What if the life you lived was a lie?

Private investigator John Cutler never met his father. Nearly forty years ago, the man abandoned his newborn son without explanation. It’s a painful truth to both Cutler and his mother, a fact neither can fully bury in the past.

Today, Cutler has a new love, a stable business, and a continuing relationship with his daughter. Nothing is perfect, but it feels like his worst days are behind him.

Then a woman shows up at Cutler’s door with a request for help. Her boyfriend recently disappeared, and she’s reluctant to ask the police to find him. An aura of mystery and danger surrounds the woman, leading Cutler to question her motives and his willingness to get involved.

When she reveals who her missing boyfriend is, Cutler’s choice becomes clear.

And his life will never be the same.

Colin Conway is the creator of the 509 Crime Stories, a series of novels set in Eastern Washington with revolving lead characters. They are standalone tales and can be read in any order.

He also created the Cozy Up series which pushes the envelope of the cozy genre. Libby Klein, author of the Poppy McAllister series, says Cozy Up to Death is “Not your grandma’s cozy.”

Colin co-authored the Charlie-316 series. The first novel in the series, Charlie-316, is a political/crime thriller that has been described as “riveting and compulsively readable,” “the real deal,” and “the ultimate ride-along.”

He served in the U.S. Army and later was an officer of the Spokane Police Department. He's owned a laundromat, invested in a bar, and ran a karate school. Besides writing crime fiction, he is a commercial real estate broker.

Colin lives with his beautiful girlfriend, three wonderful children, and a codependent Vizsla that rules their world.

Unexpected twist and turns make this an addictive read.
Cutler, acutely aware of his personal demons and perceived failings tries to fit himself into the mould of how he thinks a decent man behaves within a committed relationship with a woman. Try as he might, his demons whisper in his ear daring him to leave the straight and narrow parameters he has set for himself. Mixed into this, his newest sexually alluring client has tasked him with tracking down her missing boyfriend who may have links to unlock the mystery of the father Cutler never knew.
Along the way the story takes several unexpected twist and turns. My obsession to know whether Cutler finally found the answer as to why his client’s boyfriend went missing and whether this man could shed light on who was Cutler’s father had me reading almost till sunrise.
Eagle eyed readers of Colin Conway’s Cozy Up Series may also spot an early reference or two in this story to the bookshop cat. This was a delightful cameo nod (a la Alfred Hitchcock) to the bookshop cat in the Cozy up Series.

Cutler is leading a fairly "normal" life for him. He has a girlfriend with 2 kids and the struggle to "blow up his life" hasn't raised it's head in a while.

Enter a new client. She asks him to find her missing boyfriend who she claims is the father he never knew- but it's someone different than on his birth certificate. He turns her down but then the need to know rears it's head. Off he goes to find Nick but meanwhile he calls Mom (someone he talks to less than twice a year) for info that she refuses to talk about. Who is Nick? When Cutler does find the answers he seeks, I thought the call to his mother about his find should have been included.

Cutler finds Nick lived in Canada for quite a while but is now back. Each time he seems to running from a crime. While Cutler is chasing the trail, more deaths happen - Nick seems to be a guy you don't want to know much less be his father.

Along the way, Cutler is tempted a few times to make poor decisions but holds back. At the end, you get the feeling it's going to happen soon.

Cutler only understands life with a shroud of lies. From birth to present day, the truths he knew may not have been so true after all. Cutler is that guy that you secretly want to see win the lottery, get married, etc. Something...anything ...to work out in his favor. He's really not a bad guy. I recommend this book as I do all of Colin's books. He has so many different characters...but manages to bring each of them to life.

Another ARC read. Here is my review. Cutler is back for one last gig, but this one is close to his heart. I have certainly enjoyed every one of this series, the antics of the big burly biker has enchanted me for each episode. A fast paced, great characters, edge of your seat, story to entertain you. Hope there is more to come!
