I went into this book with some reservations - I'm a mental health counselor and when I see words like "trauma" and "healing" I fear they will be buzzwords used to draw people in. However, I was so pleasantly surprised by the content of this book. This is incredibly well-researched, which is a huge deal because, when talking about trauma, you want to ensure that people are getting accurate information and seeing current research so that they do not do farther harm to themselves or others. The information presented in the first few sections of this book are very well written and can be easily understood by professionals or those unfamiliar with the terms. It is easy to understand and I think a lot of people can connect with the information as it is presented. It goes through not only definitions, but how trauma impacts the mind, the body, and our interactions with others (things I teach to my own clients in daily therapy sessions). I also really appreciated that the author took the time to break down specific yoga positions, what they help with, and how to offer assistance without further traumatizing the clients. While this book is aimed at current yoga instructors to become more trauma-informed, I strongly believe counselors or regular individuals hoping to heal through yoga can utilize the book. Research, techniques for breathing, and yoga positions are included and detailed out. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book!

“The Power of Trauma-Informed Yoga” has come into my life during a very important period, where I have been working on my self development and deep introspection using many different tools, such as yoga practice, psychotherapy, NLP, nature activities… And eventually another immensely valuable tool is this book! Sue is very well educated on trauma-informed yoga and has great experience in teaching, and these characteristics are very profound throughout every chapter. The book is written in a manner which makes you feel well informed and supported, and gives you a rounded perspective of the subject. I am so lucky to having read this book, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Trauma-Informed Yoga and evolve into their own self awareness and development!
I found this book extremely moving. It offers a very original perspective on the process of recovery from traumatic events. It is clear that it has been written with empathy and experience by a yoga practitioner, this book goes beyond being a simple guide; It is a great relief and companion for anyone experiencing the shadows of trauma. I really recommend it, what impressed me most about this work is its holistic approach. It does not limit itself to offering yoga techniques, but explores the intersection between mind, body and soul on the path to healing. It is very complete and easy to understand.
Blending therapeutic knowledge with an accessible voice, Berman insightfully chronicles trauma’s bonds alongside yoga’s profound capacity to heal. With care and nuance, each chapter grounds readers in wise principles for safely progressing through yoga postures and breathwork. While more diverse case studies would strengthen its impact, there’s tremendous value in both the mindful philosophy and the intuitive sequencing. Offering trauma survivors an empowering reclamation of body and spirit, this compassionate guide lays a thoughtful foundation.
This is a good guide. I appreciate that it lays out the different yoga stances you can try if you need to work on yourself as well as the tips. Even though it's a short book, the whole thing is informative. You can definitely learn something from here. Trauma can get to you inside and out, and this a good way in working towards recovery. And even if you're not in the road to recovery, it's still pretty good overall.
As a yoga therapist I loved the way the author clearly explained the powerful healing principles behind the yoga system. She explains simply and clearly and this book could be useful to readers of all yoga levels
This book is for those who would like to improve their mental health without turning to medication, explicitly dealing with trauma resolution. Yoga is a great way to calm the mind, body, and spirit. This book serves as an excellent guide for that goal. Building a safe space is something some therapists need to remember to teach, and this book has a chapter about that. It's a physical space where you can feel safe, with music, lighting, and color helping the reader build a safe space in your home. This book aids readers in healing and trusting themselves more, putting control in their own hands. The Trauma-Sensitive Regulation Exercises are interesting. The visual grounding exercise was something I had not tried before; it is easy to follow, as are the other exercises and practices in the book.
