She gives me what I didn't know I needed. I don't know if I can do the same for her...
For years, I've lived as a broken shell of a man, the Prom Night survivor who doesn't deserve to live. I continue my stolen life for my family's sake, but my silent world is a dark one full of terrors, with no respite to be found anywhere.
Then Liaden comes along.
She's my polar opposite. An extroverted, highly successful professor, always smiling, always a sparkling ray of quirky pink sunshine. This woman makes me feel things I never even felt with the girl I lost. The girl who died in my arms many years ago when the world exploded around us.
The girl I failed to save.
Liaden, though... She draws me to her like a magnet, pulling me into the light in ways I don't deserve.
But I'm broken, weak, sinful. I can't even speak the words to tell her how much she means to me.
Lizzie Stanley writes steamy romance with dark themes, and likes to collect the tears of her readers.
When not writing, this chaos goblin of a human tells her husband how much he reminds her of a goth Keanu Reeves, cuddles her disabled dog, and reads. Tons.
She's housetrained and friendly and loves to hear from people. Feel free to hit her up on Instagram or TikTok, or by emailing lizziestanley.author@gmail.com.
Wow! What We Need is an intense and emotional book! Dean is a survivor of a mass shooting that happened on prom night at his high school. He was extremely lucky to survive, but was shot in the throat causing him to become mute. He is also suffering from severe ptsd, survivors guilt, hallucinations, flashbacks, and night terrors from the horrific and terrifying ordeal he went through. After living in New Orleans and dealing with all the gun violence in the US, he no longer feels safe. So Dean and his cousin Eli move overseas and now work at their cousin’s tattoo shop. Liaden is a professor at the university and is a linguist. Having a love of languages, she decides to get a tattoo to represent her life’s work! She is referred to Dean since he is amazing at tattooing script, and is set up for her consultation. When sweet, bubbly, talkative Liaden walks in with her pink hair looking like sunshine itself, Dean is hit with a feeling he hasn’t felt in 15 years. He likes this girl. And from the way she looks and reacts to him, he knows she likes him too. For the first time in a long time, Dean feels a real connection to someone and is absolutely terrified. Can Dean overcome his mental demons and give this thing between them a real shot? Or will he let his fears take over and miss out on true love ❤️
Dean is a broken man living in his past trauma. The ptsd and panic attacks are heartbreaking, and representation of his depression and survivors guilt is gut wrenching. He hates being the mute that everyone has to watch over for fear of him having a breakdown. He feels like a burden, a problem, a menace, and wishes he was the one that died in that shooting instead of his girlfriend. He can’t move on and is stuck in his torment, but Liaden is a shining light in his darkness. Liaden is very intelligent and isn’t one to run away from a problem. The relationship between these two opposites was endearing, and both of them really tried to be what each other needed. But when things got really bad with Dean, Liaden and the rest of Deans family are there to make the hard decisions for the person they love ❤️🩹
The audiobook was so good and the narrators were outstanding! June DeBorahea with her Irish accent was so perfect for Liaden. She brought that chatterbox to life and really captured her personality! Ryan Stone nailed Dean with his internal dialog and his New Orleans accent. His performance was so emotional and brought you right into Dean’s inner turmoil. Check the trigger warnings for this book though before checking it out! It starts off with a very intense first person encounter of the school shooting Dean experienced and it was hard to listen to, but it really made you understand why he is the way he is. And like I said before, the representation of his mental health issues was heartbreaking. Dean had the best family and support system anyone could ask for, and I really loved that. This book is emotionally draining, heartbreaking, traumatic, and really makes you think and sympathize with the characters. But this book is also about support, family, friendships, and finding a love that is understanding and true. This book was an experience. And though it has a lot of hard subjects, it was crafted really well and handled with care. The author did a phenomenal job and this series has really found a special place in my heart ❤️
There's no denying it Lizzie is THE EVIL WOMAN , SENDING me on a rollercoaster that is the Wishbone Tattoo series. I knew she was a wonderful writer from book1 ( EmEli story ) and I knew I would fall in love with Dean even more than I already did from the glimpse,we had in what we deserve but wow the prologue floored me and I am very rarely rendered speechless and I actually had to process what I read for few minutes ( that is a good impactful way the scene was written) . Always, said a Great writer can make you care about side characters as much as,the main characters and Lizzie is a master when it comes,to making you care. For example: book one, it was Dean who jumped out at me and made me look forward to reading his story. This time it was Leo and his shenanigans which were much needed in light of Deans darkness. Now as much as I am Team Dean forever I have mad respect for Eli I honestly thought Eli and Dean were brothers not cousins. Love Leo for being comic relief in the story and for caring enough to help a friend. . I would give 100/5 stars if I could.
This is new author for me, and I so glad to have found her. I loved this one so much I went back to the first book in the Wishbone Tattoo series, and I’m so excited for the next one! Heed the trigger warnings on this one, because parts of it, while vital to the story and character arc, can be difficult to read.
Our hero Dean is a troubled character. Due to a trauma he suffered, he's barely going through the motions, and that takes every bit of effort and determination he can muster. He has a terrific, small group of friends who understand his unique needs and watch out for him. He's also a skilled tattoo artist and works with his cousins at Wishbone Tattoo.
Liaden O’Brien is a linguistics Professor University of Foxton, and she's decided it's time for her first tattoo. A friend recommended Dean, and she's immediately taken with him. She's not only talented when it comes to words, but it seems everything she tries, she excels at. She's the perfect sunny disposition to Dean's darkness, and she fits in well with his group of friends. An unlikely pairing maybe, but she's the Yang to his Yin.
This compelling romance is raw and gritty and deals with extremely difficult subjects, but it’s also surprisingly beautiful and incredibly sweet. This found family holds each other up, always has each other's back, and welcomes new members into the fold with open arms. Dean is like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, his story one of overcoming past pain and trauma, and one of new beginnings. Profound, emotive, and unforgettable, these extraordinary characters will own your heart and live in your soul long after the last page.
This book is SUPERB! Worth the wait! I have been waiting for Dean's story since reading What We Deserve. What We Need was so lovingly crafted and cared for. The subject matter is a bit tough but handled so gently. I fell in love with Dean in book one and never dreamed of how he could find his happy ever after. Well Liaden is his soul mate for sure. Bright, funny, outgoing, beautiful and crazy smart yet also harboring her own hurts. Dean and Liaden "get" each other. There are hurdles to jump and tears to be cried. But this is a beautiful story of helaing and love. Though it is nice to have read book one for an introduction to the characters it is not necessary in order to enjoy book two. Please check the trigger warnings!
I was looking forward to this book so much. I absolutely loved Dean in What We Deserve and wanted him to have his HEA too. Unfortunately, the pairing in this one didn't work for me.
Liaden is written as the ultimate manic pixie dream girl and I hate it. I get what the author was trying to do, making Liaden a counterpoint to Dean's quiet angst, but holy shit this character is ANNOYING. It's the cliche trope of a MPDG magically healing a damaged man. It feels wrong, somehow flippant, to use a cartoonish love interest given the story's background.
The opening sequence was so well written, so moving, that the letdown was massive. Liaden is basically a caricature of a person. So much so that I could only make it to the 15% mark before DNF.
Like, I get that Dean's background and ongoing PTSD is VERY heavy and the author felt that she needed to counter that in some way, but I feel like she went waaaaay too far in the other direction with the love interest. Liaden is immature and incredibly shallow. It would have made so much more sense to have a calm, mature, stable character for Dean to love. Someone that would be a port in a storm for him.
All that being said, I still love What We Deserve. The characters were perfect for each other. I just wish I could have said the same for Dean's story.
♡5🎧♡5⭐♡3🌶️♡ Tropes: 🧲Opposites-attract ❤️🩹Mental health rep 🤫Mute and scarred hero fighting PTSD 🎀Pink-haired professor FMC with the same IQ as Stephen Hawking 💘All the feels and so much heartache 💝A very hard-won HEA that they really, REALLY had to work for ⚜️Left staring at the wall, crying, with a book hangover the size of Louisiana
First of all... June deBorahae ... with ACCENTS YESSS PLEASE! June voices the FMC and other female voice a full range of British, a touch of the Cajun, and Scottish...? SIGN ME UP! Okay but seriously, this was amazing! Laiden as a character was so so so fun to read and laugh and fist bump -metaphorically of course. Wicked smart, funny, and so much love to give
Second of all, Ryan Stone you are amazing sir but I know you don't need me to tell you that. Enjoyed does not see like the right word but I don't know how else to say it. I enjoyed listening to you discovering Dean and also, HELLO with accents toooo! You made me feel Dean's fear, hesitation, guilt, despair, but most of all, love. For everyone around him - found family - and eventually himself.
Third and final point - Lizzy Stanley, these are not just words on pages. Not just thoughts thrown together. You have created awareness and a sense of being SEEN. Laiden saw Dean and didn't run away. She stayed. Not only did she stay, she embarrassed, guided, and loved him through it and after. Hard earned HEA indeed.
Wow! I wanted this book so badly. I knew it would hurt, but it is soooooo worth the tears I shed (and I shed a lot). I fell so hard for all these characters, but Dean has always had my heart. I wanted to reach into the book and hug him almost every page, ok it was every page. He is strong, he is a fighter and this book is absolutely incredible.
First Lizzie Stanley you beautiful, strong, amazing and incredible writer! You left your heart and soul on the pages of this book. Thank you for this beautiful story. Thank you for Dean, Liaden, Eli, Em, Sadie and Leo! I wish I could be a part of their friend gang and sing karaoke with them!!!
Dean you beautiful, strong incredible character. I cannot thank you enough Lizzie Stanley for the courage and heart it took to write this book and the fight you put into a character like Dean! He struggles, he goes on a rollercoaster ride if emotions, heck I felt like I was on thst ride with him. But the outcome was worth the pain.
And Liaden you are the breath of freshness we all needed. I mean obviously Dean needed you the most but I am soooo glad Dean found you and you found the Wishbone family.
I can’t wait for the next book! Lizzie writes with such emotion. She bares everything on each page. Even describing little details she paints such a vivid picture. This was was emotional, heartfelt, inspiring and soooo incredible!
💗Tattoo Artist MC 💗Professor/Wicked Smart FMC 💗Found Family 💗PTSD/Survivor’s Guit 💗Overcoming Trauma 💗Incredible Love Story
**please check triggers are emotional topics are discussed!
Are you looking for your next book to sob over? Because this one will have you staring at the wall contemplating all of your life decisions. 😭😭
Lizzie… dear god, you wrecked me with this bad boy, especially with that prologue.. 🥹 check the warnings, friends. But go in blind if you can!
I felt so much heartache while listening to this, and felt so much of Dean’s pain. 😭 he’s such a scarred gentle giant and I love this man so much. I just wanna wrap my arms around him and hold him right, protect his sweet heart. 🥺 he found his perfect match in Liaden. They’re complete opposites, but she’s so gentle with him and so considerate of what he needs. It was so beautiful, and they’re so cute together with undeniable chemistry. Plus she makes him blush and I couldn’t be more obsessed when he does that. 😍
June Deborahae and Ryan Stone performed in duet on the audio, and it was simply perfection. They breathed life into this story and into the characters. Loved the accents, I just couldn’t stop listening. It’s an incredible audio experience, and this series needs so much more love.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Can’t wait for Leo and Sadie’s book to come to audio. 🫶🏼
This was so beautiful, but so raw, heavy and emotional. The amount of trauma and healing packed into this book is indescribable. This was written in a way I felt like I was there in the characters healing journey. So much ptsd, anxiety and panic attacks for what the MMC went through. It was so heart breaking. The yearning and tension was high and the FMC was patient and compassionate. It truly was touching and this is a story that needs to be read by more. I loved every bit of it.
Title: What We Need (Wishbone Tattoos Book 2) Author: Lizzie Stanley Hero/Heroine: Dean & Liaden Tropes: Opposites Attract, Second Chance at Love, Angsty, Mute Hero, ASL Rep,

✨the good ✨
I don’t think that there are enough words to justify how much I adored this book. After reading What We Deserve, I knew that Dean’s story would be heartbreaking, however I didn’t realise how much. This was a character so tortured and torn about events from his past, that he refused to allow himself to feel any sort of feelings for anyone. Until Liaden.
Content with going to work at Wishbone Tattoos, spending time with his friends and family and staying at home, Dean never planned to meet someone that would change his life so inexplicably. Liaden, wanting a very intricate and detailed tattoo, ends up in Dean’s chair and its heart eyes for her from here on out.
When I say that this book had me in a chokehold, I mean that this bitch had its arms round my neck and was squeezing for dear life. It was worth every month I had to wait to read it, the author did not disappoint with Dean and Liaden’s story. I don’t want to go into too much detail in my review for fear of giving spoilers away, however I will say that you need to read this book. And the first in the series. Tell you what, just spend a weekend binge reading both, trust me, you won’t be disappointed. The depth of emotion portrayed throughout this story was incredible, a few times it had me convincing myself that the reason my eyes were watering was due to hayfever…
This story will stay with me for quite a while, and it’s safe to say it will feature right near the top of my favourite books of 2024. Beautiful. Poignant. Heartbreaking. Uplifting. There just aren’t enough words to describe my love for this story. Bravo Miss Stanley, Bravo.
✨ the bad ✨
Mitchell. Massive twat.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this to read. This is my honest review.
✨overall thoughts: heartbreaking. poignant. beautiful. uplifting. this book was definitely worth the wait ✨ 3rd act break up: sort of? ✨ heat level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ ✨ star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What We Need is book two in the Wishbone Tattoos Trilogy by Lizzie Stanley.
Story: 4.5 ✨ Audiobook: 6 (so SO good) 🔥
Narrated by June deBorahae and Ryan Stone These audiobooks have been absolutely incredible, June and Ryan completely nailed it, and I was totally captivated by their storytelling of Laiden & Dean's story. June with an accent was just fantastic which is no shock-June immerses herself into every character and gives the performance her all every single time. And this was my first time listening to Ryan Stone. He absolutely crushed it as well and my heart strings were definitely being pulled by the utter emotion emanating from this mans performance.
The story kicks off pretty heavy right from the prologue and keeps you hooked throughout. I loved seeing a bit of Dean in the first book, but uncovering more of his story was such an emotional experience. It's heartbreaking how much he's been through and watching him relive it every single day. Laiden, the cheeky and incredibly intelligent woman she is, looked at Dean and was never shy about expressing how she felt about him. I think Dean really needed someone who wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted, especially given how he sees himself. Laiden turned out to be the perfect match for Dean's quiet, reserved nature, she helped pull him out of his shell, while still being cautious of his past and triggers.
These two truly deserved their happily-ever-after, and it was such a beautiful journey to listen to, I really want to be part of this friend group so badly LOL
Thank you, Blue Nose and Lizzie Stanley, for the opportunity. I can't wait for the next one!
Let me start by saying please please read the trigger warnings, as they start off right off the bat hard and heavy. This one had me crying! The second I hit play, my heart was on the floor in pieces. Horrifying doesn't even begin to describe the prologue.
The menace survivors guilt and trauma that Dean experiences not just daily but hourly, every minute is heart wrenching. Ryan Stone did a spectacular job in performing the trauma, Dean's mental struggles, and also his sweet, caring, loving side that the demons of his past won't let shine. Even though Dean cannot speak, his actions are his words. And when Liaden enters the tattoo shop and Dean sees her, he starts catching feelings, feelings he feels he is not worthy of feeling. Just an absolutely amazing performance.
The queen of accents! June deBorahae performed the Irish fast talking and witty Liaden. Liaden, who is a linguist, will talk about anything and everything, can hold her own, and is the complete opposite of Dean. When she first meets Dean she just like him, is immediately attracted to him. She doesn't see him as his past or his mental health, but just a person, and willing to learn ASL so they can communicate. A truly beautiful performance. When things go from bad to worst, that's when hard decisions need to be made.
I highly recommend reading this series by starting with What We Deserve now available on KU and Audio!
I knew it was going to be sad, but there were real tears listening to this! The prologue is brutal and harrowing as we meet Dean before the event which changed everything. Having been introduced to Dean in book one, it was heartbreaking knowing what was about to happen and how the event had such a ripple effect for everyone in Dean's life.
Up until now, Dean has been existing rather than living, suffering from horrendous PTSD and survivors guilt. When Dean meets Liaden it is the catalyst for some major life changes. I liked how Liaden coming into Dean's life wasn't a magic fix for his trauma and that he still had to do the work. Things do get worse before they get better but the journey is so worth it.
June deBorahae is brilliant; I was a huge fan of hers already but this is the first time I've really heard her accent work and it was stellar. I genuinely thought there was more than one female narrator at one point. Ryan Stone is superb too and hits all the beats of Dean's emotional journey as he realises he can't treat Liaden as a fix and accepts he deserves to get better. There is a lot of angst, but there are still some fun moments with the Wishbone family who are amazing. Leo deserves his happy ending and I cannot wait to see him shoot his shot in book three!
My interpretation of the star system; 3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again 4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series 5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
🧁Hero Who can’t speak 🧁Trauma / PTSD 🧁Quirky and Confident Heroine 🧁Virgin Hero (it’s my favorite trope)
Oh my gosh, I’m sending Lizzie my therapy Bill! Holy smokes she definitely had me crying from the prologue alone. The prologue could be potentially triggering for some, so just be sure to read the warnings if violence in any form is triggering. For me it wasn’t, but it definitely made for a deep emotional impact… this is the scene that shows us the trauma and ptsd Dean our MMC deals with on a regular basis. How the scars from that night live with him, both externally and physically… he is physically unable to speak, and has to sign… he has things that still trigger him and cause him to spiral and have episodes where he breaks down completely. He is scared to let anyone in, with fear that he could harm them or just not be good enough. Gosh I just wanted to give him 5000 hugs.
Dean works at wishbone tattoo, just living his life through the motions, when a bright light of a woman comes into his tattoo room for a consult Liaden, who is bubbly and quirky… a pink haired woman who loves language and communication. One who also has felt like she doesn’t belong, but takes an immediate liking to Dean. They form a connection to him right away. They have this mutual attraction and connection that forms stronger and stronger as the story goes on. One where Dean is able to slowly open up and let some of his walls down.
I’m a sucker for a broken character and seeing the moments where only that one person brings calm and peace to their life. That was very much Liaden for Dean. This is a beautiful story of love and putting yourself out there for it again… when you don’t feel worthy, still starting over again. I definitely recommend!
This a beautifully written and deeply moving book that stays with you long after you finish it. Stanley has an incredible ability to capture raw emotion and the complexity of human relationships with honesty and sensitivity. The characters feel real and relatable, and the story unfolds in a way that keeps you completely engaged from beginning to end.
What I loved most is how thoughtfully the book explores themes of love, vulnerability, and what it truly means to understand and support one another. The writing is both powerful and intimate, making it easy to connect with the characters and their journeys.
This is the kind of book that makes you pause and reflect on your own life and relationships. If you’re looking for a heartfelt, thought-provoking read with beautifully crafted storytelling, What We Need is absolutely worth it. Highly recommend
I was really excited to see this book come out. I was eager for Dean's story. And I loved the first book, What We Deserve. That being said, I did not like this book. And that's more of a reflection of my tastes than the quality of the author's writing.
I think my issue was that I didn't like Liaden as a partner to Dean. Liaden on her own is a great character, but I just couldn't like her for Dean. I mean she knew the basic details of Dean's trauma (from the handout prior to the tattoo appointment) and her whole internal dialogue centers around whether she can have a fling with him. Just no! That seemed a bit insensitive to me. I fell in love with Dean in the first book and thought he deserved better than Liaden as a partner. Just my personal feelings.
The best parts of the book for me was the relationship and interaction between Dean and Eli as well as the bits with Sadie, Leo, and Emily. I also thought the first part of the book describing the shooting incident was well written.
I started ugly crying within the first couple of pages of this book. It broke me. They slowly, my heart was pieced back together. I can’t imagine what Dean had to live through, nor do I really want to. Bravo to this author. You didn’t just jump, you leaped - leaped so far that you wrote such an amazingly beautiful story that I know will be on my re-read list forever. How you pieced Dean back together was a work of art and bringing Liaden into his life - well - simply perfection. She was exactly who Dean needed to not just live but to reclaim his life that an awful trauma took from him. I can’t say enough about this read. This is the second book I have read from this author and I will be a forever fan of hers. This book blew out my expectations and I think that everyone should read it!
Phenomenal book that was worth the wait and tears! Rollercoaster of emotions on the realistic topic of anguish, tragedy, trauma, PTSD, anxiety and heart-wrenching theme. Dean is a damage soul who is suffering in silence for a traumatic past. Liaden is an beautiful soul that help him heal and find love. ⚠️ Reading Triggers Warnings ⚠️
Waw! Just came across this book on TT. And waw again. I fell in love with all these characters. Storyline is to be found in all other reviews. But I just love the flow and style of this author. Going back for the other Books. Because this was so easy to read concerning a dark, triggers full on story. I’m not a reader for real life stories, but this. I can follow and feel the characters in their sorrow, pain, love, friendship….
Lizzie Stanley is a very new author to me, so I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this. I am so glad I have crossed paths with her. This book took me on a roller coaster of a journey, it was emotional, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking and full of pain but I also found it beautiful and incredibly sweet.
Dean is the main hero in this story and he struggles with trauma and has gone through a lot in his life and struggles a freak deal. Not many people understand him, however, he has a small group of friends who do. He’s also an amazing tattoo artist and works with his cousin at a store called Wishbone Tattoo.
Liaden is a linguistic Professor and wants her first tattoo. A friend of hers recommends that she go and see Dean and the moment they meet, they connect and immediately get along well. Liaden is pretty smitten with Dean. What’s even better is that she fits in well with his group of friends.
These two were opposite, they couldn’t be more different, but Liaden’s brightness balances out Dean's darkness and they bounce off each other. Their connection and chemistry are there and you can’t help but cheer for them. It was incredible to read and made my heart happy. I love a good romance that is mixed in with mental health, trauma, heartache and overcoming pain and Lizzie mastered these aspects especially the mental health and trauma side of it very well. It was extremely well written and I fell in love with not just the main characters but the secondary characters also. It’s beautiful. I highly recommend taking a chance on this author! I do not regret doing so!
This book was profoundly beautiful, extraordinary, heartfelt, inspiring and unforgettable. Definitely worth more than 5 stars!
This is the second book in the Wishbone Tattoos Trilogy and the feelings this one gave me… Oh man, I thought I knew what I was getting into when listening to this book. But I had NO IDEA just how much it would break my heart, only to put it back together (it is an HEA of course). Dean is a mass school shooting survivor with severe PTSD and his story is absolutely tragic. But then he meets Liaden. And let me tell you they fight for their HEA. And Ryan Stone does such an amazing job as Dean, and June DeBorahae was an excellent Liaden. Seriously this book was so good!
I had such high hopes as I loved book one and was so endeared to Dean after his role as a side character is book 1.
This was definitely a triggering book for things that I didn't even realize were triggers for me. Also I really didn't like the FMC. I feel like she only focused around her physical attraction to him and sexualized all experiences of them together (and oh how I loathed her verbiage for her body parts, the first one or two were funny but then became so ridiculous that it completely pulled me out of the story). A huge pet peeve of mine is when the the FMC forgives the MMC after the big conflict without really discussing the issues... just seems so unlikely.
I feel like Dean deserved better but to me there was no way they could just pick up their relationship and continue... bleh.
It's been a while since I've loved and adored an h. I thought Liaden's character was a bit over the top at first, but no, she grew on me to be perfect for Dean. She was the ray of pink sunshine that he needed.
But more notably, the care taken with Dean's story is impeccable. I've never read a story that delved so deeply into a character with PTSD and survivor's guilt and done so with such empathy and grace.
Dean and Liaden are so not the ideal. But theirs was a story from the heart and such a hard fought road to an HEA for Dean.
A little sluggish with the pacing at times, so my attention wandered. Still a great one to read. Mind the triggers.
I have been waiting for this book for so long and it was worth every single minute of that wait. What We Need by Lizzie Stanley was more than I could have ever imagined it to be...I absolutely Loved Dean before when we Met him in book One(What We Deserve)..But after reading his full story I LOVE him even more. It is a story that is sometimes not easy to read so take heed of the trigger warnings, because Dean has gone through hell and his history is tragically emotional. Dean is Mute because of an horrendous and devestating life changing event that almost killed him..he lost everything that day including the ability to communicate through speech. Escaping to the U.K along with his cousin Eli he needs to get away from the ghosts of his past..Now thanks to Leo he is now a very talented Tattoo artist..but still a very broken man living with PTSD Understandably. Liaden strolls into Wishbone Tattoos seeking her first tattoo and changes Both their lives forever...she is so full of life and quite the opposite to Dean. A linguistic professor at the university she loves language and is quite the chatterbox..as soon as they meet there is a crackling chemistry between them that both of them cannot explain. For the first time Dean WANTS a woman and loves being around her,but he can't seem escape from the shadows of his past.He lives with survivors guilt and doesn't feel he deserves anything good in his life...Liaden is definately a slice of heaven in the hell he lives in everyday, this pink haired beauty has captured his heart and she is so perfect for this broken and tortured man. Liaden coaxes Dean out of his comfort zone..she brings him back to life makes him want to live instead of just existing. I Loved Liaden's personality she may have the IQ of Einstein but she has a heart of gold and the patience of a saint...she handles Dean with a gentle touch. I actually related to Dean I also have a milder version of PTSD and I completely understood his self hatred..Through-out this book my heart went out to Dean and I just wanted to comfort him,hug him and help him. This book is not all darkness though LEO the best friend is just so freaking Amazing ..I want a Leo in my life, his quirky sense of humour is the much needed light relief within this heavy book of drama and angst...I am already excited for Leo's story hoping that Sadie finally sees the light. I love the friendships in this book the way they all support and protect Dean..He has a lovely relationship with his cousin Eli..I wish I was a part of this Wishbone crew. This is such a BEAUTIFUL story of Love Redemption and forgiveness...Thought provoking and soul shattering and impeccably magnificent in every way. Lizzie Stanley's writing is exquisite and so touching at times but also very witty and funny too..Lizzie is an extremely talented storyteller and I love the way she writes and shapes her characters...Making them feel so honest and real. What We Need is my favourite book so far this year..It will remain one of my top reads EVER !! I LOVE this series so much and highly recommend it. A Superb read. Perfection. It deserves a galaxy of Stars.
What We Need The Wishbone Tattoos Trilogy, Book 2 By: Lizzie Stanley Narrated by: June DeBorahae, Ryan Stone
After listening to, and loving, the audiobook of Lizzie Stanley’s impressive first novel, “What We Deserve”, and meeting Dean, a side character, I was looking forward to his story. I knew Dean’s story was going to be a tough one, with all he had been through, but I was not expecting it to hit me as hard as it did. Wow, such a moving story, with emotions that are powerful, pouring off the pages and straight to the heart. I am loving the characters in this series, and the camaraderie between them, which is solid and special, a found family like no other. In this book, we learn Dean’s backstory and all he has been through, which is heartbreaking and the reason he is a broken man. He lost voice, but not his ability to talk, but he is selective with whom he talks because he is not that social. Then he meets her, Liaden, the sun to his darkness and one who talks enough for both of them. I adored Liaden, her sass and bubbly personality, and the way she was with Dean, treating him as an equal, her eagerness to learn his language. She brought out Dean’s charming side, a southern gentleman, but still a man battling his own inner demons, and being noble, he thinks he is not deserving of love or of her. It was great watching these two interact, then get to know each other and see their relationship morph into something so much more. Stanley penned another multi-layered story with depth, and I loved how it all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, some gut-wrenching moments, profound emotions, and a slow-burn but so worth the wait romance. Like the first book, the writing, plot, and world-building are incredible, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. Lizzie Stanley, thank you for another impressive and emotionally impactful story, bringing on tears, both sad and happy ones, and what it all led to: love, a heart full of love.
🎧📚🎧 June DeBorahae and Ryan Stone did an exceptional job voicing these characters, humanizing them with their personalities and emotions for a perfect portrayal of each. I loved how they took their roles and made them their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. DeBorahae nailed it as Liaden, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her wit to her sassy quirkiness to her fierceness. Stone was just as amazing in Dean’s role, showcasing his personality and demeanor, bringing out his raw emotions when his character battled with his inner demons, guilt, and issues with self-worth. Both were fantastic performing the roles of the side/secondary characters and did a great job with the accents too. These two are a fantastic team, with voices that complement each other and a captivating performance that has you hooked to the story. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to.
Prepare to be swept away on an emotional rollercoaster with What We Need by Lizzie Stanley, the stunning second book in the Wishbone Tattoo series. Set against the backdrop of deep-seated trauma and the power of love, this novel dives into the complexities of healing and the beauty of finding solace in unexpected places.
At the center of the story is Dean, a man haunted by the ghosts of his past, living in the shadows of a tragedy that shattered his world years ago. He exists in a state of numbness, merely surviving for the sake of his family, unable to break free from the chains of his own guilt and anguish. Enter Liaden O'Brien, a vibrant force of nature whose sunny disposition and unwavering optimism threaten to penetrate the walls Dean has built around his heart. As a linguistics professor with a penchant for adventure, Liaden is the polar opposite of Dean, yet their connection is undeniable.
The author masterfully crafts their relationship, portraying the delicate dance between light and darkness, hope and despair. Dean's reluctance to embrace happiness is palpable, his inner turmoil mirroring the storm raging within him. Liaden, on the other hand, is a beacon of warmth and understanding, offering Dean a glimpse of light in his darkest hour. Their journey together is fraught with obstacles and self-doubt, but it is also imbued with moments of profound tenderness and genuine connection.
What sets What We Need apart is its exploration of the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of love. Through Dean and Liaden's evolving relationship, Stanley delves into themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the healing balm of acceptance. Theirs is a love story born from pain but tempered by courage, a testament to the enduring strength of the human heart.
Moreover, the author’s portrayal of the supporting cast adds depth and richness to the narrative. From Dean's loyal friends to Liaden's infectious enthusiasm, each character contributes to the tapestry of emotions woven throughout the story. The sense of camaraderie and found family is palpable, serving as a poignant reminder that healing is often a collective effort.
Overall, What We Need is a poignant and evocative story that will resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page. With its richly drawn characters, heartfelt romance, and poignant themes, this novel is a true testament to the power of love to heal even the deepest wounds. Whether you're a fan of romance, drama, or simply compelling storytelling, What We Need is sure to leave an indelible mark on your heart.
I need to start this review by making it crystal clear that this book is a masterpiece. I cannot remember the last time a story moved me the way this one did. I savoured every word. I wept like a baby. I swooned. And now, finishing the final page, I am utterly shellshocked in the best possible way.
I read book one in the Wishbone Tattoos series, 'What we Deserve,' and loved it so much I bought the signed paperback. Ever since, I have been waiting for the next book in the series, knowing I would be in for another incredible read.
And I was.
In my experience, many romances written in first person present tense have characters that are indistinguishable from each other and also from characters in other author's books. There is nothing that makes them stand out as different people. Lizzie Stanley's characters have such different voices I can instantly tell who is speaking and feel that I know them as real people.
Liaden is utterly unique and also utterly believable and real to me. Dean is so heartbreakingly genuine and raw, that what he thinks and feels and says, sunk down to my bones. And each of the other principle side characters; Eli, Emily, Sadie, and Leo are so fabulously written they leap off the page and into your heart.
Now the content warning... This book deals with extremely dark and difficult subjects and you must read the content warning before diving in. I also recommend if you are sensitive like me, avoid the prologue and skip straight to chapter one. However, I must also stress that Stanley handles these themes with exquisite sensitivity, acknowledging how complex people are and that the road to healing is never straightforward.
The way in which she also handles Dean's communication in all forms is nothing short of a perfectly researched, judged and executed masterclass in how to write someone unable to speak.
As well as the angst, drama, and high emotion, Stanley is also brilliant at humour, and What we Need had me cackling out loud in many places. The WhatsApp group chats are particularly hilarious, as well as Liaden's various descriptions of her 'pink falafel'...
There are also several sections of this book which should be printed out and handed to young men as a training manual before they attempt to pleasure a woman in bed. Honestly, the scene where Eli and Leo advise Dean, and then Sadie weighs in is GOLD.
If you think you can handle a book that deals with the psychological fall out of a horrific high school shooting, then I urge you to read What we Need. It's a beautifully crafted, brilliantly written masterpiece that will stay with me forever. Just DO IT.
This is the second book in Lizzie’s Wishbone Tattoo series, and it can be read as a standalone. I have not read the first book, but I was easily able to follow along and understand the dynamics of all the characters. However, with that being said, I plan on going back to read 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦, because Eli and Emily’s story has me really intrigued, and I can’t wait for Leo and Sadie’s book next!
Before diving into this book, I highly suggest checking out the TWs. Lizzie discusses some very dark and extremely heavy topics that can be difficult to read. The Prologue will absolutely decimate your heart and leave you an emotional mess. Lizzie does a fabulous job in exploring the main character who experiences PTSD and the repercussions of it while also trying to overcome and rise above with the utmost tender care.
This story 𝘪𝘴 Dean’s story. He has suffered the most unimaginable tragedy at a very young age, and these demons dig their claws into the depths of his soul and never let up. He lives in the shadows of his past, deep-rooted mental health issues, and survivor’s guilt. He truly believes he’s not worthy of having a life to live, and this is touched upon when we witness his struggles from night terrors, flashbacks, and triggering events. But when a pink haired linguistics professor stumbles into the tattoo shop, he works at wanting him to do her first piece, a light sparks in Dean’s heart. Liaden is the balm to his scars, his penchant for embracing happiness, and showing him how resilient he is and his ability to come out the other side of the tumultuous storm.
Dean and Liaden’s love story is raw, emotional, gut-wrenching, and riveting, but it is also healing, beautiful, and full of love, understanding, patience, and forgiveness. Dean and Liaden were meant to cross paths and form an everlasting relationship. Liaden is the light to Dean’s perpetual darkness, and with her kindness, support, and gentle soul, she helps Dean grasp his demons and fight them head-on. By the end, he was able to find some semblance of peace in the aftermath of devastation. Their love story will leave an everlasting mark on your heart and soul, even long after reading the last page.
Lizzie Stanley developed the emotional tone from the very beginning of the book. It felt like silence with only a buzzing noise ringing in my ears. Were the hallways dark? Were they lit up? Was it MY heart that was loud? Or Dean’s? If you waited for Dean’s story, IMO you will not be disappointed. The story of grief that continues even after the bullets are fired, after the mirror balls are nothing but shards of glass, is done so thoroughly and with so much heart the author will have you hugging your kindle. (Please do read the trigger warning, think about it esp before reading the prologue)
Dean was a tragic hero. He had all this character, talented in his art and tattooing. His brown copper hair and blue eyes once shown so bright. He was full of life, and it got buried deep. How could it not. Innocence was robbed that night. Everyday he survived, but he deserved so much more. For me, it was like witnessing a beautiful man with a blinking exit sign above his head. He had one foot in and one foot out the door. A soul that was still bright but burdened. To think someone else was responsible for so much destruction and yet you feel so much guilt. To see the gang of Wishbone Tattoos was everything. They are a family. A family that wants to hold on to Dean each day until a pink haired, fairy looking, intelligent, Liaden walks into the tattoo shop for Dean. Now she wants to be the one to hold his hand. I loved the group interactions. So much fun. I enjoyed Dean and Liaden falling in love, the way they touched, I felt that in my soul.
Dean was capable of feeling, he felt for the young Liaden who felt lonely as a child. He was always capable of feeling and doing.
His world of grey explodes in shades of pink, and light. Liaden fills the room up with her words, and learns ASL, love changed his world. But it’s not easy. He struggles with the good. He only thinks he can handle temporary. He has his demons, and chases relief, and near the end of the book he realizes it may be difficult to heal but it starts with loving yourself first. He says tough goodbyes and She waits for him. Dean’s love needed no words.
What did I like? Everything! I loved every single thing about this story. Lizzie Stanley writes such heart-wrenching emotional stories and characters. She breaks your heart and then mends it by the end of the book. In this case, I felt heartbreak for Dean, and super sad for Liaden. Dean, facing the experience of on-page school massacre and the severe fallout from that experience, and how it changed the trajectory of his life. It was so painful from Dean's point of view, and all that he was unable to experience in life as a result of the school incident. Liaden also missed out on so many experiences in life, as a result of her brilliant mind and what was seemingly detached parents. Not that they ignored her, they didn't. They simply did not help her to have a normal childhood, and as a result, she was so far removed from her peers that she has gone through life with no friends.
Liaden is perfect for Dean, and he is perfect for her. He needs her, and she needs to be needed. Their connection is beyond incredible. It is so satisfying to see Dean make necessary changes to be better for Liaden, to give her the man who *she* needs!
Lizzie addressed such a sensitive subject (high school massacre) with integrity and realism. She did not flinch away from touching on the aspects that are horrifying to everyone, and does so with grace. Everyone needs to read this book and understand what it can be like to survive a school massacre, what it does to the survivors. Lizzie addresses the need for gun reform in the USA, but this is not a political stance, it is rooted in the necessity to stop school massacres from happening to any more people, something that does not happen in other advanced societies in the world. This need for gun reform is not from the author's viewpoint, but rather from Dean's viewpoint and based solely upon his experiences. It is a 100% realistic view from survivors who have been through what Dean went through.
Everyone needs to read this book. First read the trigger warnings, and proceed cautiously. Be prepared to sob and have your heart torn right from your chest. Just know that Lizzy will make it better before the story ends.
