Discover the surprising history of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War... Free BONUS Inside!
When the establishment of the State of Israel was announced on May 14, 1948, it seemed to many people that the new nation could not survive for long. The haste with which it was created meant that Israel lacked the infrastructure of government, and its armed forces consisted of little more than a handful of lightly armed former guerilla fighters. Ranged against it were some of the most powerful nations in the Arab world, including Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.
On the day after the declaration of the creation of Israel, four armies from these neighboring states launched an invasion. The invading armies had tanks, combat aircraft, and heavy artillery. The Israel Defense Force lacked all these things; its forces were outnumbered and had barely enough rifles to equip its troops. No wonder that some Arab generals told their leaders that this wouldn’t be a war but a “parade without any risks.” Most people predicted that Israel would be defeated within two weeks.
But that wasn’t how it turned out. Israel not only survived its first war—it emerged stronger and with armed forces that proved themselves to be among the most capable in the world. This is the surprising story of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

Because Hourly History promises a short, concise explanation of its subject, it takes less than two hours to read. This is a quick look at the events leading up to the formation of the nation of Israel and the war that convened almost immediately after its formation.
Bless Hourly History for an excellent region map, but we could have used it earlier in the book. This is an overview of the conflict, with considerable analysis. I thought it was balanced. Because they covered a lot of information in a short time, showing what and why things happened. Then, they talk about the effects that carry to the present. Finally, readers can access the bibliography for more information.
Concise presentation of the existence of tree State of Israel
The author describes a highly possible scenario as to how a nascent country was able to ward off four armies with supposedly superior materiel and wind up victorious. Thus setting the stage for Israel to become the dominant economic and military presence in the area.
Prior to reading this, I knew very little about the formation of present day Israel. This Hourly History states the issues very clearly. It is very apparent that this conflict will continue due to the distrust and hatred between all parties.
A canter through the 48 war and successive events up to the October 23 Ha Hamas attack, excellent impartial summary and a valid explanation of why the failure to conclude a fair peace with the Palestinian population has led to the current war in Gaza.
A short quick Read on the Israeli War of Indepence
I found this short book a compelling summary of the Israeli War of Independence with tactics and points of view in the Arab-Israeli Conflict adequately presented.
This is one of several in a series of Hourly History books providing an excellent overview of the Arab-Israeli conflicts through the decades. As a history buff, these books are spot-on in their accuracy in detailing the struggles each side are trying to achieve.
This is a quick, accurate and balanced history of a very troubled part of the world. It covers the war from a high level but gives details when they are critical to the history. I enjoyed it and learned a lot too.
This book brings the facts and information on how the country of Israel was established after conflict with its neighboring Arab countries of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.
This book gave more information and insight into the battles fought and the far reaching consequences of both winners and losers… 🪖 Excellent 🔥 Read 🧞♀️🙂
A good overview of the beginning of the Israel Arab conflict that continues to have ramifications into today. Presented in a very easy to understand manner.
Although I'm pro-Israel the book struck me as not balanced, a bit too pro-Israel. Information about Arab Israelis who stayed would be a good addition. On the other hand, there's lots of good information, details of the battles. I didn't realize the '48 war lasted as long as it did. Overall a good short read to start the way into material with more depth. And I didn't understand the use of the quotes at the top of each chapter as they were never supported by the text.
