Gourmet grudges, Thanksgiving thievery, and a feast of foul play…
The quaint town of Hummings Hollow is famed for its festive Thanksgiving celebrations, but this year, the holiday menu is marred by a serving of murder. Celebrity chef Griffith Wille's unexpected death under suspicious circumstances during a televised cooking competition leaves everyone in shock. To make matters more complicated, a series of mysterious cookbook thefts are occurring all over town. Could these culinary capers be linked to the chef's untimely demise?
Angela senses something sinister simmering beneath the surface. To unmask the killer, she steps into the heat of the kitchen as a last-minute entry, going undercover as a contestant.
As she kneads through layers of culinary chaos, she discovers a bitter rivalry with his protégé turned rival, who seems all too pleased with Griffith's demise. But are these kitchen wars masking a darker secret?
As Angela and Ruff stir the pot, they find that some ingredients are best left unturned.
Turkey Trot Trouble is the eighth book in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries series. If you adore intriguing cozy mysteries with beautiful small towns and a really adorable dog, then you won’t want to miss out on Angela and Ruff's fun and unforgettable cases.
MAX PARROTT is a cozy mystery author who lives with his beloved golden retriever... who just so happens to be named Luffy. Even though Luffy doesn't help Max solve crimes, he does help him stay amused.
The inseparable duo often enjoy big long walks down the canal where Max reminisces about Luffy's one shot at fame - a close second in Musical Chairs for dogs one wintry Christmas Eve.
As much as I enjoy the mysteries in this series, the thing that keeps bringing me back is the human, family side of Angela. Her mother has early onset dementia and although it's sort of a lurking beneath the surface aspect of the story, it showcases the love and togetherness of Angela's family, which now seems to largely include teacher boyfriend David. Having dealt with dementia in the family, it makes Angela seem not just all the more real but anchors the story in reality. Yes, there are adorable, personable critters, most notably Ruff, the border collie sidekick who hates wearing his service animal vest, but Angela would drop everything in a heartbeat to be with family and it's a lovely trait to have. She also works closely with the police, not always true in cozy mysteries, even when the main character is romantically involved with a detective or police officer. In other words, Angela and her family are characters we can all relate to as humans, not just virtual characters we drop in on each new book.
As for the mystery, yikes. A star chef is murdered on camera....sorta. Who'd want to kill hometown guy made good? As it turns out, there are several different suspects. There are also family issues that arise and, huh, missing/stolen cookbooks? Fortunately, besides David, also a huge help with the critters, and family, Angela has very human backup, a reporter/editor friend who is as good as, if not better than Angela at computer searches. I was a bit disappointed to see Ruff, with his very human thoughts throughout, rather sidelined this go-round but I'm sure he'll be back in action next book. Hey, someone has to stay home and keep an eye on Eggatha and her escape artist chick, now grown, Indy, named after Indiana Jones. Now, if someone could just teach Angela to make a good pie.
Bottom line, a fun, easy read that I pretty much devoured in one day. I'm trying hard not to get hung up on taking notes, so I'm sure I've left out stuff but, hey, you'll find out all about the cooking contest, wayward turkeys, close knit family, and, hey, even some growing romance. Lots to enjoy and I always find myself wondering what Angela will manage to do to wind up in the hospital next time. Thanks #BookSirens and author #MaxParrott for letting me have this sneak peek into Angela's world again. My dog Daisy sends Ruff a tail wag.
I really liked this mystery series because of the close knit family dynamics. Angela is close to her family with her father being a retired police chief and her mother having early on set dementia. Angela is willing to drop everything so that she can be at her parents side if they need her. I also like, Angela as a Private Investigator, is able to work closely with the police force in Hummings Hollow to help solve crimes which is different from most cozy mysteries that I have read. Angela seems to live on a farm with lots of animals that she takes care of on a daily basis along with her boyfriend and school teacher, David. She also has her dog, Ruff, that tags along with her while she is working who I thought would have a bigger roll and seems to in other books in the series.
Hummings Hollow is scheduled to hold the Great Gobbler Cook-Off leading up to Thanksgiving. As for the mystery, a star chef is murdered on camera….or so they think. The camera footage is gone and while they are trying to recover the video, they are also trying to solve who did it. As it turns out, there are several different suspects. There is also the case of missing/stolen cookbooks? Fortunately, besides David and the police force, Angela has backup, a reporter/editor friend who is as good as, if not better than Angela at computer searches. Now, if someone could just teach Angela to make a good pie. To help pin down the murderer, Angela goes undercover in the baking show. This could be a problem though because while Angela is a good cook, she is not all that great at baking. I highly recommend this book/series. Thanks #BookSirens and author #MaxParrott for letting me have this sneak peek into Angela's world.
This 8th book in the Ruff McPaw mystery series is so much fun to read, trying to follow the clues in hopes of solving the mystery along with our wonderful and very likeable protagonist, PI Angela with her best friend and local journalist, Michelle and of course her teacher boyfriend, Dave who is very supportive of Angela. Add to that we have Angela's very close family, her father being a retired policeman and her mother starting to suffer the begin stages of dementia. In this book we have Griffith’s Great Gobbler Cook-off being held in Hummings Hollow, chef Griffith's hometown and it's being filmed. Also in attendance is Gordon Haynes, a very famous food critic and not exactly a fan of Griffith. When Griffith is found dead in the kitchen behind the stage before the competition. Of course, Angela has to get involved and help Chief Helbar solve the murder. Now we are taken on a roller coaster ride through clue and misclue and lots of red-herrings and dead ends. With a little humor thrown in and the wonderful and intuitive side kick, Border Collie, Ruff McPaw and his thoughts on the case throughout, we are treated to a wonderful addition to the entire series. I highly recommend this series and this book is a great addition. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Hummings Hollow is scheduled to hold the Great Gobbler Cook-Off leading up to Thanksgiving. In attendance for the event is the celebrity chef, Griffith Wille. Competition for the event is expected to be strong, but before the event even starts, Griffith is found stabbed to dead. Afraid of bad publicity, the mayor and network agree to keep the cause of death quiet for a while. Angela learns about the death from her friend, Michelle Blackstone, who publishes the local newspaper. Angela heads to the staging area to find Chief Helbar to see if he has any additional information. Griffith seemed to have had a swift rise to fame, but created some enemies along the way. Gordon Hayes was a reviewer of restaurants and always gave Griffith's establishments negative reviews. Griffith's publicity manager, Lily Evans, says her job was to curtail any bad publicity. Another interesting aspect of the case involves the theft of vintage cookbooks in the area. Unfortunately, every new lead seems to result in a dead end.
Who killed Griffith? Why was he killed? Are the cookbook thefts related to Griffith's death? If so, what is the connection? Can Angela sort through the lies and clues to expose the killer?
Max Parrott has created another great Ruff McPaw mystery. The story includes plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged clear to the end.
Unfortunately, this book is like the one previous to it. It is riddled with errors and not just just minor errors. They were glaring, enough so to take me out of the story.
A cooking show has come to town and many events start to take place, first of which is the head chef on a cooking show has been killed. Angela and Ruff must work hard to discover who killed him with basically zero clues.
I felt this story could have been better written by a teenager. I honestly can't figure out what has happened to the good story telling of earlier books. There are words in sentences that are very obviously NOT correct for the sentence at all. It's like Max Parrott isn't even trying. I had to skim thru most of this book and by 80%, I actually hadn't missed anything!
Max, you can do better. It's like you're sleeping while you're writing. Crikey.
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my voluntary review.
Another great book by Max Parrot, with my favorite characters Angela, her boyfriend David, and her border collie Ruff McPaw, “ her best friend and dog-in-crime”, as she calls him. It’s time for Griffith’s Great Gobbler Cook-off in his hometown of Hummings Hollow and this year it’s being filmed. Especially since Gordon Haynes, one of the most famous food critics ever, is attending. When Griffith is murdered before the competition could even get underway! Angela’s best friend and reporter, Michelle, calls her to alert her, and she and Ruff are in the job! Of course, Chief Helbar is not excited, although they have worked successful to solve cases before. As usual, I really enjoyed this book, which I received a free advance copy of, and write this review voluntarily.
This involves much more than cooking. Several people have agendas and plan to accomplish them in one manner or form under the guise of the cooking contest. Things keep delaying the show, and Angela, her dog, her dad, and the police are trying to follow the threads that could lead to the killer. I liked seeing the collaborative efforts of several people helping to solve the case.
Who to trust , and who to watch when you turn your back??? The secrets do come out!!! I Iiked how the author included dementia/alzheimer in the storyline to represent current situations. I voluntarily read a free copy of this provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
Working as a Private Investigator certainly keeps Angela and her faithful dog Ruff busy. With Thanksgiving coming up, Hollywood has brought a famous chef and cookbook author and his Great Gobbler Cook Off to town for a live show leading up to the big day. Unfortunately, on the first day of the cook off, he is found dead on the set with a knife sticking out of his chest. Angela is determined to help the police chief find the killer as soon as possible even if she places herself in danger. With all the twists and turns, will they find the killer before Thanksgiving? Wonderful characters and some very adorable animals too! For anyone dealing with a loved one with dementia this book will touch your heart with the encouragement that you’re not alone. Kudos to Max Parrott!
A bake-off, a mother slipping into dementia and a murder has Angela busily working to help her father as well as taking care of her business. When a master chef is found dead at a cook-off, Chief Helber asks local PI, Angela to quietly investigate the death. As a dedicated private investigator, Angela uses all her skills to find the killer while quietly worrying about her mother. This is a terrific series, always with a well thought out mystery, as well as gently featuring a woman with early onset dementia who is loved and cared for by a loving husband and family. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
A very foodie-oriented mystery with one of my fave duos of Ruff and Angela. I kept changing my mind about whodunit, but I loved how Chief Helbar and Angela got their proof, then they had their showdown. Gotcha, perp!
The ending was fun with the whole Atkinson family and David gathered for Thanksgiving. There must be something about dads being the ones notorious for either being messy at the table or sneaking food to dogs because I had to laugh at Ruff being stationed by Charlie. Oh and Will’s toast was the best! And Angela’s little food secret too! Can’t wait to read the next book when it’s out.
This is the first book I have read in the Ruff McPaw series. But I enjoyed it so much that I will be going back and reading the first 7 books as well as purchasing any future books released. This story had me scratching my head as the twists and turns and clues were scattered throughout the pages. The characters are well developed and the relationships among them are endearing. Angela is a wonderful individual and the fact that she appreciates family more than anything else is admirable. And then when you factor in Ruff, her border collie, and his attempts to assist in solving the murder mystery, you are in for a treat. Another fun part of the story were the names of the critters on the farm ... Eggatha, for example. Lots of laughter is found as you flip quickly through the pages trying to solve the mystery. I can’t wait to experience another adventure with Angela and Ruff McPaw!
Thank you to Book Sirens and the author for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
In this adventure, Angela and her dog Ruff are dealing with a murder committed in the backstage of a reality tv show. It's Thanksgiving and Hummings Hollow is receiving Griffith's 10th Annual Gobbler Cook, a culinary competition hosted by a famous chef.
As there are a lot of suspects in a closed setting, the story takes the murder mystery vibe of the classic whodunits.
I loved the setting of the great chefs, the valuable old books and of course Angela's family and adorable Ruff. This book was my favorite of this series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Turkey Trot Trouble: A Cozy Animal Mystery is book #8 in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries series by Max Parrott.
There is a televised cooking competition planned for Thanksgiving time viewing. Unfortunately, a celebrity chef is killed at the beginning, which puts the show in jeopardy. It was an interesting mystery figuring out who the killer was and why, but my favorite part of the series is the characters. I really like Angela and Ruff and the closeness that Angela has with family and friends. That’s what makes the series a must-read for me. I love Ruff’s thoughts - if only Angela could hear him!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love this series! It could be you next door neighbor, it is so comfortable and you feel like you are part of the group. Love, love, love Ruff - he is wonderful. Another great mystery, Angela finds herself in a cooking competition to find out who the murderer is, the whole crew is involved. Great background story of Angela's parents, dealing with retirement, starting dementia and just the every day life in a family. I will definitely continue with these books, as long as they are written! You won't be sorry, start with the first and go crazy!
A dead celebrity chef, stolen antique cookbooks, Angela can't bake. How is Angela going to solve either the murder of the theft? Or are they related? Max is such a happy go lucky pup, until Angela puts on his fake service dog vest. He doesn't like wearing it because according to him he's not a service dog. Come read this easy to read as the story flows so well. Everyone knows that the stories are fantastic but they really read for Ruff McPaw.
I received an ARC copy of this book and volunteered a honest review.
4.5 stars! The "Turkey Trot" cooking competition will be filmed in Hummings Hollow! Great for the tourist industry - except the head critic gets murdered. All eyes are on the town and the cooking show, and police chief Helbar is happy for PI Angela's help, along with her dog Ruff, since the security camera suddenly has a big blank at the crucial time. This is another fun tale with lots of twists and dead ends, as Angela masquerades as a cook to finally find the murderer! - I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review.
Turkey Trot Troubles was my first book from this author. I picked it because I love fall, holidays, pets and cozy murder mysteries. And I’m glad I picked it, as it was a quit enjoyable read. The characters were all likeable. Angela and her dog Ruff are a cute team. I really liked the storyline & storytelling. The book spread some holiday (thanksgiving) vibes which I liked but not so much that you can‘t read it any time of the year.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you for allowing me to read this book.
I really enjoy these Ruff McPaw mysteries. They are light, easy to read, and have great characters. The mysteries are awesome, too. It's not easy to keep avid mystery readers guessing, but I am surprised again & again by the culprits in these books! Max Parrott does a wonderful job putting out the clues and then misleading the reader until that final corner, when you turn the page and wham! there's the culprit! And it all comes together. Definitely read any of these if you love cozy mysteries!
I love this series! It's fun, well written, likeable characters, with an adorable dog, and has a good mystery to solve. There are several potential suspects and I like that Angela works with the local police department to solve the crimes. It's fast paced and a quick read. Plus it showcases Angela's family relationships and her commitment to her rescues animals. It's very entertaining. I received a free copy of this book via BookSirens and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
thoroughly ruined thanksgiving Angela´s talents surely are not in the kitchen and her faithful assistant Ruff literally isn´t able to help her in this area. I was highly amused to read about Angela´s struggles in the culinary sector but it shows there is no lenghts a passionate sleuth wouldn´t go to in order to solve a crime. I just love Max Parrott´s series, the interaction between the protagonist and their dogs always creates a special vibe.
Turkey Trot Trouble is Book 8 in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries by Max Parrott. Angela and Ruff are great characters. I love the animals on her farm. I enjoyed the turkey that kept escaping the butcher. Terrance Turkey did not want to be on the Thanksgiving table! There is a food competition and the chef is murdered. A fun who done it with laughter and mystery equals a wonderful cozy. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
This series gets better and better. With each book, I love Angela, David, Ruff, and all the gang more and more. They are so much fun and so caring for each other. I love how they work to solve each case, no matter how dangerous it could be. This book made me hungry for turkey. I can't wait for the next adventure. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Such an amazing series! Angela and Ruff (her trustworthy dog) make a great team and it is always fun to listen to what Ruff has to say about everything. His talents are, of course, the reasons these murders get solved. In this installment the town is hosting a cooking competition. Major chefs and major egos are involved, and one of them murdered the host. Great twists and turns, blind alleys, and great characters. A great read. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.
Turkey Trot Trouble is a cozy mystery simmering with Thanksgiving charm and canine hijinks. When celebrity chef Griffith Wille is murdered during a cooking show at the town’s Turkey Trot festival, Angela and her loyal dog Ruff McPaw jump into the kitchen to sniff out clues. With gourmet grudges, quirky suspects, and a small town that feels like home, this mystery blends warmth, humor, and a twisty who-done-it you won’t see coming.
Angela and Ruff are back in this delightful addition to the series. This is a very well thought-out mystery. The characters are easy to remember when trying to figure out who done it! There's suspense. Romance. And laugh out loud humor! I had narrowed it down to three but it kept me guessing right till the end! Can't wait for the next book!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a further disclaimer I have not read any of the previous books in the series.
I did like the book. It was a easy cozy mystery to read. Probably would have rated it higher if I had read the previous books and gotten more of the background on the characters.
This is book 8 in the Ruff McGraw series and an excellent addition. This is a great series with a strong female MC, an awesome dog, other assorted animals, and great mysteries. I love Angela’s commitment to her family and her community. As with the others, this was a lighthearted, fast, easy read. I received this as a free ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I always love the covers of the books in this series and enjoy the well plotted story. The characters are one of the most likeable features and the solid mystery is always gripping and surprising. I liked this story that kept me guessing and having fun. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Love the escaping turkey! Ruff gets to help solve another murder and rescue turkey! Its a good murder mystery. I like how the family comes together to help mom with her illness.
A cookoff, a murder. Angela and Ruff are on the case. This is a sweet, cozy and entertaining quick read. A nice addition to this series I can only recommend. I received an advance review copy for free and I’m leaving a voluntary and honest review.
