Man's best friend is about to become his worst nightmare...
US army captain, Ed Crowley has a tragic reason for not liking dogs.
He’s about to have 115 million more.
A mutated rabies virus is sweeping through the world’s dog population, and no one is safe. With over 90 million domestic and tens of millions more wild and feral dogs in the United States, Rabies 2.0 is about to unleash hell. The infected animals aren’t just rabid, they have mutated into ugly, insatiable, and very large killing machines and Captain Crowley is about to lead a team into an overrun town to rescue a group of civilians trapped in a school.
To him it’s just another day at the office, after all, as with any other enemy he’d faced, bullets win the argument, and these ones couldn’t shoot back. What he doesn’t know is that he’s about to face a foe more cunning and ruthless than any on two legs that he’d ever faced.
Don’t miss the Rabid States Series by Scott Medbury, author of the haunting post-apocalyptic series AMERICA FALLS.
Title: Rabid States Box Set Author: Scott Medbury Genre: Horror, Apocalyptic Publication Year: 2024
Review: In Rabid States, the apocalyptic vision is not about zombies or electromagnetic pulses, but about our wonderful canine mascots (we say in Puerto Rico). Having recently lost my gorgeous dachshund Chocolate, I cried a bit during some of the scenes. Although, here, during the apocalyptic event there is a mutation where the dogs grow in size and weight, actually outgrowing their skin in places, their teeth becoming more numerous.
A platoon of soldiers has gone into the heartland of America to rescue a school of teachers and students to relocate them to safe zones. Of course, the dogs have mutated to become smarter, faster, more aggressive. The platoon must locate the survivors via school buses, but the first goal is to get the to the buses, and the dogs have undergone another transformation that is unexpected, and terrifying for even the most battle-hardened grunt.
There are some perfect characterizations of typical apocalypse characters. These are for the most part one-note, but then there are characters designed to manipulate our emotions. They all work together to create a memorable apocalyptic narrative.
Lots of action. Not everyone makes it, so that is realistic. Starting with rabid dogs was a great new perspective; unfortunately later human zombies were brought in also. (Dumb human zombies have been so overdone they grated on me). The smart dog commander was another great new twist but then dropped for the humans that were as dumb as zombies usually are. The smart and telepathic dog shtick was a great new angle that should have been developed.
If you are into the zompoc genre and are looking for something a little different, then this one should be on your list - it is certainly not for pussies (not with the mutts in the pages of this series). As a whole this is an enjoyable series to read and hard to put down. Book 2 had some typo issues that were a bit distracting - but, that aside, the series is great value for money and a fun rollercoaster ride through the dogpoc.
Whomever did the editing and proof reading on this set needs to be fired! A high schooler could have done a better job. Use a thesaurus for gosh sakes. Spell check would have been a useful tool as well. There is a story here, and it was told well. I couldn't get over how sloppily it was put together.
I enjoyed all 4 books of the series. I liked most of the characters and losing some of them was sad. The story was interesting and it was easy to believe that rabies could mutate causing an apocalypse. The interaction between the Captain and his second in command was heartwarming. Josephine's and the Captain's romance was a nice break in between all the fighting for survival.
This is just another end of days series. The story is good as is the writing. There is no literary prize here but what there is perfectly fits a summer day’s reading on the beach.
I'm not into these end of the world books, but I have to say I enjoyed Rabid States, it is very well written and once I got into it I found myself cheering for the USA army.
Lots of action, adventure, drama and heartache. The indomitable spirit of the survivors is easy to admire and once the Zombie apocalypse hits hopefully the remainders can perform as well.
… of writing :). It’s a good story, overall , with a swift action and some interesting characters. Apocalypse and tragedy make, almost always, books readable and worthy your time :).
A different kind of apocalyptic tale. Really good, sucks you in and before you know it, you have read the entire series from start to finish! Great read!
From one series to another Scott has me hooked. I came to this series after the America falls series with high expectations, and it did not disappoint. 100% recommend!
Scott Medbury's original take on a post-apocalyptic narrative involves man's best friend, a rabies virus that mutates our loveable furry friends into nightmarish fiends, and the struggle to survive one pulse-accelerating scenario after another. If you like zombie apocalypse stories, you will probably like this one. As for me, I loved this one.
True horror is loving your beagle named Almond, having her get infected with a virus that mutates her into double her size, bones breaking through skin, ups her aggression proportionate to her size, having to put her down, and finding that you no longer have the heart to mercifully help her through the malady.
Millions of United States dog owners found out the hard way, and when they needed a way out of their towns, the military had to escort them to safety, but they would not reach safety unscathed. This is definitely a high, anxiety-inducing boxed set. Here, you will find blood and gore, suspense, action scenarios, fun characters, and some real pathos.
There's a believable love story forged in the running of the gauntlet that I enjoyed. There are instances of inappropriate humor sometimes used during stressful situations that made me laugh thinking that the statement demonstrated not only wit, but also a situational analysis that reveals psychological training. Five stars for the innovation and specialness of the characters.
