Once Upon a Highland Autumn by Lecia Cornwall is a 2014 Avon Impulse publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! This novel was a surprise for me. I see this author has written quite a few books, but this is the first book I have read by Lecia Cornwall. I had no idea what to expect going in, but I found myself totally engrossed in the story.

Lord Kit Rossington discovers an unopened letter and upon reading it finds there is perhaps some valuable treasure to be had in Scotland. So, off he goes in search of it. It never occurs to him the lassies of Scotland would find him so fascinating... all but one... Megan McNabb.

Meagan has one of THOSE mothers, who is all set to have her daughters marry a titled Englishman with a certain amount of wealth. So, despite the fact Megan fancies herself in love with another man, she finds herself being paraded before Lord Kit. The two mix like oil and water.

In the background of this drama is an old legend concerning a curse on the Glen Dorian castle, the very place Kit needs to search for his treasure. It seems the place might be haunted by a woman who waited patiently for years for her lover to return to her from war, but never made it back.

In the meantime Megan and Kit find themselves in an unusual predicament and wind up agreeing to a handfasting, mainly to avoid being pursued by marriage minded ladies and titled Englishmen. A year and a day is all they have to endure and then if they wish the arrangement can be broken. It's a solution that will allow Megan to wait for the man she loves to return to her and will keep Kit from having to marry, something he is loathe to even consider at the moment.

Naturally, things don't go quite the way they had planned....

This was a wonderful tale of history, mystery, a touch of the supernatural and of course romance. Megan is the victim of her time with a mother who could rival Mrs. Bennett. Kit is a man who is ruled by the women in his life whether he admits it or not. His mother and sister for starters. It's no wonder he's in no hurry to marry. But when he meets Megan he finds himself rethinking marriage. The story behind the old castle was so sad and I confess to almost doing the ugly cry at one point. But, in the end the story turned out so sweet and endearing, you just know this was all meant to be.
From the first page to the last the pace was pitch perfect, which sharp dialogue, humor, and irony, with a touch of ghostly magic blended in to put the cherry on the cake.

This one is 5 stars.

Megan McNabb, is desperate to get out of her mothers plan for her. Megan has fallen in love with a man who has left to get his fortune so that they can have a future together. Then Lord Kit Rossington, come to her village, in search of the mystery behind the legend of Glen Dorian Castle. Kit, is intrigued with the curse surrounding the glen, and living in a small run down cottage, he feels more at peace than he has in years. When he meets Megan, he senses are stirred. She is passionate and fierce, and seems to dislike him and any other male that comes across her path. Then she approaches him with a plan, a plan that will help them both. He reluctantly agrees to hand fast with her for a year and a day. What neither Meg or Kit expected was to fall in love within days, but will they be able to discover the secret to breaking the curse of the Glen.

Once Upon A Highland Autumn is the second book in the McNabb family. The first book I really enjoyed, so I was pretty excited to see what would happen in this story. The beginning was steady paced, and this author has a great way of bringing in the reader into her stories. I have been a big fan of Lecia Cornwall, her writing is similar to Sabrina Jeffries and Karen Ranney. She writes compelling romance that win your heart. Once Upon A Highland Autumn was no different. I really loved the plot and layout of the story. There is a sub plot of the story involving the curse of the glen, so we see a bit of historic relevance that relates to the rest of the story.

The characters were fun and easy to love. Kit and Meg were just wonderful together, and what a pair they make. In the beginning they tend to quarrel back and forth, and it is quite amusing. There is tension, but in a good way, you see that they both like each other, but are too proud to admit it. Both Kit and Meg were endearing and the more I got into the story, the more excited I got to see these two really connect fully with each other. There is quite a focus on the mystery of the curse, and I felt like there could have been a strong focus on the relationship. But in all honestly, it was a fun and light read. A winner for a summer read that is for sure. It has everything you might need for a enjoyable and romantic highland romance. A magnificent blend of sensual heat, a mystery to solve, charming characters and a plot that keeps you involved....a gem of a historical romance!! I am excited to read more from this author.

Ah, regency romance. Where the women are expected to be virgins but give it up to the first broad-shouldered man to walk past, and the men expect to marry virgins while having no qualms about sleeping with as many women as they want before marriage.

It is one of the tropes I find the most eye-rollingly aggravating, but the one I just have to let go if I am going to read these books. So, I let it go, but always reserve the right to comment on it!

Megan McNabb is a Scottish woman living outside Iverness. She loves the land, the people, and the history of her clan, especially the well-known curse of two people desperately in love who were separated by Culloden. Legend has it the woman haunts the ruins of her castle.

But, Megan's mother is insistent that her three daughters all marry English lords, and starts preparing them to go to London the next season despite the fact that Megan has told a local boy she will wait for him.

And isn't it convenient when Lord Kit Rossington just happens to show up in the area, desperate to escape all trappings of London society as he is determined to never marry.

I think we see where this is going.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit! Yes, Megan is the stereotypical virgin. And yes, Kit fits his stereotype as well. But, I really liked both of their characters! And their story was interwoven with chapters about the legend of the curse which were short but interesting.

All in all, a pretty great way to cap off my November reads for Fall Flurry!

Cute story. I actually liked the back and forth in time stuff and there was no crazy drama like these books often tend to have. I also liked both the main characters and their relationship felt genuine.

This is a story that takes place in two time periods. The hero, Christopher Linwood, is a descendent of Nicholas Linwood. He finds some personal effects of his great uncle; one of which is a letter that was still sealed. In the letter, the writer, Maire, refers to treasure that she has hidden because the English have invaded the countryside after Culloden. Christopher, Kit, travels to the castle to look for the treasure. He is specifically trying to avoid matchmaking mamas and their debutantes.

The heroine, Megan, is trying to keep from being married off to whomever her mother chooses for her. Her mother is the closest character to a villain in this book with her high-handed attempts to force marriage between Kit and Megan. The two of them do not hit it off at first, mostly because of the mother`s machinations, but later agree to handfast in order to each avoid marriage. The handfast is for a year and a day and they intend to keep their distance from each other to avoid it becoming permanent.

The remainder of the story is the slow tango of the two as they get to know each other and, in the background, we are treated to the events of 1745-46 that lead to the treasure. Two love stories in one. Well, two and a half.

It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s historical, based in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It’s a story of two eras in the same place. It’s light and fluffy, but there’s a cursed castle, a mystery to solve, one or two strong women, and romance between unlikely/likely candidates. There’s an overbearing mother desperately trying to marry off her daughters. The setting is Scotland, the characters wealthy and fond of plaid. In short, it’s just the read I needed between long and factual books.

Great for fans of romances based in the Highlands, with a bit of reflection on the repercussions of British rule.

After reading book 1, I had to start this one immediately. It was another nonstop read. Such great characters. I love this series and will now start book 3. Housework can wait and meals will probably either be a simple sandwich or pizza.

Another book where much could be solved with simple communication. Idk how people ever got married when they clearly never bothered to talk to each other 🙄 at least, that's what romance novels make it seem.

Slow Going

I was disappointed in how slow this story ended up being. I kept wanting to know more than what was given. I'd say it's a decent read but don't expect too much.

In "Once Upon a Highland Autumn" Megan McNabb is in love with the son of one of the local men. He's the one for her and she's waiting for him to return abroad in order for them to marry. In reading the first in the series we know Megan isn't exactly the best one to pick out guys. But she's 19 and in love what does she know. Her conniving mother wants her and her sisters to marry into English aristocracy because that's just how it's done. But Megan has her heart set on her beau and no one else.

Kit, Earl of Rossington has a few issues. He just want some peace and quiet damn it! All of his *ahem* 6 homes are being occupied by relatives and/or children and all the earl wants some some solitude from conniving mamas of the Ton or misses looking for a good match. Dude has some ego for all the women after him and his money. So when he finds a journal of his great uncle and the possibility of an adventure arises in Scotland he jumps at the opportunity to flee. He's hoping that with the invitation of a local older lady he'll learn about the legend of Glen Dorian and hopes to find the hidden treasure. He doesn't count on Megan McNabb being there and thrusted into marriage. They haven't even been properly introduced and her mother is already planning the wedding. Crazy!!! Rather than find it humorous that they instantly say no to the wedding they're sort of annoyed and insulted that they would reject the suit. (I mean really?)

Regardless they aren't crazy about each other, but they sort of become intrigued with one another when they're trapped in the castle. But then someone comes up with the greatest plan ever. They will hand fast for a year and a day to avoid marriage since Kit wants to remain a bachelor for as long as possible and Megan wants to marry her beau. So why not hand fast it solves both their worries until they begin to fall for one another.

But of course they slowly begin to fall for one another while still irritated by each other especially when each thinks the hand fasting is temporary. Megan's beau will return to marry her and he will leave when he finds the treasure.

We're treated to flashbacks to Mairi's story back in 1746 with the battle of Culloden approaching. There were times were I wanted more of her story with Connor and Linwood because unlike the main story there's was intriguing and freight with tension with the upcoming battle and who's taking who's side. Her story is super sad with unrequited love and too bad we didn't get more of that.

When I was nearly the end I kept thinking there's not much depth to the characters. It's all about present events and not so much of who they are as people. I was intrigued more by the premise than the characters and I'm not entirely sure I'll continue with the series. It's fluffy yes, but not enough drama and heartfeltness for me.

I'm not a big romantic novel reader, but the description got me interested.

I loved it, couldn't put it down. Kit and Megan are from different worlds, but have the same problem (being forced into a marriage), and temporarily solve it by handfasting, for a year and a day.

Love romance? Must read.

This story reminds me of my favourite romance movie The Quiet One with Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne. To me that movie has the best cinematic kiss EVER!

Now, this story. There is a sweeping gentility to the story that even falls over the tragic love story that is the foundation for Kit and Megan's story. The author beautifully describes Glen Dorian in all its majesty from youth to death. The glen itself is a lush green bordering a cool loch populated by otters.

Kit is an Englishman, an eligible Englishman, and his mother wants him married. He doesn't.

Megan is a Scotswoman whose mother is desperate to marry her daughter off to a well-to-do earl, duke or king. Megan is learning to become a proper English house wife, and hates it. She also does not want to be married, and have to leave her beautiful Scotland behind.

Glen Dorian is reputed to be haunted but who knows? It might just be the wind, or an odd shadow.

Bring Kit, Megan, and Glen Dorian together and you have the way paved for a lovely romance. There are some funny bits, some cringe-worthy bits, and the lush yet gentle romance that blossoms between two unlikely people.

This is one to read again, and this is an author to watch.

Unlike the first book, in which I HATED the "hero". I absolutely adored Kit the hero in this book.

I loved this book, Megan and Kit are both likable characters. They did not fall in love at first sight or even second sight. They had an instant dislike of each other - but at the same time were physically attracted.

If I had any compliant about this book it would be that I found Megan a bit fickle with her "love".

I won't spoil the book for you by giving details - but there is a hand fasting, a mystery and a treasure. As well as some steamy love scenes and a HEA. There is also lost love, unrequited love and heart break.

You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this book - I wish I hadn't, even reading about Alec in this book annoyed me. But Kit more than makes up for him. If Alec was a quasi-hero then Kit is a mega-hero. Did I mention that I loved him?

I will definitely read Alanna's book.

What can happen if you are an English lord searching for a hidden treasure in the Highlands? Well, plenty! And that's what's so fun about this story.

Two wonderfully complex and determined characters make this story entertaining and laugh out loud delicious.

And I haven't even gotten to the awesome writing and an amazing picture of the highlands that the author does!

Get it! You'll enjoy it!

Lovely Scotland

One gets caught in the drama of preparations for "The Season". Only the lady isn't interested in accepting her mother's choices for her to marry. She has a mind of her own.

This was a really good book! It was a great detailed story from beginning to end, it did not devolve into chapters upon chapters of just kissing even once, and the characters were both interesting and charming! I would read a hundred more books like this, a great historical romance read!
