As we are barreling towards what promises to be a very dramatic ending, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees pauses for a bit of quiet wilderness reflection.
Not that she wants to, but where else would a bear hide from the police other than a cave?
I wouldn't call this filler, per say, but more of a quiet bridge that is setting up the final issue although this one does feel a bit short. Still there is some lovely surreal imagery as Sam comes to terms with herself and decides to embrace her murderous feelings as something that 'has always been a part of you...since the first beat of your heart.' And so I'm guessing some other hearts are going to stop beating soon....
Oh also we get a return of the non-anthropomorphic bear which is cool, and seems to be a commentary on the raw, animalistic nature inside us all.

This was definitely a slower issue BUT I think the messaging behind is ICONIC. Samantha is a best. The fact that we’re expecting her not to kill goes against her very nature. The contrast between the anthropomorphic and regular animals is perplexing yet captivating.

Mmm, the first one in the series that didn't quite get there for me. It was gruesome and I love the artwork but it felt like too much of a bridge to get from 4 to 6. Something else should have happened in the story to give readers the same high as all the other issues. But still great! Excited for issue 6 which isn't on hoopla yet

I wonder the lore behind this. Why are there animals but then also people animals? One person says “We won’t be bullied by you anymore!” Which, in my mind, means that they recognise that they used to be animal animals?

This one was good don’t get me wrong, but nothing action packed happened and there was this weird like look into yourself(the character) moment that I felt was dumb.

I couldn't wait and downloaded ALL of the rest of the series via Hoopla to devour like an indulgent dessert to savor. I'm just so in love the way I was in love with Swan Song in how it captures human nature and provides a commentary that is genius and introspective. We all have things to hide even in perfect worlds like Woodbrook that has been shaken by murders that continue to happen.

The turning point is that Sam now knows the teen murderer Nigel and is trying to stop Nigel's antics as he has shared that he wants to commit murder like Sam and knows her secrets but in a power move that Sam cuts off by realizing that Nigel set up a community member to try to take home a can of paint that was actually a severed hand that she buried outside of the city, Nigel must be stopped but in the meantime, she has to escape because the attention is now that Sam is the murderer and everyone is shocked / not shocked (it's always the ones you never expect).

Sam's experience on the run was anything but a vacation. She's plotting her revenge and return especially on Nigel's whose mom was her best friend but until then she's being haunted by those she has killed. Eeek. Is it the end next issue? I can't!

Discovering that she had been concealing body parts inside cans of paint was a shocking revelation for Sam. Her secret identity as a killer had been exposed by a rival murderer, completely turning her world upside down. With a sense of urgency, Sam flees her hometown in her car, her mind in turmoil as she struggles to escape from custody. As she drives, her thoughts are captured in captions, revealing the chaotic nature of her racing mind.

As Sam continues on her journey, she begins to see the ghosts of her past victims haunting her. She starts to lose her grip on reality and the disturbing images reflect the twisted and gruesome acts she has committed. However, rather than being scared, Sam's only emotion is annoyance at the ghosts' presence.
The story takes a gripping turn when Sam enters a dark cave. It is in this moment that the concept of Sam being a "she-bear" and the existence of wild bears in the real world intersect. The tone of her voice changes as she enters this cave, hinting at a possible connection between Sam and these powerful creatures.

I admired the premise and the execution. The story made me feel super icky.

I am looking forward to the final issue. With this current issue the overall artwork effect is stunning and sets the stage for a very exciting conclusion. This issue is short and to the point it shows how deadly a killer that Sam is. She is definitely a sociopath and killer by all accounts, this story continues to show what a killer is at their most primal. Can't wait for the final issue this is a must read.

Okay. Things are turning a bit weirder, but still SO interesting.
It's hard to talk much about it without major spoilers so it'll be just me rambling about how horrifying things are turning.

The past comes in to hunt you in amazingly gory parts.
Seriously, the victims appearing in unfinished puzzles form is haunting as hell.
One can only hope that our beloved psycho makes it in one piece (You don't see me but I'm finger gunning you all.)

This one was just ok, for some reason it seemed a lot shorter to me and lacked a bit of excitement that the others had. I still have to read #4 so I skipped from #3 (for some reason hoopla doesn't have issue #4 , so I will have to buy it) so maybe that's why this one isn't hitting as hard. It's still a solid piece of the story line and I'm still invested in seeing how this story unfolds and develops.

A bit of a lull in the story before, what I assume, the big shit goes down -- 3.5 stars rounded up.

Samantha is on the run, and we get a sort of inner turmoil scene in the woods where we see her (non-anthropomorphic) bear "friend" in the woods maul another bear (they are fighting over a deer carcass). Insert something here about animalistic nature.

But she has a plan, and she turns to Woodbrook to "fix" things.

Just keeps getting better and better, can't wait for the conclusion

Love everything about it, love the story ,love the art. The only thing I don't get is the wild animals when the characters ARE animals ???? Other then that and the length of it is all I can put in the negative column. WISH IT WAS LONGER IS ALL. And I hope they continue it and keep it a long running series.

This one is a bit more reflective

I want to rate this one higher, as it feels like there are some deep revelations made by Sam’s character, but I’m not sure I understand them yet. Maybe the final issue will clear it up, but I just didn’t understand the cave mirror or portal or whatever that was supposed to be, or the snakes, or the bear fight, besides perhaps conveying the point of leaning towards our natural instincts. Still, this is a fascinating book and I am looking forward to the conclusion.

This issue really built the tension up for the finale. I really liked the insight that we got into Samantha's mind. It has me kinda wishing that this story and this series wasn't going to be coming to an end.

Sam watching the bears fight was ironic. I don't think that she needed something as embracing her true killler self because from the beginning she seemed to be quite in peace with herself as a psycho. The author is making everything easy for her even her escape.

Wow! Ok this volume is basically the crux of the entire plot of this series. I mean it’s true! You can’t expect animals to loose their “instincts.” The next volume’s cover makes total sense to me now!
