A lyrical and charming picture book about making the most of your one precious life, from multi-talented couple Scott and Mark Hoying.Born into a world of endless skies, natural wonders, and friends waiting to be found–a mayfly, with only a single day to live, flies high into the beauty of it all. But when he sees all the other mayflies pairing off, he wonders if he will have to spend his day alone. Could it be that he just needs to fly a little higher to meet his match? With lush illustrations and rhythmic storytelling, How Lucky Am I? encourages us all to appreciate the beauty of everyday life and those we share it with. The book will include a QR code to link readers to the original "How Lucky Am I?" song, written by the authors and performed by Scott Hoying.
A story about love and the circle of life, cleverly told by mayflies (which only live 24 hours). Back matter explains the mayfly life cycle and that the mayfly pair in the story are both male, like the authors. The digital illustrations are bright and colorful and the mayflies have adorably big eyes.
Yellow to orange end pages with dandelion seeds. Pretty cheesy storyline except for "'cause life is not to be wasted!" Illustrations look like cartoon stills. "The illustrations in this book were created using Photoshop."

I am going to say it just in case anyone else is afraid to....
This book is misleading and innapropriate. Because the animals are same- "s*x" ? No.
Because in the synopsis at the beginning, it uses the words "friend" and speaks of "pairing".
As I am trying to read my daughter a bedtime story, there is no mention of "he" or "she" and the book was confusing to us BOTH. * unironically *
I'm like "Who are they to one another?" My daughter goes " They are in a relationship. That's the girl & that's the boy." Now, I would have an issue with that even if it was a heteros*xual couple as well because I like to KNOW WHAT I AM READING TO MY CHILD.
So, I go back to the front because surely I read it said " FRIEND " !
We get to the end where the authors decide to tell us the history of the animals and go on to say " same-s*x" repeatedly instead of " gender".
Y'all are way to comfortable with just throwing around the word s*x or just anything to do with preference & children and it is WEIRD !
LANGUAGE MATTERS AND IS CRITICAL WHEN YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE IS CHILDREN
I myself read books that represent all kinds of relationships. Difference is : I know what I am getting into.
Now, I have to have a conversation with my daughter that I may not have otherwise needed to at this moment and I will. However, this is insane. Allow people to read about and address these topics with their children WHEN THEY WANT TO.
And one other thing : It is highly looking like there was malintent because if this was just a same s*x couple in animals just existing, why wait until the very end to tell us what's going on and how many other animals have same s*x couples? It actually could have been left to interpretation, never mentioning their "s*x" AT ALL.
