Where The Old Roses Grow: Eureka Springs Second Chance Romance

Rate this book
Set in small town Eureka Springs.

One decision. Four lives changed forever.

Rose Aberdeen is pretty sure she’s had her shot at love. Now, all she has left is the bruised heart and messy divorce that proves it. So, swapping the bright lights of her LA psych office for a first-grade classroom in Arkansas, Rose settles into small town —single — life. Until her concern for an unkempt student leads her to the doorstep of a stoic, handsome, single father who upends her heart...

Jahi Adams is in the business of saving people. As the resident firefighter and paramedic at the Eureka Springs station, he carries the weight of a town on his shoulders and the burden of grief in his soul. But when Ms. Aberdeen’s concern for his child blossoms into mutual warm regard, Jahi can’t help but allow hope to take a foothold.

As his feelings for Rose tenderly cross a threshold from which he can’t return, Jahi realizes he can’t hold back forever. But when the big city comes calling, Rose has a choice to make — and building a future seems impossible when they keep tripping over the past.

Gracie Gable grew up in Arkansas, and though she now lives in Santa Cruz, California, she’ll always be a Southerner at heart.

An author, artist, and psychiatrist, Gracie’s writing reflects themes of love, loss, abandonment, and redemption that permeated her decades in the consulting room.

Where The Old Roses Grow was inspired by the beloved garden of a neurosurgeon and Botticelli’s masterpiece The Birth of Venus.

Away from her writing desk, Gracie enjoys creating abstract art, playing the cello, swimming with her husband, and listening to her daughter’s beautiful operatic voice and her stories of adventure.

This is a series of 7 novellas, I enjoyed each of them! I am glad I didn’t have to wait for each book to be released & could read it in one go - because I am too impatient and wanted to keep reading.

I love small town romances - this was no exception. Rose and Jahi connect through Jahi’s sweet daughter Lily. I have to admit when I started reading the story, I wasn’t sure if I liked the style of writing. However, after getting into the book more, I found the simplicity in the writing made it so much easier to follow and just get stuck into the story. I quite liked their story, however, I did find some parts of the book a little slow, but not enough to want to put it down!

I love the elements of humour in this, it’s in no way classed as a rom com story however, the humour breaks it up and makes it even more enjoyable. I actually lol’d a few times, I cried, and I cheered and grrrr’d throughout the book.

I definitely recommend to those who love small town romances. I also want to quickly mention the beautiful cover of the book - absolutely stunning. I want this as a painting in my lounge room!!

Where the Old Roses Grow is the story of Rose and Jahi, a slow progression from teacher and parent, to friends, and eventually to romantic partners. The book itself is actually a collection of seven novella size stories, kind of like a serial.

I found the dialogue to be a little stilted at the beginning, but that did improve as the story continued. I enjoyed the friendship between Rose and Jahi, and Jahi’s little girl Lily. So many of the side characters bloomed from the page and I wanted more of their stories too. In fact, I liked them a little more than Rose and Jahi some of the time, to be honest, as their back and forth was almost too angsty for me at times.

I felt like some parts were repetitive and dragged on at times, but that is likely due to the serial/novella nature of the book sections. Overall, I enjoyed the main storyline and I really appreciated how well researched this story was. So many of the technical details—that may seem minor—are correct and you know how much I love accuracy.

Thank you to the author for the gifted copy!

Disclaimer – this is not my usual genre, and that is totally ok. I am so glad to be part of the review team for Where The Old Roses Grow. I love trying out new things and giving fresh perspectives on things. This is actually 7 short novellas between two covers. Each book is a different person’s journey. This is such a unique concept for me to have read. From my research it appears that they were released weekly, but now you do not have to wait to get it all! (especially since part 1 is a cliffhanger)
Gracie Gable writes so beautifully. Her characters are well developed, and you come to know them and their backgrounds and their way of thinking so clearly that it is like you are in Eureka Springs, AR with them. You will go through all of the emotions with Rose and Jahi and those around them. I laughed outloud, I teared up and I was so thankful that everything was wrapped up by the end. (I usually read suspense/thrillers and I needed an actual ending) I am from the south and actually from a small town, and this was so authentic. I would read this again.

Is life better in a small town? It sure seems that way for Rose when she leaves LA for a small town in Arkansas. Where the Old Roses Grow is an absolutely delightful read told in dual perspective from Rose and Jahi, connecting over total devotion and love for Jahi’s precious daughter. While both Rose and Jahi are healing from broken hearts, the story really speaks on so many levels about starting over after a loss. To my delight, I found that these are short stories that leave you wanting more at the end, so definitely plan to read on! Where the Old Roses Grow is a collection of stories that just brings about a jovial, good feelings mood, despite the inevitable hardships we all face in life. And this book definitely has its fair share of challenges that so many of us face in life but it is shared in a beautiful, authentic way.

A story of two people finding each other spanning the timeframe of a year. With so many pages and parts to sort through as you go, the amounts of twists and turns was thrilling and sometimes anxiety inducing as we see Rose and Jahi really go through it.

Such a profound and touching story, the author makes it very easy to fall in love and feel a kinship with the characters involved, even the side characters. The imagery within the pages and her writing is masterfully done, allowing you to easily imaging a scene in your head.

This story was an absolutely journey that I would read again, and highly recommend to those who love contemporary romance, with a whole lot of second chance going on.

Thank you to Love Books Tours and Gracie Gable for the physical arc!

Where the Old Roses Grow is based in Eureka Springs, AR so of course I had to pick it up! I've been drawn to a lot of 'small town' books lately. Even though this isn't my typical genre, I enjoyed it nonetheless. I received the box set, which was nice because the first 'book' ended in a cliffhanger. It was a little on the long side, but there are technically 7 novellas in one book. It was interesting to read about a town local to me from others prospectives. I felt like this had good character development which just kept building. Each book built upon the last, telling the entire sage of the relationship between Rose and Jahi.
I want to also say this cover is stunning! I absolutely love it. It's what caught my attention at first.

Exalting, atmospheric, wistful, and at times humorous saga of a year in the lives of two good people finding their way to each other. More twists and turns than a country road. I was in suspense the whole time, not knowing if or when we were going to get to the HEA. But the book delivered the relief I was looking for.
It made me cry, it made me laugh, and it made me good and hungry with the yummy food imagery. A gratifying and satisfying read, it ended up being a profound story that touched me deeply when at first I thought it might be a stroll through a rose garden.
It's more than romance, it's a hymn to the power of love and life.

Not a fan of "Where The Old Roses Grow"

This book to me was not a smooth story plot but fragmented throughout. The time sequences did not make any sense, a week here, a week there, three more weeks here. At the same time she had a sick relative she should have been with every week. A full chapter detailing culture, opera, artists, and painting that had nothing to do with the rest of the book. WAY too much information on childbirth. Many more inconsistencies that made me not like this book that would make my review way too long. I definitely would not recommend this book.

This is a 7 book/part series and all must be read in order to understand the story. This is the full set of the books.

Each book progresses in the lives of Rose and Jahi (and some of parts of their families). I enjoyed the writing of the story more than the story itself. Some of middle books felt dragging, but overall they made sense with the full picture. The last book was the darkest, so be sure to check out the trigger warnings before starting the series. The character build was good and solid.

Thank you for the copy, this is my honest opinion.

Where the Old Roses Grow Complete Series

I have enjoyed reading the complete story of Rose and Jahi. This saga was written in serial format with new books released weekly. Here you get the full story in one book. As you follow along with the twists and turns in their relationship, you will get to know Rose and Jahi and the supporting characters. The author does a good job of making the reader feel a kinship with the characters.

The story is split into 7 books and they are all novellas, so you can have an easy, quick, and fun read (in spite that the book is lengthy). I enjoy the story so much. I like the small town romance trope, the writing is easy for me to understand (which is surprising), and the characters are lovely. There are parts that contain issues with some of the characters’ life and mental health. Overall, a great story and I like it!

This is a long romance split into small novellas so you can pace yourself. I do not often read romance, however I was intrigued by the cover of this book. It is a long read, and definitely if you are a fan of romance then this is a book for you. A good beach/holiday read. Definitely an opportunity to get engrossed in Rose and Jahi’s romance in a small town in the US.

This is my first read with the author and I will probably look for others books to read. I did struggle with the pace of the book and found myself skimming pages.

Overall, once I was able to engage myself in the book, it was an easy and pleasant read.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I personally thought the book was a little long. Glad it was broken up in "sections". Recommend reading the "prequel" for background info before reading book. The characters were interesting. Glad it all worked out in the end for all characters.

I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.

It was okay. It felt a little disjointed between the different parts. It felt a little draw put to me, especially Jahi's divorce. Rose's up and down moods became a little annoying. I could not relate to either Jahi or Rose.

This is an absolutely beautiful and amazing story! I loved every single bit of it!! I especially loved the fact that this is a clean romance, with tons of plot, drama and cliché moments that I just ate up <3

I found some bits to be way over descriptive but, Rose and Jahi have both been through so much throughout this story and I am so so glad to have read it! I was deeply engrossed in this story, and couldn't put it down! I 100% recommend this story to everyone. I'm definitely going to re-read this in the future!! 🥰.

This story has such great character development. You see and feel them go through such trying times. Some are minor, and some are potentially life-changing. Their emotions are real and raw; you can sense them coming off the pages. Their backgrounds are emotionally complicated and give great depth to the characters. Their relationship builds nicely and realistically. The chemistry is easy and flows smoothly. This story has tragedy, insightfulness, lightness and romance. Their love and lives takes you on quite a journey.

There are many good things but it felt like it was a bit much. Something’s were too psychological. Too insightful. Made the story feel like it was going in a different direction. It was just a lot. It was too much for me to stay interested at times.

I did individual reviews up to book 4. But then just read through.

This is both a love story between Rose and Jahi, and also a family drama.
It's written in first person narrative, which gives it a personal feel, though it is not a narrative I typically enjoy.
Trigger warnings for familial abandonment, cancer, miscarriage, abortion, addiction, and trauma.
I found the first half of the book quite repetitive, and I didn't feel like it was really going anywhere. The latter half had a bit of a better pace to it, and I definitely read that half much quicker.
The characters are easy to get to know and understand. I really liked the friendship between Rose and Jolene.
Jahi and Rose could, at times, be a bit too sickly sweet for my tastes, but I enjoyed the development of their family.
It's a nice story, and I'm sure audiences will enjoy it.
