Prickly emergency physician Regina has never liked romantic gestures, but when her girlfriend, ER nurse Ellie, surprises her with a gift right after Valentine’s Day, rejecting it is not an option.
Little does she know the impulse buy will have unexpected consequences.
“Impulse Buy” is a short story sequel to Jae’s lesbian romance Bachelorette Number Twelve.
Jae is the author of twenty-six award-winning romances between women. She lives in the sunniest city of Germany, near the French and Swiss borders. The writing bug bit her at the age of eleven.
She used to work as a psychologist but gave up her day job in 2013 to become a full-time writer and a part-time editor. As far as she’s concerned, it’s the best job in the world.
When she’s not writing, she is an avid reader of sapphic books, indulges her ice cream and office supply addictions, and watches way too many crime shows.
4,5 stars Short, sweet and funny. A one shot continuation of Bachelorette Number Twelve. Equally as good. But read that one first, otherwise this doesn't make sense.
It was fun getting a little glimpse into the future lives of Regina and Ellie, who fell in love in Bachelorette Number Twelve. If you haven’t read that yet, it’s a must before reading this one.
I was most definitely not ready to say goodbye to Ellie and Regina after reading Bachelorette number 12. So I may have squeed when I found Impulse Buy. I loved this short read. It’s such a sweet and hilarious snapshot of Ellie and Regina. It takes place almost a year after that fateful fly incident 😜 Brilliant read.
Regina and Ellie one year later. How their love has grown and flourished! To get a perspective on them, you need to read the wonderful book Bachelorette and Twelve by Jae!!!
That was waaaaayyyy too short!!!! I need this to be a series like Boyfriend Material, where I get a novel through each progression of their relationship.
CHARACTER & STORY IMPRESSIONS: It’s so nice to revisit these characters after Bachelorette Number Twelve. It makes me want to reread the main novel just to see them again. One year later, Regina and Ellie are still going strong, taking a new step in their relationship. I’m glad to see Regina still has some reservations about opening up to others, but is constantly working to do better for herself and for Ellie, not because Ellie is forcing her to change. Their banter had me smiling from ear to ear.
HIGHLIGHTS: * Highlight 1: “Love is definitely a health hazard.” * Highlight 2: Vickie pretending she still disapproves of Regina. * Highlight 3: The fly. * Highlight 4: Regina and Ellie taking another step in the girlfriend era.
PERSONAL TAGS: * 3rd person, Regina’s POV * Both heroines are lesbians * Doctor / nurse * Domestic bliss * Happily ever after * Less of a grump / still a sunshine * Spice Level: 🌶️ (implied sex scene, kissing only) * Workplace romance
I don't know how she does it, but it seems no matter how short or long a book by Jae is, it always sends me on an emotional rollercoaster that I really never want to stop returning to go again. Impulse Buy is honestly a perfect short story sequel to my favorite book, which is Bachelorette Number Twelve. From laughter, to tears of sweetness, I'm pretty sure I had a smile on my face the entire time reading.
Impulse Buy kept that same dynamic and banter I loved so much with Ellie and Regina, and just made it even better. To keep my review as vague as I can to not reveal spoilers.... Ellie's shy/flustered nature in the ED trying to gauge Regina's plans was so cute, along with the choice of food to offer (loved that it made a small appearance... if you know, you know). Ellie's gift she got Regina gave me a lump in my throat and perhaps some watery eyes. Then what Ellie did for Regina at the house brought tears to my eyes. The genuine thoughtfulness of that gesture and the tenderness behind it was beautiful.
Hoping I kept that vague enough. In reality, I could easily make this review just as long as the story because I love these two characters and their story so much.
Ellie’s post-Valentine’s Day surprise gift to Regina leads to even bigger surprises for both of them in this heartwarming follow-up to Bachelorette Number Twelve.
Ellie and Regina’s delightful opposites-attract chemistry sparkles all throughout this story, showcasing not only their playful banter, but also their growing trust and comfort with each other. It is particularly heartening to see Regina’s increased comfort with friendship and community, although she still retains enough of the frosty edges of her personality to remain authentic and believable.
Impulse Buy is a sweet and fun read from start to finish.
This is a short follow up to Bachelorette Number 12 - sort of an elongated epilogue to the epilogue. Again it is Valentine's day . After Ellie buys a surprise triptych for Regina - it does not fit on her bedroom wall. They take this as a good reason to move in together - and to be honest I've heard worse reasons.
This is a fun follow up showing us where they end up. Who would have thought that Regina had ever been icy?!
You definitely need to have read Bachelor Number 12 for it to make sense - and that's recommended.
Thanks Jae for pulling everybody into this story! It was a fun fast read - for my audiobook folks, you will be able to get through this book every easily. It was a great and fast read. It gives you a lenses on how Regina’s personality and ways do and do not change, and the fact that Ellie hadn’t lost site of reading Regina. It’s all good and fast feels :-) If you haven’t read or listened to Bachelorette Number 12 yet, I suggest you do that first if you can.
This is a short story sequel to number 12. Ellie and Regina worked at the same hospital. They have fallen in love, but they have separate living quarters. On the impulse Ellie but three pictures that sound up their relationship. They did not fit into Regina‘s house, and from there they discussed moving in together, and the story picks up speed. I think this is a wonderful, romantic story, and I recommend it to a romance reader.
This short follow-up to BACHELORETTE NUMBER 12 by Jae furthers the complex relationship between nurse Ellie and ED physician Regina. I read them in reverse by accident but found this a good standalone story of two young women trying to live together when one of them is scared of intimacy and commitment. It’s a humorous and healing tale, an apt sequel to the bachelorette saga.
“Impulse Buy” is so short that it is over without ever really getting started. It reads like a chapter out of a book - or a book that is being released chapter by chapter. Prickly emergency room doctor Regina gets a surprise Valentine gift from her girlfriend Ellie. The problem is that it is too big for her small apartment. Well, there's an easy solution to that. The end. 2.5 Stars, brought back to 2 Stars.
I love Jae's writing, whether full novel or a short story like this one. This is a perfect follow-up to Bachelorette Number Twelve. It takes an already wonderful book and then adds a little special "extra epilogue" - like adding g a pretty bow to an already perfectly wrapped gift!
Impulse Buy is a great follow-up to Bachelorette Number Twelve. I love getting a window into Dr. McIcy/Romance Grinch and sweet-hearted Emergency Department nurse Ellie. They are taking the plunge into the next steps of their love story. I’m shipping them big time and sending Jae all my dandelion wishes.
Regina and Nellie are back! This is the perfect sequel to their love story taking the next step in their relationship. Loved the references to the Twinkie and chair incident from the first novel.
If you haven’t read Bachelorette #12 yet, it definitely needs to be on your TBR list!
Cute little sequel short story for the novel Bachelorette Number Twelve (great novel!). This is essentially a bonus epilogue, so it only makes sense to read this if you have read the novel first. I always love the follow-up short stories, but I also wish it was just included in the original novel. If you read Bachelorette Number Twelve then this is a must-read.
Its fun, its cute, its also very short and simple, so I cant justify giving it 5-stars.
The short story is a heartwarming read. It was great to have a glimpse of Ellie and Regina's future together. Just as the novel, Bachelorette Number Twelve, this short story made me smile and laugh while reading it. If you've read the novel, you absolutely need to read this short story!
It's a slow story, but there's nothing tragic about it. It was heartwarming to see the character grow and improve simply because she had someone who didn't judge her. I loved the part where it says, "You found someone to love," but she answers, "Better than that, she loves me too." So sweet!
A fun, sweet and cute follow-up story to Jae's very popular Bachelorette Number Twelve. The main characters of emergency doctor Regina and ER nurse Ellie are such a great pair and I enjoyed getting a glimpse into their future together!
I loved this additional short story, catching up with Regina and Ellie from Bachelorette Number Twelve. In the book, Ellie’s impulse buys leads them to an exciting outcome.
