I had to borrow this from work as soon as it came in. A superpowered, frowny-faced rooster who fights demons with his ultra sonic Cock-A-Doodle-Doo attack? Come on. It's the greatest manga ever created. It's so fucking hilarious and ridiculous that it made me a giggly mess while reading it.
A rooster wanders the earth, fighting demons and looking for the one who killed his sister...
I'm not one of those people who acts like manga and American comics are completely different things but this is one of those concepts I don't think would ever show up in an American comic. The title character is a bad ass rooster who fights giant demons.
On his journey, the rooster befriends a toucan, forms a grudging relationship with a one eyed sea turtle, and battles several kaiju size demons. The book is humorous but only because it's not jokey at all and no one thinks a bad ass rooster is that out of the ordinary.
Sigh. I guess I'm in for the duration. Five out of five stars.
Poyo, the rooster from John Layman's Chew (see: Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo), is . . . um . . . homaged? reimagined? . . . as a modern-day ronin wandering Japan and slaying kaiju-size demons as he seeks the one responsible for killing his sister. Fortunately, for some unknown reason, his crow is capable of exorcising or destroying the demons, and, despite his loner attitude, he is able to gather new allies from battle to battle.
Corny and dumb, but I might pick up one more volume to see if it grows on me.
Pues es un gallo que pelea contra monstruos gigantescos, como que son demonios cuando la gente se pone toda loca por el estrés o algo así. Me gusto la historia del zoológico con el tucan, y la del Yakuza que vendía pollitos
3.5 star

What a wild premise to play around with and mangaka Shu Sakuratani doesn't shy away from all the silliness of this legendary little rooster and its ability to destroy titan-esque kaijus! The artwork is gorgeous and the action is massive and fast-paced but the humour is what takes over more often than I wish it did.
I should probably start by saying this manga was an awesome surprise because it succeeds exactly at what it is trying to do. I shouldn't have liked this--I normally like psychological, dark-leaning and mature manga--but I enjoyed this way more than I expected.
If the cover and the name 'Rooster Fighter' isn't already obvious to you, this is a manga that puts humour at the forefront. It uses absurdism really well and relies on established manga tropes that manga lovers will recognise. I'm not going to talk about how deep the plot was or how well-realised the characters were because that's really not the point of this manga.
I must have read this volume in no more than 40min, so if you're looking for a quick, hilarious read, you should definitely pick this up. I also read volume 2 in a heartbeat and it's probably even better.
This is, as expected, pretty silly. Better than I expected, but among the best manga ever, according to some lists… I don’t think so. It’s about an itinerant rooster that seems to be searching for a particular demon, which people turn into. The demons are basically kaiju creatures and the rooster can beat them up and blow them apart when he crows. I don’t think stories that anthropomorphize creatures tend to do anything with it, and that’s the case here. It’s pretty obviously a trope just transplanted onto a rooster. Fun, but I don’t think you can take it seriously and have it stand on its own legs.
This was an awesome idea / concept. But the execution left a bit to be desired. A lot of the dialog is the same from encounter to demon and repeat (like someone just hit copy paste). The art was excellent. Somehow those chicken feathers look like the tight abs of an beffey human.
OMG! is really the best review I can give of Rooster Fighter. The beginning is hilarious. It is exactly what you would expect for an adventure story. Boy meets girl, but he has to go. He is just too much man to be tied down. Only substitute man with chicken. I could not stop laughing. It was very silly and I cannot wait to see where this story is going.
This is not going to be for everyone. It's ridiculous, stupid, and highly entertaining. We follow a lone rooster named Keiji who roams the land in search of food. Along the way he encounters these demons that terrorize the towns people. He uses his skills to fight off these monsters. If you like strange comics and have a unique sense of humor, I recommend this.
A lone rooster with super strength wanders Japan looking for the giant demon that killed his sister. Along the way he fights other demons, has adventures, and befriends other animals such as a sea turtle with a grudge against seagulls.
Nije da sam se baš kidala od smijeha, ali korektne fore, što jes', jes'! Malo je možda i do mene, dok uplovim u svijet mangi kako treba, ali za prvi dio 4⭐️ i idemo na kukuriku broj 2!
A noble drifter with intense fighting skills and an awesome finishing move wanders modern Japan, fighting evil and protecting the downtrodden while searching to avenge an event from his tragic past.
He is a domestic rooster
It sounds like a one-joke gimmick, but the manga takes things just seriously enough, and is better than it has any right to be, mixing Wandering Samurai tropes with Attack On Titan's human kaiju and a mix of animal and human guest stars.
By the end of this volume the series is moving away from a "monster of the week" stories to a larger narrative and recurring cast, something that makes it rise above other gag series like Way of the Househusband.
This was another one where I read a sample and it grabbed me, so I requested it.
Alright, let me tell you, I did NOT think I would be interested in this one at ALL and if I hadn't read the sample chapter, I wouldn't have even thought to pick this one up.
I am SO GLAD that I did! I guess I expected this to be stupid or cheesy and it was NOT. I was the stupid one for making groundless assumptions based off of what I thought a manga about a rooster fighting demons would be like. So yeah, that whole saying, don't judge a book off of it's cover/synopsis? So true.
Anywho, this book DID start off with some rather adult content, Mr. Rooster was having some..."evening fun" with a hen. I was not expecting that. Also, SUPER violent. Granted, it is demons getting horribly killed and they DO need to be stopped so they won't kill innocent people/animals, and it does kind of happen off page, but the aftermath and the outlines of how they die is pretty violent. So just a warning, not for the little ones for sure.
And I have to exclaim, OMG there is a SHOEBILL as a character in this!!!! They are only the MOST TOTES ADORBS birds EVAR!!!!
Worth the read, if only for the shoebill, lol.
Recommending if you like the idea of a vengeance-seeking rooster slaying murderous demons in violent ways, while making friends along the way. Also totes adorbs is his young sidekick. That chapter nearly wrecked me, FYI. The love he had for his "daddy"!!! Also, what that poor man went through. So sad.
4, I did not expect to like this as much as I did, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Rooster Fighter is a hilarious and ridiculous manga series about a yakuza-like rooster fighting house-sized demons to avenge his sister. The tone of this first volume is perfect, shifting from cutesy sweet to intensely dramatic, and the range of the art heightens the comedy of each joke. The art style is distinct, incredibly detailed, and beautiful, which often adds to the ridiculousness of what's going on in each panel. There's surprising depth to the characters and their motivations, and it was fun watching them interact with each other. I loved that the chapter titles were all references to bird-related proverbs, adding a layer of poetry to the story. This was a funny and bizarre book that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a perfect mood lifter while still having some depth to it, and I'm excited to continue the story to learn more about the main character and the demons he fights.
