Written in between Kiss of the Highlander and The Dark Highlander (books 5 and 6 of the Highlander series, respectively), this 8th story, Into the Dreaming, despite being part of the series, has no overlap concerning characters and events with the other seven books. To be honest, I don’t really understand why it is part of the Highlander series, especially when the author explains in her foreword that this novella eventually gave rise to Fever, her paranormal UF series. Fever is completely separate from it, despite some world building being the same. So, to recap, this novella doesn’t really fit the chronologyy of Highlander, it was just tacked on as an 8th book, but carries the seeds for the Fever series.
If you buy this book, apart from the 100-page novella, you also get a few extras: a book proposal for Ghost of a Chance, deleted scenes from Kiss of the Highlander, an unpublished version of The Dark Highlander, a sneak peak at the graphic novel Fever Moon, and an excerpt from Darkfever. All in all, it was just good to stay in Moning’s world a little longer. The novella was entertaining, but not as good as books 4-7, and the rest of the bonus material is also interesting. I was most intrigued by the book proposal and would have loved to read the entire novel. I’m glad I didn’t just read it for completion’s sake; it was really worth it. Still, the other Highlander books (mostly 4-7) and the Fever series (1-5) were better; I simply adored those.
