A basic guide to sleep disorders, with a focus on overcoming jet lag, insomnia, sleepwalking, and restless leg syndrome. I was disappointed that there was no section on narcolepsy. Could be useful for someone who hasn't tried anything yet. But his answer to most problems was "go see a doctor and do a sleep study".

A decent intro to the subject, a quick read of this may help you sleep better. Check with your medical caregiver before making radical changes to your lifestyle.

A very interesting book and a must read for anyone suffering from sleep disorders, either chronic or occasional.

It was eye-opening to me to discover how many sleep disorders there are, but I was specifically interested in any that apply to me.
The beginning of the book has a very helpful self-assessment, which then points you to the chapters of the book that may apply to you. I focused on those chapters and skimmed the rest

Each chapter is packed with great information and, even better, with really helpful tips to get a better sleep. I tried these for the past few nights and have already been sleeping better.

I highly recommend this book.

Really, no new ideas here. Dark room. Check. No blue light 90 minutes before bed. Check. Go get therapy. Been there, done that. Bedtime routine. Check. This book is about as useful as your average Family Circle magazine article on sleep. Not. Very. But if you are TOTALLY clueless about insomnia, which, if you've had it for any length of time, believe me, you're not, MAYBE you'll learn something.

Good discussion of the various types of insomnia and other sleep disorders. I had no idea there were so many. The book also had a good review of tips, including lifestyle changes, medication and other treatments. Some of them were new to me, even though I have read quite a few books on insomnia. A good study of the health issues.

This is a great book with useful information. I found the questions at the start to be the most helpful. After answering them you was able to look and find which chapter to go to for help with your sleep problems. You don't have to read the entire book to get help.

Not really helpful for my occasional sleep problems. Didn't really care for the quoted dialogs with patients. Felt intrusive more than informative.

Expert advice

I read this book when I was having problems sleeping for few months and couldn’t find the solution to the problem. Having seen doctors in the past and not wanting to go on medication again; I wanted to find a solution in a natural way. I thought sleeping was mostly common sense and thought I knew most of the healthy habits, but the author definitely has a way more in depth knowledge than any doctor I have ever seen. There are lots of useful tips and tricks to getting a better nights sleep. The ‘sleep restriction’ method was definitely contrary to my beliefs on what I thought you needed to do and I found it to be quite effective.

This is a useful book as it definitely belped me sleep better. However it is obvious that the writer hasn't spent much time honing his writing skills. Sometimes I had to read a sentence 3 times as it was either ambiguous or vague. It is understandable though considering the pressures of being a doctor that the book isn't perfectly written! At the end of the day there is a lot of value and solid info in this book for people with specific disorders as well as general sleep hygiene (although there is way more focus on the disorders) and the book can definitely help people in solving their sleep issues or spotting incompetent doctors in lieu of the knowledge aquired

I'm glad I decided to sleep on reviewing this book, because I slept great and feel wonderful today.

The writing is technical without being dense, and although my non-scientific mind struggled with some of the book, for the most part I had no problems understanding it. There is a sleep test that directs you to which chapters will be most beneficial, as well as a chapter on how to create a good sleeping environment.

Sleep Soundly Every Night was vastly insightful and provided a helpful experience in learning how to sleep better. I now go to bed with a great routine that hasn't failed me once. I no longer have anxiety about falling asleep and I know what triggers me not to sleep.

Some good reminders and an easy read. No new information, which isn't surprising given the book is a decade old.

Sleep Soundly Every night is more a diagnosis tool than a solution since author Rosenberg's answer to nearly all sleep disorders is the need to be diagnosed at a special clinic. I think most people will to get a book so they can avoid the expense or inability to go to a specialized clinic and spend the night being studied. But it's not going to achieve that goal. What it can do is help readers toward finding a more specific cause to sleep issues.

The book breaks down as follows: Identifying your sleep problem; Sleep foundations for your best life; The cornerstone of health; How to get a good night's sleep; Impaired sleep or syssomnias; Restless leg syndrome; Insomnia; Circadian rhythm disorders; No sleeping with apnea; Parasomnias; Sleepwalking and night terrors; Sexsomnia; Night eaters;Do you sleep but not too deep? REM sleep; Behavior disorder; Sleep for those with PTSD; Sleep disorders and ADHD; Better sleep quick reference; Pittsburgh sleep quality index; Scoring the PSQI; ADHD disorder checklist, glossary, notes.

The beginning of the book is a lot of science - latest research and studies discussed. A questionaire is used in the beginning to help narrow down the symptoms and achieve an initial self diagnosis. Then each type of sleep problem is discussed. The author uses a test case patient as an introduction, then goes over the problem, then uses a Q&A session at the end of each chapter for FAQs he's received regarding the topic.

The dialogue and Q&A felt incredibly manufactured and read more like a textbook than actual speech. As well, quite a few points were repeated - even to the point of using the same exact sentence in the dialogue, discussion AND Q&A at the end of a single chapter. It made it really hard to take anything the author said with credibility when so much felt manufactured or repetitive. Corny quotes at the beginning of each chapter became an eye roller.

As well, and not the author's responsibility, but the book continually makes the point that there's really not a lot someone can do about the issues by themselves. Nearly all the solutions were the result of a specialty doctor's diagnosis and a stay at a sleep clinic overnight. Clearly, sleep issues greatly affect health so a person with a chronic problem should seek help. But in that case, the book isn't really needed anyway then. But for those with snoring spouses or who are tired all the time, perhaps this will give them some clues where the problem lies and the impetus to spend the money for a sleep specialist.

Topics from issues with children, diabetes, ADHD, PTSD, night shifts, jet lag, sleep walking, apnea, snoring, and many more are covered. In that regard, it is a thorough book though a lot can be avoided as not being relevant.

For the last couple years, I was having sleeping problems ... sometimes it would take me a long time to get to sleep or I would wake up wide awake in the middle of the night for a couple of hours. Needless to say, I was exhausted. I did a sleep test and discovered I have sleep apnea. Though I've dealt with it, I still like to read books on sleeping.

This book is divided into four parts:

1. Sleep foundations for your best life - the cornerstones of health and how to get a good night's sleep
2. Impaired sleep or dyssomnias - restless leg syndrome, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders and no sleeping with apnea
3. Parasomnias - sleepwalking and night terrors, night eaters and REM sleep behavior disorder
4. Sleep disorders and major sleep disorders and major health issues - post traumatic stress disorder and ADHD

The first step is to identify your sleep problem. There is a checklist which then leads to you the chapters you should focus on.

Rather than just providing information in a scientific manner, there are "conversations" with his patients plus Q & As which provides a less boring way to read and absorb the information.

I liked this book a lot. Even though I have done my own research into how to get better sleep, I learned a few new things. I'll definitely be investing in a new mattress and bedding. And I'll try some of the techniques that Dr. Rosenberg suggests to improve my sleeping. Sleep quality affects nearly every aspect of your life...including how long you live.

The review of various sleep disorders was fascinating. I had no idea there was a disorder called Sexsomnia, officially recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sexsomnia is related to sleepwalking...except this is having sex while asleep. Now, some spouses might say that this is standard operating procedure with the person they make love with...but who knows, maybe it's not because they've been married 28 years, maybe it's a sleep disorder.

Dr. Rosenberg delves into sleep issues that most other guides to getting better sleep seem to ignore: children's sleep problems, night terrors, sleepwalking, circadian rhythm disorders, and post-traumatic stress syndrome's affect upon sleep.

Of the books currently out there on sleep problems/solutions, this is one of the best.

Dr. Rosenberg's sleeping guide really helped with my sleeping problems. I am very sensitive when it comes to sleeping and this book not only provides information for big disorders such as PTSD, ADHD, etc., but small tips as well. It helps me better understand why I am having issues with sleeping, and little things I can do to improve them. The best part about the book aside from the material, is the tone used throughout. Dr. Rosenberg discusses sleep issues in a way that doesn't sound too childish, or like I'm reading a textbook from high school science class.

Dr. Rosenberg will help you to sleep soundly every night by providing you better information on your diagnosis and the tips to catch those zZz's so that you will feel fantastic every day. You won't regret it (unless you sleep through your alarm clock, but at least you're sleeping!:P).

This is a wonderful book, well written and easy to follow. I received my review copy and found out some things about my own sleep I did not realize. I found that I have a sleep disorder. I read Dr. Rosenberg's book, then with two simple steps I was sleeping like I have not since I was a kid. So nice to feel rested in the morning again. Who knew there were little things you could do yourself like getting rid of blue lights in your bedroom, or cooling off the house before you lay down that could make such a big difference. I am even using some of what I learned for my granddaughter who never slept well, and now she does. Thanks for such a useful book.

While this book did not help me specifically, I certainly did learn a great deal about sleep. I learned what is missing when a person sleep walks or acts out while sleeping. I learned why alarm clock lights are red and not blue. I also learned about the correspondence between a sleep disorder and ADHD. Much of what the author addresses requires seeing a sleep specialist, but he does have a great checklist at the back with suggestions every person can implement to increase the likelihood of a better night's sleep.

While I gathered a few good suggestions and compiled them into a checklist to consult before I go to read, there was less to help the average insomniac and more to help people with serious conditions like sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome. I didn't care for the weird, awkward conversations he had with his patients. They were odd and didn't sound particularly genuine. So, my search continues for the holy grail--a good night's sleep.

I found this book to be very helpful. Turning my bedside clock around helped tremendously - no more blue light in my face. I also try to avoid using my computer, i-phone and i-pad before going to sleep. Taking melatonin about an hour before going to bed is amazing. I drift off into sleep easily and wake up refreshed with no grogginess. Sleeping better really makes a difference in how I function everyday.

The book answered many of my questions about sleep and the lack of it. It is simple and straight forward. The one downside to it is that the author has some exercises to complete about sleep that are impossible while asleep or awake and trying to sleep, for that matter. Still interesting, good information though, for some seem to work.

This book is so awful. If you don't know the meaning of the word "insomnia" the author may be able to help you out. It's that basic a book. Nothing new here. Thank heavens I got it from my library rather than paying for it. I guess he didn't see his title as a con.

An Important Subject Most of us Ignore

Sleep is the basis of good health. It may not cure you or make you healthier and lighter. But it will stop you from achieving those goals. And you do not see the problems until you correct the problem.

There was nothing new for me here, having already learned most of the information in here from other sources, but would be useful to someone else who hasn't. I skimmed most of it and thought it was bogged down by too many stories.
