Romantic relationships between humans and elves is outlawed, punishable by imprisonment, or worse. Lewis Shaw, an ordinary blacksmith, had no intention to fall for his valued customer, the elven mercenary, Elora. With the relentless restrictions on elves growing, Elora reveals her she has fallen for Lewis too. Together, they decide to commit one of the most heinous acts in the country--starting a family.
Without options, the pair decide to turn to Elora's people, the elusive elves of Lunae, in hopes of creating a future without fear of being separated.
This female-led friends to lovers romance features a thoughtful, creative blacksmith and his heroine assassin elven lover in a wholesome steamy tale.
Nice enough content: a couple who loves each other despite the social forces that would have them kept apart. It's more of a feel-good story, with only minor conflict, and it has basically no "will-they-won't-they" or other intra-relationship drama. A story that I personally could have really liked.
My problem is mostly the execution. The FMC doesn't get to do much of anything, other than be persecuted against. While it is true that her profession (warrior/mercenary) isn't totally relevant to the more laid-back tone of the book as a whole, it would have been nice for her to, I dunno, intimidate a bully into backing down or something. Overall, she just spends the whole book hiding who she is, and talking/thinking about how much she likes MMC.
Because so little actually happens, we also don't get to see much of their chemistry: what chemistry there is is all referred to as memories. "I remember listening to her stories for hours", instead of actually writing a scene where she sits down to tell him a story.
The book also kind of fails at the one thing it seems to focus on: the intimacy. The book has a rather high smut-to-other ratio, but the writing style gets very repetitive and stilted any time the story starts to be about a romantic or smutty moment. "He knows what she wants" is said far too often, each time feeling like it was inserted into the scene at random. The onomatopoeia's for moaning and such are all written as "ah's"; Every single one.
As a sort of icing on the cake, it could use some editing help. There are multiple instances of missing words and misspellings/using the wrong word. There is a character whose name seems to have been spelled differently in a previous draft, because one chapter has it misspelled the same way multiple times.
Overall, I don't hate the book, I'm just disappointed. I would have enjoyed it's subject matter, but the writing wasn't up to my personal standards.
It’s alright. Unfortunately, unlike a lot of the author’s other work, it falls into what I would consider a lot of the pitfalls in the “romance for men” community that keep it from being as enjoyable as traditional romance.
For starters, the leads - Elora and Lewis - have 0 friction between them, ever. For a book that’s selling point is 2 people of different races that can’t be together, it’s never really capitalized on. Even when faced with adversity, the solutions are quick and agreed upon. It’s illegal for them to be together - instantly decide to move. Lewis needs to gain citizenship in their new home - no problem, he’s cool with having less rights and will just wait until he can make them dinner. If he can’t gain citizenship - no matter, we’ll move back to the human realm, where it’s still illegal but we won’t touch on that.
I understand part of the issue is this being a much shorter book, and not designed to tackle things like that. Yet for an already short book, there is SO much sex. I’ll happily read some smut in a romantasy novel - especially when it serves the plot more than just sex for the sake of sex - but this book has it happen so frequently, and go on for so long, that I’d find myself tempted to just skip it.
All in all it’s not a BAD book, and I don’t regret reading it, but coming off the author’s other works and with such an interesting premise, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit let down.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
Could have been so much more. A quick read, but lacks any real conflict with things just working out for the best all the time. In terms of the smut, repetitive and over too soon.
