Another Borders closing $1 special. I was super jazzed when I got it because it's the cheesy manga version of the greatest show of our time aka Gossip Girl. And it really delivers on hilarity. I mean, in the first scene Blair wears a literal crown on her head. And Chuck is always in sunglasses and an ascot. The book would be worth the full price alone for just the little flashback scene of baby Chuck and Blair bonding over being evil. Amazing. As for the storyline, the manga is very much a hodgepodge of the books and the TV show. Tonally, I'd say it's closer to the books and the over-the-top crazy that happened in them. Of course, the relationship between Chuck and Blair is a little closer to the TV show version than the book version. I wish there had been more Serena, although the scene where she and Dan are sitting in Central Park and she is hella crazy bored with him was hilarious and very Serena. Very trashy fun and I'm adding the next volume to my next amazon order.

Nice to see a Gossip Girl graphic novel. Don't really like how there only seems to be people with super-model looks though. Sad that Blair and Serena got dumped. Glad that Serena got together with Nate. Hope Dan and Vanessa get together.

Can't wait to read Gossip Girl: the Manga, volume 2!!!!

This graphic novel was such a fun time! Vanessa is a badass in this one. Too bad the former borrower of this library copy named "Rita"(yes, the fool has written their name in it) decided to blackout some important dialogues 🤬.

As a lover of the TV show, this book made me want the read the novels even more.

.... Stop looking at me that way. I'll admit it, I started watching Gossip Girls on Netflix and I happened to be at the dollar store, and saw this on the shelf... and for a buck, curiosity won out!

As another reviewer said, it's rich white girl problems. No doubt about that. But if you enjoyed the Gossip Girl tv show, there spirit of that is certainly here. In addition, I also enjoyed the art in this book. It was easy to follow and pretty to look at, so that's always important in a graphic novel.

Basically, if I saw the second one sitting at the dollar store, I'd probably grab that out of curiosity as well, because it didn't let me down -- but it's nothing I'll go hunting for in the bookstores.

DNFing at 62 pages. I have seen the show and knew what to expect but wow, it was not what I was expecting and really difficult to follow.

Reason for Reading: This is a Cybils '10 nominee and required reading for me as a graphic novels panelist.

I'm not writing one of my usual reviews for this manga because, I'm sorry to say, I've never said this about a book before, but this was simply "trash". Follow the lives of rich high school students with no adult supervision who party, drink, smoke and sleep with each other as they plan devious revenge against anyone who ticks them off, whether it's their BFF or not. The publisher recommends for Older Teens; in my estimation that would be adult (18,19 and up). If it weren't for the Cybils I wouldn't have read the book in the first place. The title was a good clue, but turn the book over and the picture on the back cover is similar to something from a girlie magazine. And to prove my point on calling the book trash, in my estimation, (I can't believe I'm going to write this) but an example is that one of the girl's mother's gives her boyfriend a bj under a table in a restaurant. The rest of the book is no better. I have not read the books or seen the TV show so cannot make any comparison. The end. One star only because I can't officially give it 0/5.

This Manga is exactly like the t.v show but yet so different. You have all the same characters but a different storyline. It was good and entertaining. The illustrations were really pretty. I really enjoyed it and I will be reading the others.

Where’s Jenny?? She’s the best character. This was very different from the TV show and original book series even though it was obviously more influenced by the TV show. Chuck had a weird childhood backstory. A lot of times the plot was hard to follow. It was like the author took the thumbnail sketches of the characters and made her own story set in New York. Two stars for the art and clothes.

I can't believe I just read this. I also can't believe Gossip Girl has a manga.

Gossip Girl has been notorious about its teenage drama, despite that I did enjoy the tv show a lot. There, the characters actually got some depth and growth especially Blair. This is not really present in this version. I assume the manga is closer to the original books, which I never read. The characters are shallower, their betrayals or cheating on each other have no real weight. In this version the existence of Gossip Girl is not really discussed, it is mostly used as a narrative voice. That is a shame because it was fun in the tv show to keep guessing who it could be. Blair and Serena are the most recognizable, Serena the blond goddess everyone falls for and Blair with her impeccable fashion sense and dark hair. Blair barely gets any depth here, and the others are very one dimensional as well. Chuck is nothing but a creepy guy who wants to take advantage of every woman, Nate has no personality besides being infatuated with Serena. Dan is a creepy writer who dates the girl he has been stalking and then suddenly falls for the best friend. And Vanessa is hinted at for being gay, which was not really a thing in the tv show but hey, good for her?

I am not really a fan of the manhwa style but I got used to this artist after reading the Infernal Devices manga adaptation and found the art pretty nice in this book.

TW: Sexual harassment, stalking, cheating, sexual assault, slut shaming, fatphobia, eating disorders (mention of bulimia), child abuse

Wow, this was such over the top silly fun. The characters are all unlikeable and very terrible. Even down to the character's backstory. I did find it strange that the Blair's friends are only acknowledging that she has a problem with her eating disorder. The same about the lashing out to her mother about her behavior at homecoming from being drunk and doing suggestive behavior at the party. The unexpected surprise was chuck bass. No matter how fucked in the head he is sometimes, I can say one thing. The guy is fucking funny. Bass was the highlight of the story to keep things light from the overdramatization of Blair and Serena's friendship. I find Serena getting things to go her way a little too easy.

The story reimagines the dramas of Manhattan’s elite with a unique, stylized twist. Serena van der Woodsen returns to New York City after a mysterious time away, only to discover that her former best friend, Blair Waldorf, is at the center of a scandal. Serena tries to rebuild her fortune while battling rumors and intrigue from the anonymous gossip blog, Gossip Girl.

In the midst of all this, Dan Humphrey, an aspiring message board writer from the upscale social circle, is drawn into Serena’s turbulent world, and the two develop a complex connection. Meanwhile, bad boy Chuck Bass and dashing Nate Archibald face their own romantic and familial dilemmas.

With traditions, secrets, and complicated relationships, this story explores the dilemmas of fame, love, and friendship, all wrapped up in a modern manga visual that brings a fresh take on the original series.

I finally finished the last few episodes of the tv show again (it’s terrible, I know— but I still love it) and have had this book checked out for months so figured it was about time to get around to it. A slightly different perspective on things but just as dramatic as the tv show and original book series; I enjoyed the changes in plot and flashes of backstory that deviated from the story arcs I already knew.

Overall, I doubt it’ll appeal to those who aren’t already familiar with gossip girl in some format— but as with other iterations, it’s entertaining escapism.

tw: bulimia, bullying, teenage drunkeness

I picked this up cheaply from Half Price Books and I wasn't really expecting much - manga and manhwa adaptations of Western properties tend to not be great in my limited experience. This was pretty much in line with that.

I'm not familiar with HyeKyung Baek's other work, so I can't say this is demonstrative but this is universally kind of ugly, with characters drawn in such a way that they're largely indistinguishable from others. There's a few interesting moments, but not enough to really keep your attention.

I'm in my Gossip Girl era so of course I have to read the mangas too. And I didn't regret it. The storyline is lowkey hilarious, with enough differences from the novels and the show to keep it interesting. The art is also pretty funny, and I enjoy the humour added into the story that way. I'm also invested in the Vanessa+Blair relationship that's getting fleshed out in this series, and the Blair+Dan relationship. I also love this series Chuck. Can't wait to read the next one!

I am not the biggest manga fan so this may not reflect fans of manga. I found this a very strange book. In a way I want to continue to see where it goes, but at the same time I found myself very underwhelmed by the whole book. The way they represented the characters was very juvenile and at times I struggled to follow the story line at all.

I selected this book since it is very popular with our patrons. It may be just the illustration style but I had a hard time telling the characters apart which made the conniving and backstabbing plot twists all the more difficult to follow.

I love Gossip Girl so much but this really falls flat. It throws you into a random situation which makes the entire thing hard to follow. The characters, especially Chuck, act super OOC.

I love gossip girl and found this manga adaption at the library and I enjoyed it a lot. It is different from the show which I liked and it is more funny and silly. I love that we see more of blair and vanessa, something that I didn’t expect. I am excited to read the rest!

Picked this up at the library for the bit of it all. Loved the early 2000s throwback of the style, and yea, I was kind of hooked in the story or whatever...
