A single biology teacher who’s sworn off men can keep it friendly with a hot doctor…or can she?
It’s been six months since Tanith Kerrigan decided to embrace singlehood for one reason—to be nothing like the woman she calls Deandra. Also known as her mother. When Tanith badly sprains her ankle while trying to photograph birds in a…naughty…moment, magnetic Dr. Luke Caldwell offers his expertise and more. But having Dr. Temptation around isn’t the type of medicine she wants or needs in her life.
A single sports medicine doctor can control his crush on a captivating teacher…or can he?
For six months, Luke Caldwell has been fighting serious interest in a woman who doesn’t like him…as well as desiring more than big city life. But after Tanith injures her ankle, he seizes an opportunity to help her outside the examination room. Surely the fine high school teacher will warm up to him after spending time together? Before Luke can process what little armor Tanith lowers, his practice is hit with a colossal problem that could ruin everything he’s built.
As Tanith and Luke ease into the realm of possibilities, they find themselves up against individuals who force them to face what they want and need most.

Passion Under the Microscope by Christina Miles Smart is Seriously Sexy series #2. Romantic comedy. Can be read as a stand-alone but the couple from the first book are secondary characters in this story. STEM. Tanith Kerrigan is a high school biology teacher. When she tries to get a photo of a two birds, in a naughty moment for some levity in her next class, she trips instead and ends up with a sprained ankle. A friend calls Dr Luke Caldwell to help and he and Tanith are finally talking. He’s been interested in Tanith for months, but she didn’t seem to reciprocate. Now he’s helping to paint her house and their time together has them opening up and sharing pieces of their lives.
“Laughter is the best medicine” is a famous line that is used in this story. I agree with this wholeheartedly. And I personally love laughter in my reading and especially in a romance. Lots of grins and smiles and laughter in this story from both the hero and heroine. Luke is a self professed “quipster” and it’s kind of adorable. There is added depth as they get to know each other and daily life intrudes but their established banter and openness remains. Love, laughter and swooning characters. What’s not to love? 4.5
i hate rating books on the lower side but this one just didn't click for me. there were parts of the book that i really enjoyed and some parts that just didn't work.
pros: - golden retriever guy. love to see it - stem girly! can't go wrong with that - it was a very quick read which makes for a nice little cleanser - i liked the storyline with luke and his partner
cons: - i didn't really feel any chemistry between them. i didn't read the first book in the series, so that could be why. - i feel like there were too many things going on in such a short amount of time and yet at the same time it felt like there was no plot.
in general, i think this book just didn't have what i was looking for. however, it was a cute and quick romance for anyone looking!
A sports medicine doctor named Luke has been crushing on a high school biology teacher named Tanith for a long time. Finally, Luke captures Tanith's attention when she needs his help. Despite her initial reluctance, Tanith cannot deny that Luke is a sexy, witty, and charming doctor.
My Thoughts:
I enjoyed Tanith’s witty and stubborn character, especially her strong connection with her fellow teacher besties. I admired Tanith's passion for teaching biology, which extended beyond the classroom. She not only had a great sense of humor but also showed a genuine understanding of her students' needs and ensured they felt safe and comfortable in their learning environment.
I loved Luke. What's not to adore about a handsome, witty doctor? I have to say, Luke is one amazing guy. He always stands by his woman and supports her no matter what. That's what I love the most about his character.
The undeniable attraction between Tanith and Luke was truly captivating. Their chemistry was electric and impossible to miss. I couldn’t stop smiling as they interacted. I admired how Luke continued to make himself readily available to Tanith during her time of need, even though she wasn't quite sure if she was ready for something more than friendship.
I found Luke and Tanith's story to be both sweet and inspirational, but I did feel that the epilogue was a bit rushed. Additionally, I was hoping for more closure on Tanith's relationship with her mother. I was hoping they would somehow resolve things. More so, I was expecting Taniths mom to have some growth as a mother and fix things between the two of them. I felt like Taniths mother's story was mysterious and there was a lot unsaid.
This book is for you if you like: Golden Retriever MMC, Doctor MMC, Biology Teacher FMC, He falls first, Small Town Romance and low spice.
Let's say that Tanith carried this entire book on her shoulders because everything about her ENCHANTED ME! Sure, Luke also enchanted me, but Tanith takes it all because she didn't back down from her mother (that title is too big for her).
I love reading about strong protagonists who don't let anyone push them around. The relationship between these two was good, although I did feel they were more like friends than anything else. But I won't deny that when they finally get together, everything falls into place perfectly. Isn't Luke beautiful with her? How he helps and supports her in everything? Oh, I loved it. And yes, there's a lot of Tanith, but I also have to say that Luke, as the main character, impressed me. He's a doctor who cares about his employees and patients, and when something threatens everything, I'm glad he took the right side.
A story that you can read quickly, captivating, with strong characters that make you fall in love.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publishers, for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Almost six months into swearing off men, Tanith sprains her ankle halfway through her home renovation project. Enter Luke, brother of her best friends boyfriend. Sports doctor. Handy man. And quite possibly the only man who might get her to change her mind. Combine that with her mother and Luke's douche of a business partner, and their lives go for tail spin.
I desperately wanted to love this book. From the minute I saw it, I was excited to read something that could fit into the same category as Ali Hazelwoods stem romances. Unfortunately, this didn't deliver. The idea of the story was so great, and I was genuinely interested in what was going to happen next. However, there were stylistic irritations to the book that turned the book into a difficulty to read. This was a fast-paced and easy read and would be perfect for anyone looking for something easy to be a pallet cleanser.
There were two main issues that I had with this book. The biggest one was the friendships between men and women. In this book, there is a scene between two good friends in front of the FMC that is far more than platonic. This wouldn't have been issue for me if it weren't for the fact that one of the friends involved was the MMC who had just been talking about how long he'd wanted to date the FMC.This, combined with the way the author wrote about the women {especially from the mans point of view}, made this book difficult to read. There was one sex scene. It was, however, rushed and didn't feel like it added much substance to the actual book.
I thought the characters really were great, with Luke and Tanith having a lot of chemistry. The author also covered several heavy topics but did so with a gentleness and grace that is often missing in romance books. If someone is looking for a book that is quick, easy, and not too smutty, then this is definitely the kind of book that they should be going for.
I really enjoyed this story. At only 185 pages it’s more of a novella, so is a quick read!
I didn’t read book #1 in the series but had high hopes given my affection for Ali Hazelwood books 💕
Pros: - MC is a woman in STEM. You love to see it! - Quick, enjoyable read - WMC and MMC had realistic jobs (teacher and doctor). It’s not overly complicated and found this refreshing - Tanith and Luke’s banter was great imo - Luke and Dr Vic’s relationship was cute once we were clear on their relationship - Tanith’s friends as her support system - Slow burn with spice 🌶️ I wasn’t expecting in the latter half of the book
Con’s: - Felt like we jumped into the story super quickly and didn’t get properly introduced to the characters (this could also be because I didn’t read #1 in the series) - Luke’s business partner side plot I don’t think added much value to the story. Super heavy topic that I feel was kind of glossed over and we never found out the final outcome? - Wish as readers we would have found out about Luke and Dr Vic’s relationship (or non relationship) sooner as readers and then Tanith figure it out later
Overall super easy, light, and enjoyable read. Would recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for the digital ARC of this title.
Tanith is a sassy high school biology teacher. After a series of low-stakes, casual relationships, she has sworn off men. She doesn't even bat an eye when Reece Caldwell's younger brother, Luke, shows some interest in her. Luke happens to be a sports medicine doctor and helps Tanith after a sprained ankle. But she still won't budge. Unless......
I love this series. I really enjoyed Off-the-Charts Chemistry which was the first book in the series. I couldn't wait to pick up the newest installment. I like Christine's writing style and her stories. The characters are so relatable and lovable. When book 3 comes out, I'll be first in line.
Tanith and Luke are adorable. Tanith has some self healing to do, not only her sprained ankle, but her view of herself. She’s healing from a mother who put the dependency of men above her and therefore has shut the door to romance. Luke was hurt by his first love. These two work so well together and I loved the triumph they accomplished. The banter and chemistry is great!
Received as an ARC in return for my honest review.
🧬 Biology teacher FMC 🔬 Golden retriever Dr MMC 🧬 Friends to lovers 🔬 Reverse grumpy x sunshine 🧬 He falls first 🔬 Small town
I didn’t realise this was the second book in the series and I think if I’d have read the first one it may have changed my overall rating of this one. Overall I thought it was ok and had real potential but sadly fell short in some aspects.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved Luke as a MMC, he was great and such a well thought out character. Tanith on the other hand really irritated me at moments, she didn’t feel like a fully hashed out character to me and could have done with a lot more development throughout to make her more likeable and relatable.
I wish this wasn’t as rushed at the end as it felt, it really seemed like a sprint to the finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an eARC copy of the story.
The synopsis peaked my interest but I thought I was going to read some funny lighthearted rom-com… Well, I absolutely did not expect to find a romance with tons of emotional depth, heavy topics and addicting characters.
I quickly realized that this was going to be good and I wasn’t wrong because I couldn’t stop reading. Tanith and Luke were such incredible main characters. I really liked their personalities and the communication they had with one another. Their own individual struggles were so heartwrenching to read about and the turns always took me by surprise. I really liked how vulnerable they were able to be together and how they grew from that.
The plot not being just the romance played in favor of the story. It was a very good way to show the characters as more complex people and to complete their character arcs. The pacing of the story was quit but not too quick to give me whiplash. The rest of the cast was sooo heartwarming it made me long for a group of friends like that. And the villains were very villan-y but still maintaining an essence of reality to them.
The only thing that annoy about the story was the writing, it was good but it could’ve been improved with a little bit more editing. There were some weirdly constructed phrases that made me reread the paragraphs multiple times. I can pass a fantasy novel being confusing but I think it’s something that shouldn’t happen in a romance story. Also, some pieces of information were repeated several times, which got repetitive real fast. I think she could’ve made some things less obvious and everything would’ve been fine. It wasn’t something that made me stop reading, I still really enjoyed the book, but it knocked down the rating for me.
I will still be reading the previous book on the series and I’ll keep an eye out for the author’s future works.

🤷🏾♀️What To Expect: Women/Adult Fic, Contemporary Romance, small town, STEMinist, sports
⚠️ Look Out For: parental neglect &abandonment, sexual harassment, injured h (sprained ankle)
Summary: Tanith has swore off men and stuck to it for the last six months. She is a high school Biology teacher responsible for teaching about reproduction. She goes bird watching to photograph a "visual aid" for her students, but falls and badly sprains her ankle. Dr. Luke Caldwell is a doctor of sports medicine and he's Reece's younger brother, so he wanted to help. Tanith is reluctant to allow him in her life but as they get to know and confide in each other, they fall for each other.
The characters: 🚺 FMC: Tanith Kerrigan- bio teacher @ Vista high school. Swore off men for awhile until she's treated by Luke. He helps her around her house- moving furniture and painting while she's injured. Doesn't want to be like her mother Deandra who needed men to take care of her. Tanith has her own job, house, etc.
🚹 MMC: Dr. Luke Caldwell-30, was a football player in college, but didn't pursue it. His college girlfriend broke up with him when he stopped playing football. Co-owns practice for seven years with Dr. Sean Trevor who he met @ a medical conference.
Stacey: Tanith's BFF, Reece's gf & a Chemistry teacher @ Vista
Morgan McCann: 33, Tanith's BFF
Gia Valentine: Tanith's BFF, went through bad divorce
Reece: Luke's older brother, the high school football coach @Vista
Deandra/DKLMSS: Tanith's mother who neglected and abandoned her. She's been married and divorced four times, using men to take care of her. She criticizes Tanith's lifestyle and Deandra only wears expensive things.
Dr. Victoria Trimble: Luke's friend and confidante. They dated briefly, and she has her own PCP office. Probably the MVP character for me!
🤔My Thoughts: I enjoyed this installment and I recommend reading book #1 first for the background and world building. I understood Tanith's issues with men and why she kept things casual. It was hard seeing her mother with a revolving door of men. She wanted to make sure she didn't have to depend on anyone in life. Her tough exterior softened to Luke. I loved the game they played to get to know each other and talk about their problems. Luke handled his issues with Sean quickly, but I wanted him to address how to keep it from happening again. Tanith came through for him with the lawyer help and she was pretty chill about the whole thing. Overall this was a light-hearted, small town, contemporary romance. I will definitely read book # 3 Psychology with Mr. Mistletoe. Christmas romance?
Passion Under The Microscope is the second book in Miles' Smart is Seriously Sexy series. This cute contemporary romance features Tanith Kerrigan and Dr. Luke Caldwell.
Tanith is the biology teacher at Brigid's Vista High School. She's also an avid hiker. While out one day, she happened to spot two Lark Bunting's "getting it on" in a tree. She tried to snap a photo, hoping to use it as an icebreaker for the upcoming reproductive module, however she took a wrong step, fell down a small hill and ended up twisting her ankle. While she managed to get home, and elevate her foot, it was getting worse by the minute. She's frustrated both at her inability to stand, but also not being able to paint her living and dining rooms, which she had already prepped and was ready to go. Her friend and coworker, Morgan McCann, reached out to Coach Caldwell's younger brother, Luke. He comes running and whisks Tanith away to the neighbouring town to have her ankle x-rayed and ensure it isn't anything worse.
Tanith, and some of her fellow teachers decided to avoid men, each for different reasons. Tanith's reasons are revealed in this book. Luke embraced bachelorhood at the age of twenty, when he walked away from football and started down his current path to sports medicine. There's something about Tanith though that appeals to Luke, in more than the standard way. Since having met her, he has wanted to get to know her. Her sprained ankle presented the perfect opportunity. In addition to tending to her injury, he volunteers his services to paint her living and dining rooms for her. She begrudgingly accepts. The two end up spending some time together which thrills Luke. He is keen to break down her walls and learn more about this mysterious, smart and beautiful woman. Tanith wasn't interested in opening up, but Luke is funny and entertaining, in addition to being smart and sexy. Both characters learn to open up and share with the other, growing closer, until the chemistry cannot be denied.
In reading this book I learned that Lark Buntings are Colorado's state bird, and that Tanith is the name of the Phoenician goddess of love, fertility, the moon, and the stars.
My favourite line was: "But facing reality happened to be one reason tomorrows existed." Loved that!
I had fun reading this lighthearted book and would definitely recomment checking it out for an easy read with a guaranteed HEA. I love reading books with women in STEM and am looking forward to the next book, Psychology With Mr. Misteltoe, where Morgan finds love.
Thank you to the author Christine Miles and Meg from Literary Inspiration for this ARC copy. ————— Tanith has sworn off men. Tanith, a high school biology teacher, refuses to be like her mother and has sworn off men because of that. Which is unfortunate that she meets Dr. Luke soon after. Tanith tries to ignore Luke and not get attached to the hot sports medicine doctor, but when she sprains her ankle and her friend calls Dr. Luke for help Tanith has no choice but to interact with him. Quickly she feels her walls coming doing with the help of his charm but her mother showing up in town threatens all the peace that Tanith has created in this small town she calls home.
Dr. Luke has not had a serious relationship in years after getting his heart broken. While his friends and family see him as a player with women coming in and out of his life, Luke argues that he has just been focusing on his sports medicine practice. But when he meets Tanith through his brother’s girlfriend at a Halloween party he knows he wants to get to know her better. The only problem is Tanith seems to not like him. After Luke is called to help Tanith with a sprained ankle he decides to try to help her even more and paint her living room since she is now unable to due to her injury. Now getting some alone time with her, Luke can see Tanith’s walls start to fall causing him to fall for her more. But trouble back in Denver at his medical practice threatens to destroy everything he’s worked so hard for.
Passion Under The Microscope is a fun, quick and easy romance read. I enjoyed the story line of Luke’s conflict with his partner at his sports medicine practice. The book was overall a good book and I enjoyed the read but I felt like Tanith’s character could have used a little more development in the story as I felt she seemed flat and dull at times against Luke’s character. I enjoyed the banter in Luke and Tabatha’s relationship but felt they lacked some chemistry, but I fell like Tabatha not feeling as well rounded of a character played into that. I don’t feel that you needed to read the first book in this series to be able to read this one, although you may pick up on a few references to the past book easier if you had read that before.
I think that this was a cute and relatively quick read. One thing that I did wish that I knew before reading the book was that it's the second book in the series. That's the main reason why I ended up giving it 4 stars because it just ended up feeling like I was missing a piece of the puzzle. While it's more than likely not necessary to read the first book in this series, I feel like it is important to be able understand the dynamic between Tanith and Luke, as well as more of their characters overall. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but wish it was a bit longer. and less repetitive (if I had to read any version of "the lady" one more time I was about to rip out my hair).
I liked the external conflicts that the two characters were having. I liked how instead of letting it take over themselves, they found ways that they could help each other out and still find time to be with each other. But I do feel like the conflicts weren't actually resolved and the ending was a bit rushed.
I especially enjoyed the little moments of them opening up to each other. The ping pong ball game was cute and I wish we had similar moments like it before they really ended up with each other. Like yeah, they had moments of opening up, but I liked how it was just them in their own little world and just having fun with it.nWith my wish of this book being a bit longer, I wanted to see more of what they were like over the past few months of being acquainted with each other. I think it would have made the chemistry a bit more organic, at least on Tanith's end. Her falling for him felt a bit rushed, even though she had mentioned her mutual attraction to him a few times.
Thank you NetGalley and Sealed with a Swoon Books for providing me an arc copy of the book in return for my honest review.
Thank you so so much to the author and Bound By Mischief for sharing an ARC of this book with me!!!
“For the first time in her adult life, Tanith Kerrigan needed serious help.”
“His dream woman who happened to be immune to him; a much-needed reminder that caused him to push the inappropriate thoughts to the back of his mind.”
“Do you ever feel like your life is under a microscope living in this town?”
As it happens, after reading book one (Off the Charts Chemistry) I absolutely fell head over heels in love with this series. And when the opportunity to read book two came up … you better believe I ran for it!! And I was so so right!!! There’s something so amazingly good about a small town, spicy but not too much, forced proximity romance between a doc from the big city and a small town biology teacher!!! And Luke and Tanith … they did well more than deliver !!! This book was exactly what I was expecting and then some and I’m so happy to say I had the best time reading it!! And thinking it all starts with a sprained ankle!!! What an adventure !!! And if you were to ask me, what’s my favourite book about this series … there is absolutely no third act break up !!!! It’s so magical !!! I love the fact that the characters get their time to know one another fall in love and civilly talk about their issues and insecurities !!!! Sounds like fiction but it is of course so … so so happy about it!!!
“You taste as good as Ive been imagining for months.”
“Think of your body as a gift.” She glanced at Maya who had asked the original question. “Gifts are wonderful, unique, and something we give to people we love, or at least greatly respect and admire, on special occasions.” She leaned forward. “And think about this. Very few people in the world go around giving gifts to just anyone at all times, right?”
So it's been a while since I read Off The Charts Chemistry (the first book in the series), but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this a whole lot more. I'm a huge fan of shorter novels and novellas, and I'm in love with the execution of this one. It's less than 300 pages and still there's space for a well thought out plotline, separate from the romance.
Both the MCs have some great interactions that I absolutely loved. Tanith is a high school teacher, so her manner with her students is such a delight, and Luke is a sports medicine doctor, with a stubborn teenage patient (the only patient we actually see). I think it's so important to portray characters outside of the romance, because the rest of their life doesn't stop right there, and I think this book does it beautifully. All the insecurities made complete sense and he character arcs were very compelling.
I love how they both have their own stories and qualities that they bring to their relationship that makes it so wholesome. It's amazing to see their worlds alter as they make space for each other and see the subtle changes in their personalities. Tanith and Luke fit together so well, and their bond makes my heart melt :)
While this is a very easy read, there are some difficult topics addressed in this story (and done well IMO), and I've put them below. I can't promise that you'd love this, but I surely recommend it, coz it was what I needed.
TW- mentions of sexual harassment, parental abandonment.
PS: I didn't like that Tanith kept referring to her mom as DKLMSS (I took so long to understand what that meant and yes, it's her initials after being married to 4 men). Also, Luke calling Tanith 'lady' over and over again was annoying, but I'm gonna let it slide.
Cute story with the funniest excuse for a sprained ankle I've ever heard!
Tanith Kerrigan was raised by a woman who never wanted to be a mother. She had cut off ties with her and never referred to her as mother, but only by her name, Deandra. She had recently had someone make comments to her about her becoming somewhat like her mother. So, she's pulled back from dating. She's the biology teacher at Brigid’s Vista High School. While trying to take pictures of birds for her next biology subject, she lost her balance, fell, and badly sprained her ankle. Enter Dr. Luke Caldwell...
Dr. Luke Caldwell is a single sports medicine doctor. His brother, Reece, is the head football coach at the same school as Tanith. Luke's been intrigued by her for the last six months. But it's obvious that she's not interested in him at all, in fact, she seems to hate him. However, spending time together and helping with her recovery might help, couldn't it?
One thing that no one really knows about Luke is that, unlike his father and brother, he never cared that much for football. When his coach told him he'd never be good enough to go pro, he walked away from playing sports to sports medicine. The girl he thought he loved turned her back on him and left him when he was twenty. His family also doesn't know that he no longer cares to live in Denver, nor does he date as much as they assume he does. After spending time at Reece's, he's drawn to the Brigid’s Vista area.
She never really wanted a man in her life. He certainly wasn't looking for love... Call it fate...
I received a free copy of this book from the author via Booksprout. I am voluntarily leaving this review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a solid three stars for me. I enjoyed the characters, especially the representation of women in STEM. The FMC is a biology teacher and the MMC is a sports medicine doctor. It did bother me a little that the FMC mourns how she wanted to be a doctor, but couldn't afford it, as it felt almost like teaching as a profession was being written off, but I could just be internalizing emotions as a teacher myself.
The book, I felt, did not work effectively as a standalone. I had not read book one, but you may want to prior to picking up this title. The book threw you into an established world, and while it attempted to go back and explain locations and character histories, things may have been more clear from the beginning with the reading and history from book number one.
The plot, I felt was also very busy. There were major issues happening in multiple cities, with multiple characters, and the resolutions felt a little rushed with some final big decisions by the characters. The author handled the heavy topics and emotions well, clearly painting a picture of frustration and sadness felt by the main characters as related to the main conflicts.
The tropes in this book were cute and drew me to the book. They included: * STEM Romance * He falls first * Reverse grumpy/sunshine
There was quick build up of sexual tension between the two characters leading to one scene of intimacy, but it wasn't super explicit and was fairly fast, making it appropriate for someone who prefers low spice (but maybe not closed door) romances.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting, quick read. The main characters were sweet, and I enjoyed following their romance.
First, as always, a huge thank you to NetGalley and Christine Miles for providing a free ebook to read and share my thoughts with other readers!
This book was overall such a pleasant surprise! I will admit after reading a streak of misses in the romance category my bar has been pretty low. I loved the synopsis the minute I read it, as a fellow high school teacher, I love to see the representation! Tanith is a great FMC. She is confident, self-sufficient and sassy as hell which was amazing. Luke, the MMC, was a a bit less dynamic of a character for me personally, but his overall cinnamon roll, golden retriever energy made up for it. The two of them had such sizzling chemistry but when the time came to let the connection burn, it just fell so flat. The sex scene (singular) just felt so rushed, honestly, it would have been better to leave it as a fade-to-black or closed door to preserve the chemistry.
The plot was interesting and kept me hooked throughout. Particularly, the rather heavy topics that were really respectfully integrated into the characters. This was so clearly done with love and care and it came through really beautifully. Tanith's relationship with Deandra was really well written and represented how difficult it is to make peace with an estranged, difficult and complex relationship with a parent.
I would recommend this book for those looking for a sweet, quick romance as a palette cleanser. It was just enough of everything I enjoy. If you are like me and want the following, check this one out! 👩🏻🏫 Women in STEM/Education 🥵Sizzling banter 🍭Sweet not spicy (no smut) 🔥Slow burn 🥐Cinnamon roll MMC 🩵He falls first 🏡Small town romance
Passion Under the Microscope is a standalone romance by Christine Miles and is the second book of the series Smart is Seriously Sexy.
Tanith Kerrigan is a high school science teacher in a small town. She knows Dr Luke Caldwell, who specialises in sports medicine, because Luke's brother is with Tanith's best friend. However, Tanith has made it clear to everything that she does not like Luke, to a point where it seemed irrational. Yet, when Tanith injures her foot, one of her friend's calls Luke, because there is no other doctor around and this is his expertise. The injury brings them together, and Luke begins to find out more about the prickly high school teacher, and Tanith finds herself learning that it is ok to ask for help.
I really enjoyed the story and the character development of both Tanith and Luke. Luke has to undergo a serious rethink of a person that he's respected professionally and considered his friend. It gave him a lot of conflict personally, but also threatens his professional life. Tanith on the other hand has demons that comes from her childhood and her mother. This was the one thing that did frustrate me a bit. I get that her mother was narcissistic and her mother's bad relationship record has negatively affected Tanith in the extreme, but I felt at times that Tanith was stubbornly anti love and anti relationship. Yet in saying that, she thankfully wasn't a lost cause and Luke was just the guy to stick around and show Tanith that good things come from love.

Passion Under the Microscope is the second book in Christine Miles’ Smart is Seriously Sexy Series. It’s a modern romance with lots of laughs, chemistry, and small-town vibes. The main characters are a biology teacher named Tanith Kerrigan and a sports doctor named Dr. Luke Caldwell. After Tanith hurts her ankle, Luke steps in to help, and things take an interesting turn. As they deal with their feelings and life’s ups and downs, the story gets more and more intriguing.
Tanith Kerrigan is a total badass chick with realistic imperfections. We see her character development play out really well in the story. Dr. Luke Caldwell is a total dreamboat who’s charming yet vulnerable. His inner battles make him all the more interesting.
Miles nails it with the perfect mix of humor and love. The banter is on point, and the story keeps you hooked. It’s got all the RomCom vibes that make it a fun read.
Tanith and Luke’s drama adds depth. The setting really highlights how important connections are. They both start to open up and trust each other more. The conversations between them show off their personalities and make the story more interesting. Miles keeps things light with his funny jokes.
Passion Under the Microscope is a super cute romance that will totally make you feel warm and fuzzy. It’s all about love, personal growth, and life in a small town. Sure, it has some familiar elements, but the way it’s written keeps you hooked and entertained.
If you’re into modern romance and love some good banter, slow build-up romance, and deep characters, you should totally check out this book called Passion Under the Microscope. It’s a feel-good read that you won’t regret!
I would recommend this book if you enjoy: - Teacher x Doctor trope - Found family - Slow burn - Dislike-to-lovers - Short but sweet romances - On page non-explicit spicy scenes
This book starts off with the FMC Tanith after spraining her ankle trying to take a picture of birds going at it, a few days before she has to teach sex-ed to biology class. Her friend Stacey was with her so they called Dr Luke Caldwell, Stacey's boyfriend Reece's younger brother, who Tanith doesn't particularly like but reluctantly lets him bring her to get it looked at the small practice he shares with one of his long time friends.
I haven't read the first book in this series that follows Stacey, a high school chemistry teacher and Reece, a former football player turned coach. I think that this book is written, assuming you read the previous despite referencing it because I didn't feel hugely connected to the world or the characters throughout.
I enjoyed the vibes of the story but there wasn't much depth overall as there wasn't an overarching plot going on except the two MC's ridding themselves of people they no longer wanted to associate with.
The group of friends seem like a cool bunch and them being teachers of various subjects was a nice element.
Apart from the vibes and the romance that was written nicely, I didn't feel much while reading it so I probably wouldn't read it again. I'd recommend it though if someone was looking for a short but sweet teacher x doctor romance with found family.

"Passion Under the Microscope" by Christine Miles is an engaging exploration of the interplay between science and human emotion, focusing particularly on how passion drives both personal ambitions and professional pursuits in the field of science. Miles masterfully intertwines real-life scientific discoveries with the personal stories of the researchers behind them, revealing the profound dedication and fervor that fuel their life's work.
The book excels in making complex scientific concepts accessible and relatable, enriched by vivid storytelling that captures the reader's imagination. Miles doesn't just stay on the surface but delves deep into the psyche of her subjects, examining how their passionate endeavors in the lab translate to broader implications in their lives and the world at large.
One of the book's strengths is its ability to humanize science, presenting it not just as a series of experiments and results, but as a deeply emotional and often tumultuous journey. The narrative is both inspiring and cautionary, reflecting on the costs and rewards of such intense dedication.
Overall, "Passion Under the Microscope" offers a unique lens on the often unseen emotional landscape of the scientific world, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the personal dynamics that drive innovation and discovery. Whether you're a scientist, a student of human nature, or simply a lover of well-told tales of personal achievement and challenge, this book is sure to resonate and inspire.

Tanith Kerrigan is a biology teacher at the local high school. She will do anything to grab her students' attention and break the tension that is inevitable at the start of the reproductive unit she is starting on Monday, including taking a photo of two birds in a private moment. Said photo leads to a sprained ankle, which the handsome Dr. Luke Caldwell is happy to take a look at on a Saturday morning.
As a math teacher myself, I loved Tanith and her friends. The author did a fantastic job depicting the life of a teacher - grading on the weekends, constantly thinking about ways to engage your students, and leaning on your teacher friends to get through the hard days. Tanith, Stacey, Gia and Morgan truly reminded me of my own friend group of teachers.
Read this book if you love: -Small town romance -Sworn off men (but then she meets the MMC and all bets are off!) -He takes care of her when she is injured
If you are looking for a lighthearted romance, this book is not that, in my opinion. There are definitely some delightful moments, but the main characters spend a significant portion of the book processing life challenges together (see TW below)
TW: absentee parent, workplace sexual harassment is referenced
Note: Passion Under the Microscope is Book #2 in the Smart is Seriously Sexy series, but you can read it as a stand alone title (which I did, and I was totally fine!)
A big thank you to Netgalley and Sealed with a Swoon for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Passion Under the Microscope is a story of self-discovery, navigating adversity and two really hot science nerds finding each other.
Tanith Kerrigan is a high school biology teacher who meets her unfortunate demise (sprained ankle) trying to catch two birds... uh... doing it (it was the Colorado state bird okay!!! Very important!!!). In comes Dr. Luke Caldwell to sweep her off her feet (and to get an x-ray) in this fun, witty romp where two people face adversity, fall in love and grow. In a shocking turn of events what starts as Dr. Luke supporting Tanith leads to a role reversal as he ends up in a situation that threatens his livelihood.
This book is a lot of fun and I'm always here for women in STEM (very much an Ali Hazelwood Penny Reid stan here). I really enjoyed the banter between the two MCs and the expanded community of friends that they share. I also really loved seeing representation of complicated family dynamics as demonstrated by Tanith's with her mother Deandra.
I honestly don't know why this book ended up so low for me because, in theory, it ticked every one of my boxes for a good time. Women in STEM? Golden retriever MMC? Banter??!? What isn't there to love? This definitely falls into "It's not you, it's me" because I just wasn't connecting to the story or characters fully. I still recommend everyone give this book a try when it drops because, even though it wasn't a 4 or 5 star for me, I definitely think it's a good, enjoyable book that's worthy of your attention.
Tanith is off men. That is, until she sprains her ankle trying to take a photo of fornication birds to break the ice with the teens she's about to teach a reproduction unit to. Fortunately, sports doctor Luke Caldwell is just a phone call away, and is more than happy to help out.
The last book I read was a tough read, so I wanted something light-hearted and fun next. This ticked those boxes. This was a fun, easy to read romance. I liked both main characters in this book. They both had some personal stuff to deal with as the story progressed - Tanith with her mother, and Luke with his job - but they bolstered and supported each other, which contributed to their feelings for each other. I thought the falling for each other felt a little rushed on Tanith's part, but for the most part it felt organic, with Luke having been harbouring a crush for quite some time. One thing that I did struggle with was the constant referral to Tanith as "the lady". It became overused very quickly and I found it unnecessary. The phrase just irritated me. I think, because Luke is a country music fan, it was supposed to imitate the vernacular there. But it just started to grate and the third or fourth time. This was a cute, fun romance featuring S.T.E.M characters, a biology teacher and a doctor. It was easy to read, and ticked all the boxes for a quick lighthearted read.
This is book two in The Smart is Seriously Sexy series and it is Tanith and Luke’s story. Tanith is a biology teacher and while trying to take a photo birds in a compromising position which she wanted for her next class she ended up falling and injuring her ankle so she needed some help and that is when Luke steps in. Luke has been interested in Tanith for a while without any success so when she needs help he is happy to give her what she needs and also sees it as a way to spend some time with her to see where it goes between them. Tanith has big trust issues when it comes to men and relationships especially after her last disaster so she swears off men completely especially as her mother who can’t seem to be without them and didn’t care about Tanith and also neglected her throughout her life which ended up with Tanith building walls around her that is so high that it will take a very special person to be able to break them down and Luke hopes that it is him because he wants a relationship with Tanith but he knows that he will have to be patient if he is too ever stand a chance of a future with her. I really enjoyed reading this book and it had great characters along with laughter and was a short read which is just what you need sometimes and I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.
Passion Under the Microscope is Book 2 of the Smart is Seriously Sexy Series. It's a spicy,chick-lit, reverse grumpy-sunshine, slow-burn, midlife, and romantic comedy. Tanith is a 35 year old smart, sassy, and independent high school biology teacher. Luke is a hunky sports medicine doctor whose brother thinks he's a bit of a playboy. He has been crushing on Tanith for a few months but thinks she is not interested in her. She has been jaded on relationships due to the poor example she had for a mother growing up. But when she sprains her ankle trying to get a picture of fornicating birds, Luke is only too happy to swoop in and try to take care of her. As the two grow closer over the next few weeks, both realize that the other has been misunderstood and attraction blooms. Will Tanith let love in? When both have challenges, they support each other and realize that maybe what they have is pretty special. I really loved this story. It was such an unexpected surprise. I am totally in love with Luke and how he really cared for Tanith and his practice. I also loved how feisty Tanith was. She was so strong dealing with her mother. This was my first book by this author. Now I need to read the first one and look forward to the third one!!.

Biology teacher, Tanith just sprained her ankle thus delaying her house painting project. Good thing Dr. Luke Caldwell just volunteered to help her with the ankle and the painting. How unfortunate that Tanith just sworn off men for some reason...
One thing that caught me off guard with this book is the ages of the characters (this is a good thing). It's so amazing to me that Romance characters are not stuck in their 20's. And with that comes more realistically serious adult problems, which is so refreshing to read about and I am all for it.
If you want heart wrenching drama, this is not it (but there is a bit of drama) . This book is friends to lovers budding romance. The romance was subtle, lovely, and funny. I liked how the characters just eventually realized their feelings. This also felt like character growth and resolving problems together, which is too cute.
This was such an enjoyable read even though I've never read the first book of the series. Even without knowing the previous book, I love that the other characters that the main character keeps mentioning not only shows up but also solidifies their friendships.
Great book with amazing smart women and equally lovely men.
