This book presents and develops the basic methods and models that are used by demographers to study the behaviour of human populations. The procedures are clearly and concisely developed from first principles and extensive applications are presented.
This is a wonderful book. I am a closeted demographer--by which I mean that I have no formal training, but an interest and an amateur's knowledge. Parts of the text (mainly some of the formulas) were a bit over my head. But I really enjoyed the explanations of how we predict changes in the population, what things like the birth rate, death rate, marriage rate and more actually mean and how we measure them. I got this book from Philip Cohen's demography graduate seminar syllabus (he posted it online). I think I might read the articles suggested for the course as well (slowly, of course).
