Arianna Jackson—AJ to her friends—has experienced enough drama in the past six months to last her a lifetime. Finding out she’s adopted and a twin to the girl she found brutally murdered and dumped in her alley being among the headliners. And, of course, there’s her sister’s killer, still pursuing her and the secret she holds, despite assurances he’s currently locked away in a secure government facility.
Unfortunately, even the best of intentions prevent her from living a drama-free existence when Charlie Wilson, a frequent client of her Mischievous Malamute photography business and an old high school friend, asks her for help after being arrested for a heinous crime he insists he didn’t commit. Sure, Charlie may be arrogant and self-centered, but in AJ’s book, being a jerk doesn’t necessarily mean he’s guilty—not of this crime, anyway.
AJ quickly realizes her old pal may not be as innocent as she’d originally been led to believe when he produces a sketchy alibi and is less than forthcoming about a series of missing hours the day of the crime. Still, with or without Charlie’s assistance, she’s determined to find the truth, wherever it leads.
Armed with her Alaskan Malamute, Nicoh, and best friend, Leah Campbell, AJ searches for shreds of evidence to prove Charlie’s innocence. But the harder they look, the greater the roadblocks they encounter as it becomes apparent Charlie isn’t the only one with secrets to hide and demons to bury. In fact, much more may be at stake, including the bonds of friendship.
In a world that walks the tightrope of good versus evil while nudging the boundaries of black versus white, there are always shades of grey—where the truth you seek isn’t always the one you find. Sometimes the demons that haunt us are resurrected for something greater than revealing the truth. Sometimes the reasons go beyond vengeance…beyond retribution…beyond revenge.
Harley Christensen currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her significant other and their own mischievous motley crew of rescue dogs (aka the “kids”).
When not at her laptop, Christensen is an avid hockey fan and lover of all things margarita. It’s also rumored she’s never met a green chile or jalapeño she didn’t like, regardless of whether it liked her back.
She is the author of the Mischievous Malamute Mystery Series and Six Seasons Suspense Series.
I loved this engrossing, intriguing, and surprisingly funny mystery, and devoured the whole thing in just about two days. I say “surprisingly funny” because I don’t run across many mysteries that are as laugh-out-loud hilarious as this one. The author has a real talent for comedy and I found myself smiling or laughing every other page. This was actually the second book I’ve read from this author, because I read the first in the series, Gemini Rising, as well. I laughed just as hard with that one too, and so I expect that I’ll end up greatly enjoying the whole series.
This book (book 2) is part of the Mischievous Malamute Mystery series, which is true to the title and features a very sweet (and funny) Alaskan Malamute, Nicoh, as one of the stars. OMG I *love* Nicoh. This might sound weird to say, but the author does a really good job of complex characterization of a dog. You might be puzzled by me saying that, but once you read these books, you will understand. Nicoh comes across just as finely nuanced as the other, human, characters do, and he has SUCH a personality. I love it. If you’re a dog lover, I guarantee you will fall in love with Nicoh too.
Besides that, the mystery plot of this book (and the first one in the series) were both excellent as well. I was genuinely scratching my head trying to figure out who did it, how they did it, and why. It felt like a good old-fashioned game of Clue, which is how I think any really good mystery should feel to the reader. I also loved the way the cast of characters all interacted with each other and played off each other, and there was just a hint of romance in the mix too, which I always appreciate.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves well-written mystery novels that engage the intellect while also being entertaining, and/or anyone who really likes funny, contemporary fiction. It’s a winner.
As always loved the characters and owning one myself the malamute is banging on. This book though did get a little over bigger in language not all of which helped the book to flow, it detracted somewhat from following the plot. Noticed a few errors and a few nicely used words but in slightly the wrong context. Sorry, I'm a Brit who is a stickler for the language. If you ever want a proof reader !! Love the stories ...can we have a bit more malamute mayhem ?
AJ and company are at it again. This time, an old high school classmate is found dead after a party held by another classmate. Party-holder classmate is being held for the murder, but did he do it? Does he have it in him to kill, or is he just merely obnoxious and snobby? AJ, Leah and Nicoh to the rescue, along with Aj's maybe significant other and Leah's maybe significant other...But let's not leave Nicoh out, either, Nicoh's best pal gets to stay over but alas is not destined to be his neighborhood playmate for long.
