Gregory honestly thought joining up would make things easier, but obviously his expectations were too high. Because apparently he can’t even stop an assassination without informing his handler first. Seriously? Who has time for that sort of thing?
Unfortunately, after breaking a rule he didn’t even know existed, Gregory finds himself forced to pick someone as “backup.”
He doesn’t need anyone else, and he certainly wouldn’t have had help if he’d stayed with Deadlock. But Agent Lang won’t take no for an answer, and he soon finds himself picking the team that kidnapped him only a couple of years before.
Hopefully, they can figure out how to work together before they kill each other instead of the bad guys.
P.D. Atkerson is a homeschooled writer, living in Montana, who may or may not be a secret agent. She spends almost as much time in the worlds she creates as she does the real one. When she’s not reporting the stories of her agents, she’s learning different languages, or traveling to different worlds through the portals of books. She has a black belt in sarcasm and a master’s degree in useless facts.
4 stars. This book reminded me more of Exploit… Gregory stuck in a specific place with people who don’t like him, and he fights a lot. Neither of them are my favourite Deadlock books… I just get wearied by the constant aggression, and there’s no sympathetic/loveable characters except for the friend whose name escapes me. (I miss the kids!) I don’t know why Gregory’s books bother me more than Simon Lee’s or Lever’s? somehow they come across lighter or funnier??
Anyways, I did enjoy the story and of course I enjoyed seeing puzzle pieces click into place and getting to view Gregory’s backstory. Also I appreciate seeing him pray more and try to control himself. He really did some crazy brave hard things and changed his life so insanely around, and whenever I remember all that it really, really strikes me. It took him going through all this to make Simon Lee possible. <3
A Favourite Humorous Quote: Gregory set to work searching the desk while keeping an ear out for people coming and an eye out for any sensors that might be embedded in the desk itself. Some people may consider it paranoia, but a Deadlock considered it just being proactive against theft. Unfortunately for Hawkins, Gregory was just as paranoid about not getting caught. It’s amazing how motivating a death sentence could be.

I have been SO EXCITED for this book. Gregory meeting a certain team and particularly one certain soldier? YES! Finally!! And it didn't disappoint. I loved finally learning more about the members of Gregory's team, and watching him get to learn how to interact with them. Basically THIS is the book everyone has been waiting for since WW, whether they knew they were or not. The whole book was really quite full of surprises - particularly concerning that one certain character. I was NOT expecting Gregory to have been present at A Certain Important Event in That Person's Life - or Cody, actually. And speaking of Cody, I loved seeing him again! He and Gregory are soo much fun together, and I wish I could see more of them. Especially as adults... *wink wink* And I have to say, I love it that Cody and The Certain Person actually met. I feel like they each represent two separate parts of Gregory's life... and this was the transitioning point. So I appreciated how they overlapped, even just briefly. Knowing the kind of person Gregory becomes later, it makes it even more fun to see him slowly maturing and learning how to behave in a world so different from the world of Deadlock - and in this book, particularly learning how to work with others instead of tackling everything himself. Oh, and I really love the teamwork, even among the others. I never realised T-man would end up being such a great character! I think he's even my favourite out of the current team, and... that makes me less sad about RM, just saying. ;P And can we just talk about that ending?? And that certain character and the event that I SHOULD HAVE SEEN COMING A LOT SOONER? It only struck me halfway through this book how really that was a somewhat inevitable event. *sobs* But in all fairness to the author, if it had to happen, the time and place it happened... *sighs* I can live with it. Just purely for the fact that that event was a part of the series at all - I love it. But poor Gregory? And what a terrible place to leave him hanging! This book definitely has some sad moments, especially with The Certain Person and that whole thing and then The Other Certain Person and The Ending. But the humour balanced it out really well as always, and besides - THAT SCENE! Where they find a certain future-important person and... it was sooooo sweet with E and just ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I might have squealed. And I might have squealed again just thinking about it. All in all, I loved this book. Possibly my favourite DL book so far, though I can't be too sure since LDL was preeeetty good too... but here you can definitely see Gregory's life beginning to take shape, and I love that. So good!
I received this book free from the author but was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended Reading Order for the Simon Lee Universe books (SLU): Note: This is the order I've put together after reading and rereading almost all of these books, sometimes at once. While there are different opinions on which series should be read first, this is the order I personally feel is best for a first-time reader. It is NOT the chronological order - and I strongly recommend that a first-time reader does NOT read these books in chronological order. That's great for rereads, but the most will be got out of the SLU books by reading them loosely in the following order Phantom Thief Nicholas Bishop Gregory's Epilogue (blog short) Christmas Hostage Guardian Eagle Murphy Lawson Ghost Hunter Most Wanted Winnie Winfield Not Enough Rebel Mind Talking Turkey (blog short) Killian Young Domestic Conflict (Seize the Fight) They Call Her Ella Deadlock First Christmas Exploit Choices License Training Guilt My Name is Anastasia Night Crier (blog short) Only For a Moment (blog short) Christmas Bear (blog short) Everything Sick Leave (blog short) Water Boy (Classified Files) Школьник (blog short) Bank Robber (Classified Files) Blinded (blog short) Room Escapee (Classified Files) Dare (blog short) Wrong Number (blog short) Minor Detail Unwanted Services Off the Rails Smoke Screen Lost Time Web of Lies
This was another awesome, satisfying P.D. Atkerson book. Boy does Gregory have it hard...but it's nice seeing his story play out where we've only got brief glimpses before and getting a few more pieces of the puzzle. Caaaan't wait for the next one...
Trouble follows Gregory everywhere—including out of the country, where he's barely able to stop an assassination and get away with in time for dinner. He never thought that saving a life would end in him joining up, though. And really? Since when was anything he did fully his choice anyway?
But the same trouble that followed him to Singapore tagged along with him back to the states. It doesn't help that the team he chose to join hates his guts. Or that Uncle Sam's influence seems to reach even farther than Gregory thought.
Working as a team shouldn't be so hard . . . but with lives on the line, what choice does Gregory have?
