After teaching the four friendship skills in Books 1, What Is a Friend and How Do I Possibly Make One? and one How-to skill in the book How to Run My Play Date, this book targets two more important friendship skills to strengthen a friendship, including reading social cues and not acting like a police officer or tattletale. Young readers will take the perspective of the main character and learn these skills step by step following the story. In the end, social situations are provided for practice to reinforce the skills taught. This book brings two more friendship marbles for young readers to collect for their "friendship jar"!The author has uniquely applied behavior science to children’s literature by using behavioral technologies and procedures such as Behavior Skills Training (BST) through instructions, modelling, rehearsal, and feedback. This book was developed together with researchers, school teachers, early childhood educators, behaviour analysts, speech-language pathologists, many parents, and children!
Reading social cues can be hard for kids and not micromanaging everything somebody does. Being a good friend means not just doing what you want but making sure the other person is comfortable and having fun too.
What Is a Friend and How Can I Be a Good One? is a helpful book for kids to learn how to be a good friend.; especially if they are having trouble holding on to friendships. A wonderful story packed with adorable illustrations. A book for every children's library.
Making friends is such an important skill that every child will benefit from reading this book! I love this series because through the behaviour maps, kids can go through the thinking process on their own to understand why certain behaviours are not nice, and what consequences can come with them. Reading social cues may not be easy at first, but the author breaks it down to steps for kids, making it a lot more achievable. The book also teaches kids to take perspective of others and learn what the expected behaviours are to be a good friend. Highly recommend it!
What a great book this is! Making friends can be a little overwhelming to many children- and actions taken to make friends can sometimes have the opposite effect if they are too jokey or make the other person feel embarrassed. This scenario is perfectly demonstrated through this story. The story also provides top tips and advice that show the possible consequences of different actions taken too. Complete with attractive and child friendly illustrations , a letter to parents and lots of discussion opportunities too. What a great book!
What a clever, inspiring and thought-provoking book. The author, an expert in the field of contextual behavioral science, manages to convey simple and yet powerful messages about friendship in an easy-to-understand and gripping way, supported by wonderful and eye-catching illustrations. Kids learn about what not to do when trying to find a friend and how to improve their reading of subtle clues that other kids give when they interact with them, such as through their body language. I highly recommend this book, and the others in the series, to any young child, and their parents.
This book is a great resource and a wonderful story to teach children about being a good friend and reading social cues and messages. I work with many children who have difficulties with social skills and pragmatic skills. Therefore this book is a great resource to have to help them better understand others’ feelings and perspectives. I will definitely be using this book a lot!
A nice story with great pictures that shows children the importance of understanding social cues and being supportive rather than judgmental. The reader will learn to notice how others react to what they say and do and adjust their behavior accordingly. They also learn how not to be a tattletale but instead discreetly support and help their friends, rather than get them in trouble. This book is probably most effective if it is read together with a parent or teacher.
We all want to be a good friend and this book teaches how to be one. I think when Sam and Connor were not being nice, the main character should have done the kind behavior suggested in the book and not just let the teacher deal with them. That would make a good friend. The illustrations are perfect and made me want to keep reading the entire book and learn.
This book is such a great resource for parents trying to help elementary school, or even preschool aged kids, with social skills. This book focuses on reading social cues and learning when it’s important to tell a trusted adult about someone and when telling would simply be tattle telling. Great resource!
This book is entertaining in that it takes young readers on a journey, exploring the various qualities that define a true friend. The illustrations are fantastic and engaging. It is educational in that it narrative teaches children the importance of kindness, empathy, and understanding in relatable scenarios.
A book in Ms. Chan’s friendship series, this one teaches children the importance of reading social cues - facial expressions, body language and speech - and how to read cues and stop doing something if it annoys someone. It also teaches children not to act like a police officer or tattletale, while helping parents reinforce safety skills. I highly recommend this book which teaches important building blocks for lasting friendships.
Reading social skills comes easier to some people, but not to others. This book is especially important for young children who need a little extra help in the area of reading social skills to become more socialized. I’ll definitely keep this book in my back pocket for when my youngest goes to school. It’s clear and helpful. I would recommend this one for sure.
This is a great book for parents to read with the kids. The message is a great one that should be shared before the kids attend school or kindergarten. Good message.
Filled with vibrant illustrations, this book imparts valuable social skills applicable to everyone. It covers everything from deciphering social cues to promoting communication with friends and discussing emotions and thoughts.
I just read this to my twins and something sparked within them. What a great way to teach kids about social cues in such a way that is creative and fun. I think I’ll be getting a hard copy of this book. Highly Recommend!
Such a valuable guide to help kids understand social cues and how to not be a tattletale yet still encourage friends to follow the rules. As a teacher I wish all the kids in my primary school had this book!
