Empires Of The Sea: A Human History of the Indian Ocean World

Rate this book
An enthralling journey through 2,000 years of India’s steadfast relations with the seas.

The Indian Ocean world’s significance in human history is impossible to dismiss. The 1,000-odd kilometres of the subcontinent’s coastline – which underpinned some of the world’s greatest empires and shaped countless human lives – therefore make for the perfect dock from which to embark on a journey through the centuries for a vital reappraisal of India’s history.

In this eye-opening book, noted historian Radhika Seshan sets out to map our age-old connections with the seas, tracing maritime linkages from the Harappan period all the way to the long colonial era. Her re-examination of India’s past through the prism of water reveals the extent to which this conduit enabled trade and the movement of people, often leading to the establishment of crucial ports, communities, kingdoms and empires. The Chola, Chalukya and Vijayanagar empires, historic ports such as Muziris and Bharuch and accounts of travellers, explorers, merchants and monarchs who frequented India’s shores are explored here in vivid detail, with the sea providing a riveting backdrop of adventure, migration, invasion and rich cultural networks. While the arrival of the Europeans, the subsequent Raj and their consolidation of terrestrial networks marked the gradual decline of our maritime dominance, the seas hold sway over our geopolitics even today.

Combining scholarly rigour with a storyteller’s flair, Empires of the Sea presents India afresh as a nation of pluralities made possible by virtue of its long-standing maritime relations with the world at large.

As a history nerd, this book was a gem for me. There are many books that trace the history of India but few talk about our ancient knowledge of traversing the waters and the impact we had on maritime trade and our importance in this whole affair. To know that there is a 'sea' knowledge about the ocean and its ties to people has inspired me to research more into it.

Radhika Seshan's Empires of the Sea is an absolutely captivating book. The theme itself is unique and fascinating—it explores "a human history of the Indian Ocean," and the focus on the human element immediately drew me in. Radhika masterfully chronicles every major maritime event tied to this ocean, the only one in the world named after a country (India, of course!).

Her writing is refreshingly direct and unpretentious, yet peppered with enough wit to keep readers thoroughly engaged. If you’re someone who enjoys historical anecdotes about ports, trade, and seafaring empires, this book delivers in-depth insights into the operations, triumphs, and enduring legacies of these maritime powers. The detailed exploration of ports and ships was especially fascinating for me, as it really brought the history of the Indian Ocean to life.

The prose flows smoothly—almost in the manner of the ocean itself—and kept me hooked from beginning to end. I finished it within a week!

This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in maritime history, or even anyone who likes quirky, thought-provoking historical narratives. This is a gem you won't want to miss!

As someone who works very closely with the sea (Fisheries), this book was an autobuy. And it served!

Empires of the Sea by Radhika Seshan is such an aweinspiring read. Even the theme is so spectacular and specifi, I am in love. So the book calls itself ' a human history of the Indian Ocean' and the human part of this title intrigued me. And Radhika wrote specacularly about EVERY MAJOR maritime movement in the history of the singular ocean named after a country (ours). Radhika's writing is lovely and straight to the point without any fuss but witty enough to keep you engaged and entertained. Personally I love historical port references and Empires of the sea dwelves into great depth (no pun intended) about the workings, the glory and the obvious legacies of historical empires in and around the Indian Ocean, their ports and ships and everything in between. The language is fluid and dynamic (like the Indian Ocean). I read in a week!

This was an epic read! And anyone who has a knack for reading about historical events of the Maritime nature, or anything weirdly interesting even, then they must read this book
