This thriller is full of unlikable characters and unbelievable occurrences. Much of the plot is over the top requiring a suspension of belief. The revenge premise of the book pulled me in. I was intrigued by where the story was leading but had a difficult time accepting where it went. It was, however, entertaining and kept me engaged. Thank you Booksprout and Inkubator Books for my copy.
I had really high hopes for this book but it really didn’t go anywhere. There was a twist thrown in at the end which I think was meant to add a shock factor but felt really rushed, last minute and poorly done
The scorned wife, is quite readable. In fact, I read to the end, and I never at any point felt the urge to stop.
The story revolves around Amelia whose husband has just left her for her baby sister. I should also point out that this has been a theme in Amelia’s life. Time and again. The younger sister has stolen her boyfriends. It’s happened with just about every guy she’s ever been with.
It doesn’t help that her mother continuously takes the side of the baby sister. So naturally, Amelia is thrown for a loop when her husband dumps her over the phone telling her he wants to have sex with a younger woman. It is only later at a gathering that she finds out, the younger woman is her own Sister.
But Amelia has reached the end of her rope, and she wants to enact a little revenge. So she hires a poster gorgeous male escort to pose as her new boyfriend. The plan is that they will start appearing at family events together and the younger sister will, of course, feel the need to have him and try to wrench him away from Amelia . Only the male escort will say no, humiliating her sister and giving Amelia the revenge She so desperately wants.
Let me say right here I love the plot. If that had been the whole plot and nothing but the plot, I probably be rating this higher.
Unfortunately, the male escort turns out to be mad as a hatter and wants to be with Amelia for real and begins to stalk her.
By the way, none of this is a spoiler as it’s all in the description of the book
I had a hard time with a lot of aspects of this book. Number one is it had no basis in reality.
The dialogue of the sister made no sense to me. I’m all for a slow burn, but I was very skeptical of the ways in which the younger sister went about, trying to steal the imaginary new boyfriend. She was about as subtle as a tractor and that whole plot did not work for me because I couldn’t believe it.
Then there is Damone, the escort himself. There is nothing that shows that he’s gonna turn out to be a stalker, and it was pretty hard to believe just far how far gone he turned out to be. I really really didn’t believe it.
I think I really would’ve quite like this book if it just stayed the way it was for the first half. I mean who wouldn’t want revenge on a sister who makes their whole life about stealing their sister’s boyfriends and husbands? But the stalker storyline didn’t fit to me, and I wasn’t connected to it at all.
There is also a plot point involving Amelia’s best friend and her neighbor, which didn’t make any sense and seemed utterly preposterous to me. I don’t want to give too much away, but basically.
SPOILERS
Amelia starts having feelings for a guy who lives in her apartment building but she is positive that he’s dating her best friend. At the end of the book she finds out he’s not dating her best friend who by the way she has been temporarily living with.
You mean to tell me that she would not have known from the beginning who her best friend’s boyfriend was? It was so implausible so hard to believe that I just really wasn’t all that happy with how this book turned out or rather, I thought that the first part of it was really good, but it was downhill from there.
Amelia Gray’s husband drops her for her sister and Amelia seeks revenge. The Scorned Wife hires help to get her own back, but it all backfires in the most catastrophic way.
This was quite disappointing. The plot had such promise, but it was poorly executed. It was repetitive, predictable and strangely anti police. Amelia’s family were totally unbelievable with their reactions to events and the ending with her father angered me somewhat with her unwillingness to seek justice against him.
Nevertheless, it was a quick and easy read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my advanced copy.
So there is no surprise as far as who the bad guy is. The lengths he will go is a different story. I was on the edge of my seat. Honestly, it really doesn't pick up until the middle of the book. I really struggled in the beginning. Very good plot. The characters were interesting and great building. Oh and the crazy at the end? Big surprise. Did not see that coming
The characters aren’t just unlikeable, they’re caricatures. I mean…if you’re bad, you’re the worst thing on the face of the planet. And they were all bad.
Our MC is dull. I just can’t see this personality inspiring anything but complete disinterest. Not love, not hate, not obsession, not even a mild friendship. She’s invisible.
I would talk about our villain, but there are a bajillion of them. I’d talk about a love interest, but you can barely see them there.
As for plot? It’s a…lot. There is much muchness here and none of it is logical.
The premise of this book was what made me read it, I mean, a woman seeking revenge after her little sister “stole” her husband? It had me hooked immediately. The twisted relationship between Amelia and Damon was superb, and the amount of suspense throughout the book was great.
This is my first book from this author, and it was full of twists but had a slow start and at some point, there were so many things happening that made it feel a little too much. The storyline is easy to follow through and the way the wish for revenge took an unexpected turn was fantastic.
I didn’t quite connect with any of the main characters and found like Amelia was a bit too much. However, the way the author was able to portrait Damon was impressive and added so much tension to the story.
Overall, it’s a psychological thriller that kept me going until the end, where I got a twist, I wasn’t expecting. I enjoyed it since I felt uneased until the end and couldn’t quite guess what was going to happen.
Thank you, NetGalley & the publisher, for approving me to read this arc and write this review.
Let’s start with the one pro: this book’s storyline was pretty different from what I had read before! I did not read the back matter / description before picking it up.. however, if I had, then it would have essentially given all the information about this book away & I wouldn’t have even needed to read it in the first place! I know that books are meant to be a bit unbelievable but this really took the cake. Some chapters felt unnecessary & drawn out + It was hard to get through, I wanted to DNF but decided to keep going since I was already 50% of the way through. Overall, a quick read. Wouldn’t recommend to anybody though.
Let me just say I usually love Theo Baxter‘s books and this one sounded amazing not just that I don’t review books on punctuation or technical aspects but on Weather I was entertained and so it takes a lot for me to not like a book and I can honestly say I felt like I was reading a book for special people. The name character Amelia was married for 10 years to Sam and he left her for a younger woman who she finds out is her sister and she doesn’t find this out until she shows up at her own birthday party and her sister Keira is there with him. Her parents are both checked out her father says nothing and her mom is an alcoholic who blames her for not being able to keep a man these are the same parents that support her life entirely except for the few paintings she sells online. This is why she engages the services of an actor and escort Damien he is the perfect guy the perfect gentleman and The perfect one to get revenge and rebuff Kira when she throws herself inevitably at him. At the family Christmas party Amelia is excited when Damien does just that and her ex-husband being broken up with at the party is just a cherry on top the cake. So nice job thanks for your service it was nice knowing you but no Damien is now in love with Amelia and wants more and refuses it take no for an answer. The first half of this book it’s like a very bad romcom and the second part is a little better but doesn’t at all save the book I do believe I sprained my eyes by rolling them so much while reading this book. A lot of Theo Baxter‘s books or sprinkled with a little bit of ridiculousness but just enough to make it a fun thriller and an awesome read but this one just jumped the gun, the shark the couch ETC it was just too much it will not stop me from reading his books because I do enjoy a good Theo Baxter book every now and then but I cannot recommend this one. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
The scorned wife by Theo Baxter. Damon is handsome, charming, intelligent. But he does have one little flaw… Amelia was deeply in love with her husband, Sam. Until she discovered he was having an affair with her younger sister, Cara. Ever since, Amelia has had to sit by at family events while her sister and ex-husband flaunt their passionate relationship. Tired of being seen as a loser, Amelia hires stunningly handsome actor, Damon Chase, to stand in as her boyfriend. A plan that works better than she ever hoped as pathologically competitive Cara throws herself at Damon, causing an acrimonious breakup with Sam. I really enjoyed this book. This is the 4th book by this author that ive read. I have really enjoyed his books. Gripping and twisty. I didn't like Cara at all. I did feel for Amelia. Couldn't put it down. I was surprised as I didn't expect that. I really didn't like Sam at all. For how he treated Amelia. I did like the ending. 4*.
Amelia is surprised by a divorce although her marriage was not so good in the last few years. She has strained relations with her family which will only escalate as the story progresses. To make things even more confusing the person she thought was going to help her transforms into her worst nightmare. The Scorned Wife is fast-paced and keeps the reader at the edge of their seat.

I love a quick and dirty popcorn thriller (I mean this in a good way!). A sister steals her older sister's husband and now the jilted sister wants revenge... Juicy premise!
Unfortunately the book didn't work for me. The characters are superficial, bland and all over the place. There were no heroines/heros or villians to me as everyone was just blah and did not have distinctive voices. There is also a lot of repetition in the book. How many times are we going to talk about Damon's texts, that Mark has dogs! and listen to another nearly identicial call with Amelia's mum ? This really slowed down the pace of the book for me until it was a push to get to the end.
Great premise, but this wasn't the book for me. This is my personal reading experience and I always encourage people to consider different POVs when they're looking for a new read.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the gifted arc.
I will start by saying that overall, I did enjoy the storyline. I felt that the first part of the book was a slow burn, but the last part picked up, and ended up being really good. I have read a couple of other books by this author, and I did enjoy those a little more than this book, but I still thought this one was interesting.
This book had a lot of suspense and twists and turns. A woman hires an escort to get revenge on her sister and things don’t turn out as she planned. Very good book, this author knows how to keep one’s attention.
I had such high hopes for this book as I’d read great reviews. Sadly it was very predictable, nothing actually happens and there were no twists - certainly not a thriller. It was well written but the story line was lacking.
This book had an interesting premise. The blurb made it seem like a title that I would enjoy.
Amelia suffers a bad divorce from her husband after 10 years of marriage. On her birthday, Amelia shows up to her parents' home to find her little sister and ex-husband climbing down each other's throats. Cara has always taken Amelia's boyfriends but this is the last straw. Amelia decides to hire an escort to accompany her to her family's Christmas party and reject her sister's advances. This plan works out perfectly, except her escort, Damon, decides he wants more and won't take no for an answer.
The book itself was fine. It started off slowly, but the pace did pick up. Many of the aspects of the story were a little too unbelievable. The characters were a little too stereotypical.
My biggest issue with the book were the characters. None of the main characters were likable, nor did they have any redeeming qualities. The main female protagonist, Amelia, was so selfish and utterly spoiled. Amelia is constantly complaining that her family treats her like trash (they do), but she does nothing to help herself. She puts up with the abuse because she has financially bound herself to them (even while she was married) and is too self important to do anything to change her own circumstances. Amelia also, constantly makes the most outlandish decisions that put life and the lives of her friends and family in danger.
Amelia's family is cruel to her in an extreme way but continue to pay for her entire life. She only holds worth to them when she is in a relationship. Her mother is an alcoholic who belittles her constantly. Example conversation between her mother and her: “You were so, so close. You actually had the perfect boyfriend for once. And you couldn’t even hold onto one, just one decent relationship in your life.” “Mom! Listen to me!” “I tried. I really did. Now I have to spend the rest of my life paying for a totally useless daughter. And I’m never going to get anything out of it. You just… You just can’t do anything!”
Her little sister, Cara, hates her and does everything (and everyone) she can to make Amelia miserable. Amelia's father is despondent and absent.
There is a twist toward the end, but I didn't really feel like it was related. It may explain some of Cara's actions towards her but really held no significant value to the story.
This book would have been better with more character development or at least likeable characters. I didn't like Amelia or her family so I was never invested in their predicaments.
I was just waiting for the moment the story goes from alright to great. Never happened. Fell flat although I feel it shouldn’t have … the idea and story was there.
Amelia is newly divorced from her love rat ex-husband after heats with her sister! Talk about toxic families, poor Amelia has the worst! She hires Damon to act as her perfect boyfriend to make herself seem less pathetic and to make her sister jealous. But things backfire and Damon is more than he seems. An addictive thriller that was a little too far fetched to be believable at times. I enjoyed it all the same.
This story was most ridiculous! The beginning was interesting but developed into a stupid and farfetched nonsense. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Huge disappointment.
I got to chapter 5 and called it quits. The premise of this book was soooo good. A woman’s husband leaves her for her sister and she has to watch their relationship play out?! Come on, what a salacious, juicy story! It had so much potential! But the writing was honestly awful. There’s such thing as giving too much information and telling us every long winded thought in the main character’s head is absolutely too much information.
I wanted to like it, I really did, and maybe it gets better towards the end but I’m a firm believer that if a book hasn’t truly hooked me in in the first 50 pages, it’s not worth my time. Sadly it’s the latest edition in my DNF pile!
What an incredibly tense read. I enjoyed this book alot, it had me immersed into Amelias life and the plot. Damon was an intriguing character, and I liked him until I didn't.. I felt so much for Amelia. She just seemed so alone in it all except for Wendy and Mark. And Cara and her parents.. well, they were absolutely horrendous people! Honestly, if you want a seriously tense read that will have you lost in the story, give this one a go.
Thank you to @zooloosbooktours for my place in the tour and my copy of The Scorned Wife by Theo Baxter. Given in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
First of all I loved the cover, the colours and graphics caught my eye and tempted me to want to read this book.
The Scorned Wife has an intriguing story line though no particularly likeable characters. What would you do if your little sister stole your boyfriends in the past and now has stolen your husband? This is the situation Amelia finds herself in and she decides to teach her sister a lesson and get her revenge at the same time.
Enter handsome Damon, the perfect stand in boyfriend who only has eyes for Amelia. That’s when the problems start. Damon wants to be the real thing not a stand in.
I loved the premise of The Scorned Wife. The way Damon pulls Amelia from a joyful revenge to a terrifying nightmare. A enjoyable story that keeps the reader hooked.
This is maybe the 5th book that I've read by this author now and I have to say that I've really enjoyed them all! I love psychological thrillers and so don't think that you can go wrong with this authors work! The writing style is always engaging and keeps you gripped from start to finish.
I did find with this book that although I raced through the first part of the book, I wasn't as gripped by the remainder. I cnt really put my finger on why - maybe it was just my reading mood this time - but I just felt the pace take a step back.
I really liked Amelia as a main character and watching the dynamics between her and the family - especially Cara, her sister!, was quite interesting. Cara was such a horrible person, taking siblings rivalry to a whole new level!
I liked how the storyline switched. I had been expecting it to continue to just be about the relationship the sisters had throughout the book - but to throw in the stalking aspect really threw me off in a whole new direction, which I thought was brilliant.
As ever, this was a really enjoyable read - I just didn't quite love it as much as some of Baxter's other books that I've read - I'll be off to try another one soon though .....
- she’s in her mid 30s and lives off her rich parents - she knows the above is less than ideal but is unwilling to become independent. She puts up with her abusive family for money. - she knew her husband was cheating and did nothing - she uses her nice neighbor. He does a bunch of stuff for her (like grocery shopping) because she’s too pathetic to leave her apartment (she unemployed too). And this isn’t for like a week, it’s for MONTHS - she hates the police, calling them a “necessary evil,” and yet spends the second half of the book calling/talking to the police and being annoyed they don’t do everything for her
Yet, despite these very unattractive characteristics, she inspires two stalkers (her ex and Damon). How? She’s supposedly not super beautiful either.
I would have been thrilled if the FMC shacked up with crazy Damon or if she’d been murdered by him. It would have made for a better book.

I literally forgot I was reading a thriller for the first third of the story. Everything was going so well! I'm 100% with Amelia, get your revenge bestie! And she's such a nice person, she could have done worse and it still would have been justified. But then at that 35-37% point of the story, everything shifts! And I was left gasping in a crowded bus. I can't count how many times the twists were so good I actually was left with my mouth open in surprise. I'm an Amelia stan 100% and she's stronger than me, Damon is hot and cray cray and I still would have been like "I can fix him".
I really do love a good psychological thriller and this one definitely delivered just that!
I must say, some of the scenarios felt a little bit far fetched and unrealistic but I still enjoyed the drama all the same! Amelia was such an interesting main characters and I found myself thinking why the F would you let people treat you like that!? Especially your family! Her family were quite infuriating to say the least… her sister, oh my. Just when I think her family can’t get any worse out comes the shocking revelation at the end of the story… wow. Horrible, horrible people. A very eventful story for sure!
A good, fast paced and fast paced and twisted psychological thriller!
This plot kept me completely hooked throughout! I could not have been more delighted when Amelia got her own back but the delight soon turned to horror as Damon stepped up his efforts to get her for himself. I really felt all the emotions with Amelia and I could have throttled most of her family. The book was very well put together. I would certainly recommend for all lovers of psychological thrillers!
This is the first book I have read by Theo Baxter and not the type of book that I would normally read. I didn't know what to expect, but the blurb and the cover of the book intrigued me. Honestly, I read reviews on other books he has written and almost passed on this one. I am so glad I took a chance to read The Scorned Wife because I personally loved it. Is it realistic...there are some aspects of the storyline that were believable and others that were not, but this is fiction. Books are supposed to be entertaining and fiction is not supposed to be real, but rather a creation of the authors imagination. It is my opinion that Theo did exactly that with his latest book. This story was most definitely original, suspenseful, included plenty of action as well as intense, thrilling moments throughout the story making for an entertaining read.
This is the first time I have read a book where I found myself liking half of the characters while seriously disliking the other half. It is one of the areas of the book that I found to be plausible. In fact what the MFC experienced does happen to people in real life - not necessarily to the same person or to the same extent.
Amelia was the scorned wife and definitely dealt a bad hand. At the same time Amelia was also strong and grew as a person with each struggle she had to face. She was a very kind and loving person who had no problem with loyalty.
Wendy was Amelia's best friend and proved time and time again that Amelia could count on her friendship and loyalty. As well as her generosity and support making sure Amelia knew she never had to face anything alone.
Mark was Amelia's neighbor who lived across the hall from her. He proved his support, loyalty, generosity and willingness to do anything he could for her through his actions.
Detective Corbett was an honorable man who believed Amelia was being stalked and that her life was in serious danger. He wanted to protect Amelia and keep her safe.
Amelia's parents were horrible people who criticized her all of the time. They made it known which daughter was their favorite and felt no remorse. Seriously, her parents had no redeeming qualities.
Sam was Amelia's ex-husband who had no shame in cheating on her while they were married. Sam made it known through his cruel words and actions that he had no problem hurting her. This man had no redeeming qualities.
Cara was Amelia's wicked witch of a sister. She took great pleasure in stealing all of her boyfriends and husband. Cara also made sure to throw it in Amelia's face when possible. This sister had no redeeming qualities what so ever.
Damon was Amelia's handsome fake boyfriend and stalker. He refused to take no for an answer and was absolutely determined to do whatever it took to make Amelia his. He even made it his mission to serve justice to those who had been cruel to Amelia. Damon had no redeeming qualities.
Amelia's husband cheated on her with Cara who happens to be her younger sister. This had been an ongoing theme throughout Amelia's life, but that didn't make it any easier. Her parents gave no support once they found out what had happened. In fact they didn't take her seriously when Amelia tried to tell them Damon had become her stalker or that he was a threat to them. Amelia had no idea that her life was about to become a nightmare and there would be irrevocable consequences just because her husband and sister decided to have an affair.
