and start the Splintered Magic series as well!
Equal parts snarky and sad, Megan is forced to come to terms with her grief over the loss of her love, Luke. So what’s a girl to do except throw herself into her work and focus a large amount of that grieving energy into disliking Merlin for being a heartless bast…er…jerkface.
This quick snack of a story transitions us from the main Splintered series over to Megan’s own series. It’s quick and tasty, like a fun-size chocolate bar, whetting our appetite for the larger story to come. Most of the characters from Splintered are here (well, those who survived, anyway). Speaking of — if you haven’t finished the Splintered series, this story does contain spoilers, so keep that in mind before you start reading it.
If you love magic, dragons, BFFs who have your back, and starting over after a great loss, I recommend this story to you. And if you’re a fan of the legends of Arthur and his Round Table, I imagine you’ll enjoy it even more. I haven’t read a lot of Arthurian stories, so I’m not a good judge of that aspect of it. What I can tell you is you don’t need to know a lot about the guy to enjoy this story, as the author catches you up very well.
No, no no!! There is only one problem I ever have with Jilleen Dolbeare's books, and that's the fact they end, just when I seem to be the most engrossed in the story! They don't have cliff hanger endings, don't be afraid of that, but the story hits such a good point that I'm not ready for it to end.
Borrowed Magic was a great book. We take up Megan's story now, following the big loss in her life. She offsets the dullness of her job at the inn by spending her free time being a bounty hunter in the fae realms. Now, due to a favor promised, she and her dragon Goch must pair up with Merlin and his dragon to re-rescue the Golden Collar, which was stolen from the dragons. The use of magic and the character development are great, as usual, the flying scenes are exhilarating, and there is a lot of excitement and suspense.
Is it crazy to hope that Megan gets her HEA? Either in a slow-burn enemies to lovers with Merlin, or by forming a bounty hunter team and romantic pairing with Sorcha, from the Fae King's guards. However she accomplishes it, I'd just like to see her happy and in love (see, I think of her as a real, personal friend now!).
I came across Jilleen Dolbeare through the series she has cowritten with Heather Harris. This is my first book written solely by Jilleen.
I was very slightly lost at the beginning of this book as I hadn't read any others in this world before. It was a passing problem though and I was quickly able to figure out how this interesting world works.
This book is a novella and as such I was left wanting more. Given the length of the book I think Jilleen does well to introduce the main characters. Megan seems to have a complicated and difficult backstory. I also like that she is an older protagonist. Her dragon, Goch, is a teenager and I think their almost mother son dynamic is interesting as well.
Merlin has a lot of layers and I look forward to learning about more of them as this series progresses.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novella. I hope if you read it, you enjoy it also.
But the characters always miss the mark. Brigid was a bit dim, but at least she wasn’t totally obnoxious. Meagan on the other hand. Ugh she’s not strong, she’s not snarky, she’s just an immature *itch. And one who cannot accept her limitations and gets pissed if they’re brought up. I’m sorry but a magicless human, no matter how great a warrior, cannot compete with someone who’s trained hundreds of years and has magic. Or a freaking dragon. Also I’ve noticed something concerning for the past few books from this authors. Several of the raving reviews all look like they could have been written by the same person. They use the same phrases and have the same tone. While I find the world, magic, and stories fascinating, I’m not sure the less than stellar characters make up for it. I’ll continue reading for now but felt an honest review was needed.
This is the prequel of the Splintered Realms series by Jileen Dolbeare. Megan Findlay works at the Secret Haven Inn a bed and breakfast for the supernaturals hired by her best friend and inn owner Bridgid. Megan also works part-time for the Bounty Hunter’s Guild. Megan is a human with borrowed magic and travels with her red dragon Goch as a bounty hunter after the death of her werewolf lover Luke. She also possess the Excalibur Sheath for protection which can instantly heal anyone possessing it. Bridgid’s friend Merlin receives orders from Queen Aurora Golden Scales, Goch’s mother to return the Golden Collar to its rightful owner. Megan teams up with Merlin to save the dragons of Ireland from war throughout the world. I really enjoyed this fantastic paranormal urban fantasy novel.
This book basically covers what Megan has been doing since the end of the Splintered Magic series. She is still recovering from the death of Luke and still angry at Merlin. To keep her mind off of the past, when she isn’t working at the B&B, she and her dragon Goch are bounty hunters. When Merlin advises that due to past actions, he and Megan owe the dragons a favour. They must find a stolen necklace that can enslave the wearer. This leads to Ireland. This book has some action, magic, and humour. I found it a good way to get back into the characters from the previous series. It took me a few pages for everything to come back. Although the book can easily be read without knowledge of the other books it made things clearer.
Ever since I’ve read books by this author with another author, I’ve wanted to try one of hers. And what a better way to start that with this prequel novel. I was introduced to Megan, a human with friends that aren’t, and she has Excalibur and its sheath which gives her rapid healing powers. I quite enjoyed this glimpse of the author’s universe and being introduced to its characters, and I’m excited to dive into the next books. A well-written, interesting book that makes definitely want to read more. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
It was such fun to see Bridget and Mr Mittens again. I also enjoyed the boarding house being in this one. Bridget and Goch make such a wonderful team and teaming up with an old nemesis to return a favor for a dragon clan isn't quite what they had in mind.
I know my comments are showing I have read the previous books, but I promise this is a stand alone adventure with dragons and is a wonderful read.
I love Jilleen's books and they all stand out including the ones she writes with Heather G Harris. Please try this one out - am sure you will love it.
Best if this series Megan Gouch Merlin Dragon ridees
Oh I grew up reading all of Dragon rider if Owen books but Megan has her own Dragon they have secret adventures to help Megan coop with loss of her love luc. But Merlin tells her they have quest to find missing stolen golden collar yes that one. Along with some magic balls thanks to Dana , Irish dragons and new enemies or old enemies . Megan still venting her anger of loss of Luc at Merlin so he is end for some attitude on thus quest .
A mere human, Megan knows how to use her borrowed artifacts - and her near hatred of Merlin - to complete the mission of returning the Golden Collar to its rightful owner. Aside from riding a dragon, which seems to be a blast, Megan and Merlin join forces to save the dragons of Ireland from all-out war with their cousins across the world, but leave an important loophole inadvertantly open when it seemed to have snapped shut! A good story, one that I'd like to continue into the next book in this series.
I am hooked on this world. First let me say that in my usual style I am reading the series from this world out of order. It's inevitable for me. I see an ad for a great sounding book, download it and along the way realize my mistake. However, this series was stand alone entertaining. And if you read this prequel before the other books you will not be harmed in anyway. So go ahead and fall in love with Goch and I'll see you in court if you try to adopt him before I do.
This was fantastic. Megan still grieving for her loss embarks on a dangerous mission to recover the collar of merlin for the dragons. She owes them a favour and they have come a calling! Megan is such a great character, strong kick ass and takes no nonsense from nobody, especially merlin who she is having to work with. Well paced and action packed, this author takes us on one hell of a dragon ride and I for one cannot wait to read more.
Megan is cross with Merlin and when the dragons lose the collar again, she goes off with Goch and Merlin to help get it back. She still hates him, but she likes doing bounty work and Merlin promised they would help. They come across one of Merlin's old foes, Mordred and have to sneak in to an dragons lair to get the collar back, battle a dragon mage and retrieve the collar. Megan on finishing her little quest is determined to be in on the hunt to get Mordred afterwards.
Megan is a normal human. Yes, I said a normal human, but with the help of her friends, she has spells on the go along with an amulet for protection. Along with her friend Gogh, a teenage red dragon, they go on all sorts of adventures. The latest is with "The Merlin" can't help but think there are some sparks between these two later
I liked this story. Not sure I liked Merlin being a wise ass, but It didn't take away from the story. The characters were all interesting. There were halflings, full Fae, dragons, and plain ole humans with magical artifacts. The plot is easily followed and the premise is finding and returning the golden collar, that Merlin made, to the American dragons. I definitely recommend this short story.
Wonderful new series! Meagan and Goch spend their free time bounty hunting. Merlin comes to them with a job, to retrieve The Golden Collar for a clan of Dragons. This is an easy to read, interesting story with great characters and world building. Looking forward towards the rest of this unpredictable series.
Megan is still grieving the death of her love Luke, and has turned to bounty hunting with her dragon Goch as a way to keep busy. This series is a spin-off of the fun series, Splintered Magic, and it is good to get caught up with the original characters and have new adventures with Megan. I am excited to read more of Megan's stories.
Merlin is a jerk. Dragon riding is real! And why is it always two weeks? Between reading about Pern and dealing with Chaos as the front desk person of a B&B for non mortals, being human sucks. It comes down to who you know, and who you can borrow magic from.
After the adventures of Bridgid and Meagn in the Splintered series of books I wasn't sure a follow on could be as good. It is! I read the second book before this one so I knew the outcome, but it didn't detract from the enjoyment of this novel. I jusy love how a "middle aged mere human woman" comes to the aid of an ancient powerful magician.
Nice segue from Brigid’s Splintered Magic series to her besties
Great transition from one series to another. I read this right on the back of Splintered Destiny so was also mourning Luke but enjoyed the character development of both Megan and Merlin. Looking forward to the main series now.
