Camille Divine Murder Mystery #8

The Westminster Murders

Rate this book
NEW YEAR 1925In the smoke-filled parlours and dimly lit corridors of 1920s London, political intrigue and whispers of scandal grip the Palace of Westminster. When a respected Member of Parliament is discovered hanging in his office, the echoes of his last moments reverberate through the grand halls. Knolly and Aaron Kaplan find the hanged body of Jeremy Styles and are equally shocked and devastated. This was not how their much anticipated visit to The Houses of Parliament was meant to draw to a close.

Chief Inspector Richard Owen, a man with a mind as sharp as his impeccably tailored suits, takes charge of the investigation. Yet, sensing the labyrinth of political webs at play, he seeks an unusual ally—Camille, a woman with an insider's view into the secretive world of Parliament, courtesy of her estranged husband, Lord Henry Divine.

As Camille navigates the complexities of privilege and power, the team delves into a realm where loyalty is a commodity and secrets are the currency of survival. The question looms Was it a desperate act of self-destruction, or is there a more sinister force manipulating the strings behind the velvet curtains of Westminster?

In "The Westminster Murders," alliances will be tested, scandals will surface, and the line between politics and personal vendettas will blur. As the clock ticks, Camille and her unlikely comrades must unravel a web of deceit before the halls of power claim another victim. Will they unveil the truth, or will the shadows of political machinations shroud the real killer forever? Step into the world where whispers carry as much weight as a well-tailored suit, and every secret has its price.

A good read

The plots are very good and the criminals not who you would expect. The characters are most loveable too. I missed Elsie West in this latest book.

But, the books could do with a proper proofing before they are published. Too many missed words and the odd mistake in a name. What is more, someone needs to go back to learn maths. In this latest book Camille is about to turn 30 and has a 14 year old daughter. But she did not meet the father of her child until she was 17. Lady Camille is also half African and yet had no problems being admitted into New York clubs nor does she experience any issues in London. Back then she would never have enjoyed the wide social acceptance this book suggests. And as for her daughter loving boarding school and the girls being so lovely, mmmm, that does not ring true either.

This is the 8th book in a delightful series, and these characters and their stories have only gotten better and better. The mysteries in this book are perplexing, but the Chief Inspector manages to put all the pieces together quite neatly. I appreciate that while Camille and Cecily assist throughout that it is Richard who sees the full picture. There is sometimes a tendency to make the police seem superfluous, at best, to solving crimes in cozies. I am so glad that Ms. Hicks avoids that trope. It does appear that changes are on the horizon for Camille, Cecily, Richard, Nolly, Ottilie, and the other characters who readers have come to know and love, but I trust they will be good ones, as well as exciting. I cannot wait for the next book to release in audio.

The narrator does an excellent job voicing these characters.

Mrs Knowles, Camille Divine's cook pays a visit to the Houses of Parliament when her friend Mrs Sims, who is one of the tea ladies, invites her to see where she works. Knolly, along with Aaron Kaplan goes along with the tea round where they find that one of the MPs has died, in less than normal circumstances. Camille is also visiting that afternoon having accompanied her friend, Elsie West, to see Elsie's friend put forward his bill for discussion in the house. On seeing Knolly and Aaron and hearing what has happened, Camille and Elsie quickly become involved. But who would want to murder an unassuming, mild-mannered man (even one who is an MP)?

Truly a wonderful series

Every time a new Camille Devine book comes out, I know I will have hours
to spend with Camilla and Richard.

Over the period of the eight books, Camilla, Richard, Cecily and the whole crew
have become regular visitors to my home and I have greatly welcomed
the visits.

I highly recommend these works of Andrea Hicks, and I look forward to following
their lives together and their adventures.

Andrea Hicks writes a cracking good mystery. This one might just be my favorite yet.

A member of Parliament has been murdered, and the killer has tried to make it look like suicide. Then, the secretary to the first victim is murdered. But are the two killings connected?

Andrea Hicks is wonderful at using twists and turns, so you keep reading. I could not put this one down.

Lady Camille, Richard and their team really have their hands full with this one. I highly recommend it.

A Wicked Witch and Her Flying Monkeys?

A good book with a lot of action. A milquetoast MP who finally found a passion and his secretary are both found murdered in the office on separate days. The MP's wife is a nasty, cruel, and devilish woman who controls everyone and everything. The suffrage movement are also a big part of the story.

A most entertaining series. I have read the other books in order and realize that the next book in the series is the last one that has been published. Thank goodness I have my pre-order in for the newest book and will look forward to reading it and seeing what is happening with the crew.

WOW

Amazing read. Kept me going from first to last page. Deep, sometimes dark stories. This was certainly one of those. I already have the next one. In the series. Next on my list!
