Unfortunately, his best friend Gretta wasn't so lucky.
Now, as one of the top detectives in the area, a file comes across his desk that forces him to return to the same forest he escaped.
Will he solve the case or fall into the pit of lust and deception?

Rhea Vynn is a Midwest girl with a rebellious soul who follows her dreams, quite literally. One morning she woke up with a story to tell and after several months she shared what she was doing with one of her friends. That is where the downward spiral of chaos into the pit of her enjoyment of writing Romantic Suspense and Crime Thrillers began. When she's not off chasing dreams she's running around to make sure that her five children are happy and healthy, and driving her husband down the tunnel of love and insanity.
I have no clue how this book is being rated with 4/5 stars. I’m so confused on what I read. Half of it made no sense and was so unrealistic. The two spicy scenes were mid at most and came completely out of left field. Don’t waste your time.
Holy wow! I absolutely loved every second of this book! It's so hard to believe this was a debut novel because the writing was amazing!
I'm not sure what I was expecting going into this book, but everything about it exceeded my expectations! The whole story was perfect! Hans is definitely going to live rent-free in my head forever!!!
The spice is this was definitely *chief's kiss*!!!!
I definitely recommended for anyone looking for a quick dark and spicy read!
Favorite Quote: This woman had demons buried deep, and he silently vowed to himself that he would exorcize every single one
“This woman had demons buried deep and he silently vowed to himself that he would exorcize every single one to find the answers he desired.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️.5
This one was a ride, honestly I jumped into this book without even reading details I just went in blind and man did I like the ride, I can honestly tell you this book was NOT what I was expecting, it is so different to the things I read and I’m glad I took the chance. I finished this book in less than 12 hours that’s how quick it will grab you.
The story and the plot is on point, quick and to the point, there is no waste time in here. It follows Hans and Gretel, they were separated after being kidnapped around 15-16 years old and one night they were able to scape BUT Greta got lost and he never found her. He looked for 16 years and nothing, but now a good detective he was assigned this murder happening in the same place where he lost Greta. The twist and turns in this books is crazy, it will keep you into never wanting to stop until you know what happened. I loved everything on this book and I can’t wait for Rhea to give us more on these characters.
Murder, mystery, suspense, romance, kidnapping, lost and found 😳 This book has it all.
16 years ago, Hans lost Greta in the forest. Now, he is thrust into a murder case happening in the same forest. He never gave up on finding her, but what he finds now will astound him.
Spicy romance with lust, lies, and apple pie 🥧 follow Hans as he tries to figure out what is going on. Not everything is as it seems.
The story ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds 😎
This book is a modern retelling of Hansel and Gretel but with many twists and turns! Gretta is lost in the woods with Hans when they are 15-16 and is never seen again. Hans is haunted by her disappearance and when another dead body turns up in the same forest Gretta went missing in, it’s up to Hans to uncover the truth of what really happened.
There are so many twists and turns and it’s a quick read so you get what you’re looking for pretty much right away! Dark, spicy, twisted and captivating, this book will have you turning the pages faster than you could imagine possible.
The spice!!! I couldn’t put this book down. I needed to know what happens. This is definitely a great debut novel and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Title: Hans Author: Rhea Vynn Stars: 3/5⭐️ Spice: 3/5 🌶 Spoilers: No Genre: Romantic Suspense Tropes: No HEA, Unal!v!ng, FF Scene, MMF Scene, Retelling.
My Favourite Quotes: "Hans didn't feel the need to RSVP to this situation" "It's looking like fifty shades of scared over there"
About The Book: A contemporary take on the Hansel and Gretal story. Hans is put on a case that brings back things from his past that he might not be ready to face.
What Will Stay With Me: Pineapple on pizza as a warning 😂
Review: I want to preface this by saying that what I'm about to write is entirely my own opinion and preferences for what I enjoy. I'm sure a lot of people absolutely adored this book as is but it just didn't quite hit the spot for me.
I was really excited for this one and I absolutely love the premise. My issue is that the emotional attachment was missing for me. I didn't feel as if the characters displayed enough emotion until about 70% into the book and this was a big factor in why I didn't really develop an emotional connection with these characters. Without Spoilers, there was a lot going on and it didn't feel like the author allowed time and words for those characters to process one thing before immediately diving into the next. I understand that it's a very short book and that to fit in that amount of action there wouldn't have been a lot of space for filler, but a lot of the times with books like these it's the filler that makes them something really special and cements that emotional connection to the characters so that you really feel what they're going through.
This book also says that it's a romantic suspense but it reads much more like a mystery/thriller with spice for me because the romantic elements just didn't really seem to be there. I have no problem with this because I personally like either genre but thought that it was noteworthy.
I definitely feel like this book had the potential to be a five star read for me and that if it had had that little bit of filler and fluff between action scenes to develop my connection with the characters then I could have been obsessed. I also wanna take a second to say that I didn't expect this book to be funny at all but all of my favourite quotes made me snort laugh and the pineapple on pizza in the warn!ngs list was brilliant. Considering that this is a debut novel, the author did an amazing job and is definitely someone that I will still be watching to see what else they come out with.
*TLDR* I could have enjoyed it more but still a good book that I would recommend as worth a read if you like twisty fairytale retellings.
Prepare to have your childhood memories upended as Rhea fearlessly dives into the gripping narrative of Hans's journey after the tragic loss of his friend Gretta in Brighton Forest sixteen years ago.
With determination fueled by guilt, Hans rises through the ranks to become the city's top detective.
However, his world is shaken when his supervisor, Marco, hands him a case file that unravels everything he thought he knew.
Amidst his efforts to reconcile with his ex, Hans secretly hopes to uncover the truth behind Gretta's disappearance through this new investigation. But as loved ones start falling victim to a mysterious assailant, Hans begins to question if he's cursed.
Rhea masterfully guides readers through a captivating tale, keeping them on the edge of their seats until the final page. This binge-worthy debut novel leaves readers craving more, eagerly awaiting the sequel.
Rhea's skillful storytelling sets a high bar for future works, making her an author to watch.
I wholeheartedly recommend this dark and twisted suspense romance to those seeking an enthralling read.
Well this was an unexpected ride that I have jumped on, and I'm not even upset by it haha. I have a tendency to jump into ARCs and teams without totally reading what everything is about, 🫣 but then it's always worked out as me loving it this way. I have a brief idea of what I'm getting involved with, but never fully wrapping my head around it all. And Hans was no different!
This little twist on Hansel & Gretel was amazing! The story had me hooked and it took me less than 24 hours to fly through this because I needed to know more!
Hans and Gretta had gotten separated and he spent 16 years looking for her. He never gave up, and then new bodies started dropping and he was assigned to the case knowing it was right where he and Gretta were separated.
This story will take you on twists and turns and have you questioning everything. I loved the characters and the story was awesome!
This book had me from the first page. Following Hans trying to figure out who is responsible for the disappearances is full of twists and turns. Spice level 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. Multiple povs, which i love. I got lost in Hans😍😍. And i love sages crazy. Plus it ended with a great cliffhanger!! Definitely recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 star
I’m 30% in and I predict the person helping the witch is Greta! What a twist that would be! Gotta keep reading to see if I’m right!I was sort of right in a way and also not!! The smut is this is 🔥 I was utterly shocked Hans lit the house up thinking that was the end til Rhea threw another twist that had me reeling!!
Retellings are one of my favorite things to read, and this was an interesting take on Hansel and Gretel. It’s a quick, spicy read which I enjoy. It gets right to the point, there’s no unnecessary filler. The cliffhanger at the end had me shook! Thanks Rhea Vynn for the arc and congrats on your debut!🖤
This was an interesting take! I'm not sure I've read a Hansel and Gretel story like this before! I loved it! I can't wait to see what Rhea writes next! 💜
I really enjoyed reading this dark twisted retelling of Hansel and Gretel! Full of dark twists and turns that made the book hard to put down!! I devoured it, needed to know more! Loved the characters and the story was perfectly written! Read Trigger Warnings before reading!
Lies, ties and yummy apple pie. We all enjoyed the children story Hansel and Gretel…. Now that we are grown why now enjoy this new ending and see what happened 16 years later and follow the story as Hans is now a detective and has been searching high and low for his best friend. And you can say he found her alright! A quick short read and high recommend of you enjoy a good ending as well!
Rhea strategically takes readers on a captivating rollercoster ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. With twists and turns around every bend, this story will have you questioning everything.
As a dark spicy retelling of Hansel and Gretel, this was definitely a page turner that I could not put down. I read through the book in one sitting.
Rhea shows off her captivating writing skills that sets her a part and does not give off debut novel vibes. If you are into dark spicy retellings, I definitely recommend this book to you.
was a nice journey through the world of retelling for Hansel and Gretel! As I read you can definitely see the drive that Hans has to make sure his past doesn’t define him. He navigates his way through life helping others to make up for those he couldn’t help in his earlier life and that is so admirable. As we read along the twists and suspense unraveles and I was questioning so many things and ended up SO SHOCKED by how this ended! Side note there has to be more coming lol, because I don’t think Hans’ journey is done! It takes drive to learn how to let go, forgive yourself, and move forward and Hans did that, even though his method was unhinged😂🖤🖤
From the very start, the TW had me cracking up. while TW should be taken very seriously , pineapple on pizza seems to trigger a lot of people for a different reason, and I loved that it was listed 🤣.
This is a hansal and retelling. Written in a third-person pov and doesn't not have a happy ending. That aside, I still managed to connect with hans through the book. And was not expecting the way it ended. I'm hoping this means it's leading to book 2 as I'd love to read more of hans story. Although there are some spicy scenes, this book was based more on the plot, which I really enjoyed.
Wow! I didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I’m AMAZED that this is Rhea’s debut novel! It’s so fantastically written that I imagined myself immersed in the pages. I loved how the FMC was the villain! That’s not something you see a lot of and it was awesome. Sage was badass and the ending quote got me! Ahh, Hans, what can I say? Even though it’s crazy and she’s crazy…I wanted that HEA. lol I can't wait to see where this story goes from here!! Anyways, don’t hesitate to grab this when it releases. You won’t be sorry!!

I liked the premise of the story, and overall flow of it. But there was a lot of seemingly unnecessary comments and elements I felt, like the smut aspect felt quite forced and rushed. I get that the pace of the book was fast and it was quite short one aswell so I get how it needed to move on fast but i would have enjoyed it more if it was just tad slower and in more detail to the background of the story and the story itself rather than what felt quite surface level quick book.
This debut book by Rhea was a unique twist on Hansel and Gretta! This is the first Hansel and Gretta retelling I’ve read and it did not disappoint!!!
It starts off with Hansel and Gretta’s escape from “the old hag” in the woods. They get to safety and Hans runs off to get water. Upon his return… Gretta is nowhere to be found. He spends the next 16 years searching and wondering what happened to her. He became a detective and continued to look into the case.
In present day… there has been a string of murders in the very forest he was once lost in and his boss, Marco, puts Hans on the case. Upon arriving on the scene of the latest murder he is reunited with his ex girlfriend, Alana. A flame is sparked as the revisit their past love.
2 murders, of people Hans cared for, later… Hans tracks off into the forest alone to find that old cottage he escaped from 16 years prior. He encounters Sage, a beautiful woman who is living in said cottage. He starts to question all that he knows.
There are several twists and turns. Some that you see coming and others that you do not! There are 2-3 semi spicy scenes. I can’t say much else without giving out spoilers. This is a super quick read and great start for a debut book! It ends on a small cliffhanger!
Hans is the first book in The Breadcrumb Chronicles series. This is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel written in third person POV. I don’t read a lot of books in this perspective, but it didn’t bother me throughout this one.
The book started from the perspective of before Gretta went missing in Brighton Forest and jumps to the present when she has been missing. Hans is a detective who is assigned a case that hits close to home with seeing where individuals go missing in the forest where Gretta had. The banter between Alana and Hans made me laugh. There was spice in this book. Seeing Sage introduced into the book and the interaction with Alana was interesting to see. I love how Sage kept saying “Hansy” and he knew only one person had said that before but wouldn’t admit to who it was at first. The heart to heart towards the end of the book to gather more information on what everything was happening was a good addition to the book. The ending of this book made me need more!
Favorite Quotes: “I’m not interested in this little game of cat and mouse you are trying to stir up. You’ve had your fun.” “It’s looking like fifty shades of scared over there.”
The only things that kept this from being a 5 star read for me was that I wished there would have been a little more on the new about Alana, it just seemed to be over really quick for how important she seemed. I also wish there would have been some sort of flashback or something to what had happened to him and Gretta!
That being said, I loved it! I loved that he escaped to become a detective and for it to all come full circle for him. I also loved the stolkhome-ish dynamic and banter between Hans and Sage, but in a way that from the first time he saw her he was just drawn to her.
I like that it was multiple POV so you got to know what’s going each character was thinking and it wasn’t all one sided I think that’s added a lot to the plot of the story.
Also the spicy was definitely spicing 🫠 and the ending!! I can’t say much more without spoilers, but I definitely enjoyed this book and would absolutely recommend reading it!
Also be sure to follow Rhea Vynn, and keep a look out for her next book(s)!!
I don’t think I really knew what to expect when I started this book…obviously I had read the blurb, and I was aware that it was a retailing of Hansel and Gretel, but I was unsure how it could be retold as a spicy read. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised…it was very well written and the spice…was spicing! It was hot and I shall always see Hansel and Gretel in a different way now. I think that choosing this story to retell was a clever idea and a rather unique one too - this is the first one that I have read. The character development was very good too, even though it was on the shorter side, we get to know the characters and get a really good feel for their personalities. I have to admit that this book leaves you with a whole heap of questions…at this moment in time I am unsure whether there will be any follow up books but I suppose with the ending being left as it was - there is a chance for this. Would recommend the read!
🥧 K!dnapping 🥧 Cottage in the Middle of the Woods 🥧 BDSM Vibes 🥧 Heavy TW List
Well... When i finished this book my first initial thought was "that was not what i expected at all" then it went to "that was kinda messed up but i loved it". I didn't know how to feel about our FMC Gretta until i found out about all of her experiences and then i realised she was a very traumatised woman just trying to protect herself and find some peace whilst also trying to find the one person who she always felt safe with... Hans.
Hans is the Detective MMC with a Sadistic side of his own.. Consensually of course unlike our dear Gretta, Hans is Sarcastic, Hot, Smart with a Spicy side that could make any woman beg. But he finds himself knee deep in trouble when his curiosity gets the better of him and finds himself in his own personal cell in the very cottage he came looking for, with the person he was trying to find, but instead of her being the one in cuffs... he is the one all tied up...
This book had a few twists and turns i didn't really anticipate and the ending has me wanting another book.. plus Hans himself of course. And i haven't come across a book that has themes similar to the story of Hansel and Gretel which i found i enjoyed as i'm partial to a good retelling. Please read the TW as this has quite a few of them and this is really necessary. Happy Reading 🖤
"The fire you'd hoped would consume my flesh was merely a projection of the fires that burn in ourhearts. The phoenix rises from the ashes, but the crow finds the treasure that remains... XoX"
Ohh my gawd it was so good. This is a dark Retelling of Hansel & Grettel. With spice, and a strong MMC & an unhinged FMC. 16 yrs ago they tried to escape the woods, only for Hans to escape & Grettel to be taken again. Once back in the real world he becomes a police officer and is handed a file of murders from the same woods he escaped from...not realizing it's a crumb trail leading to her..the ones he's not giving up on searching for, for those 16 yrs..
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in to this as I’m not a massive reader of retellings, but I loved Hansel and Gretel as a child and I love mystery/detective books, when you throw in some 🌶️ as well, I was actually really looking forward to giving it a go, and I was not disappointed.
It’s a fast paced, easy read with several twists and turns (some I expected and some I didn’t) which kept me turning the pages wanting to find out more.
I would have liked to see a little more detail in the characters and settings, at times it felt a little too fast paced, but that’s just my personal preference.
Overall I really enjoyed it, It did end on a bit of a cliffhanger, I can’t wait to read more of Hans’ story!
Hans tried to escape the woods with Gretta when they were young. Hans goes to get water, and when he returns, Gretta has disappeared. 16 years later, Hans is a detective but is still haunted by Gretta's disappearance. Hans is lonely, and he feels like something is still missing.
Another dead body pops up in the forrest, and Hans heads it. He has to work with his ex to find out who is killing these people. Hans and the ex are catching feelings for each other and having a good time together.
Hans stumbles upon a cabin with a beautiful woman in it. The road this story takes is unexpected, and I can't wait for more. The spice is written very well, 5/5!
