Allie McCarthy has always been caught between two worlds, with her human father’s heritage on one side and her elven mother on the other, making her life a balancing act. That balance is disrupted when a death in Bleidd’s family means a trip to his family’s home in Fairy and into the depths of elven culture, forcing Allie to face the things she struggles with the most. She knows this is going to be a challenge but nothing could prepare her for the reality of high elven society or the added difficulty of being an empath surrounded by mourning. Dealing with strangers who each have their own agenda, navigating a sea of etiquette, and trying to help Bleidd through his grief is complicated enough but they are quickly drawn into a the death that called them there may not be what it appeared and a series of strange accidents complicate uncovering the truth. They are running out of time to find answers, and the consequences of failing may be fatal.
My name is Morgan Daimler. I have had my poetry and prose published in different places including various anthologies, Circle magazine, Witches and Pagans magazine and Pagan Dawn magazine. I am the author of the urban fantasy series Between the Worlds and (through Cosmic Egg Books) the high fantasy novel Into Shadow. I've written more than a dozen non-fiction works through Moon Books including Fairy Witchcraft, Pagan Portals: the Morrigan, Fairies: A Guide to the Celtic Fair Folk, A New Dictionary of Fairies, and Pagan Portals Aos Sidhe
When a new book comes out in a series you love, sleep will be the sacrifice. I read far too late into the night and am reviewing in a slightly hazy morning as a result.
Chasing Sunset is the newest instalment in Morgan Daimler's 'Between the Worlds' series, opening a window into Bleidd's heretofore mysterious family. No spoilers so I won't go into too many details except to say that this book reflects Daimler's strengths as an author: complexity in characters and relationships, a mystery to move the plot forward and keep the pages turning, a satisfying urban fantasy world that I enjoy returning to time and again.
This is an independently published book. I personally notice a difference in indie books vs traditionally published (where a team is working behind the scenes to polish up to a set standard) - but this is just a note of awareness, not a criticism. I like the variation that indie writing provides and this book is well written and well edited. I did find the ending came more quickly than I would have liked, and the resolution wasn't super surprising, but that's okay by me--I personally am more in it for the characters and relationships than for the plot. I did absolutely love the mother/son theme and resolution.
Overall, an enjoyable, cozy, satisfying read for series fans. The whole series must be read to truly appreciate the books, in my opinion, so if this is the first you are seeing, do yourself a favour and start at book one - you won't regret it!
