This book really pulls you in with its honest look at what’s going on beneath the surface of everyday life. Caught In The Crossfire tells the story of Hayden, an ordinary guy from South London who’s dealing with some pretty complicated family stuff and dangerous situations. It feels like a story many of us can relate to—facing what’s true about our families, making tough choices, and trying to stay true to ourselves.
What makes this story stand out is how real the characters feel. Hayden is just a regular guy, trying to find his way. His background is interesting—biracial, with grandparents who are racist but still love him in their own flawed way. His dad wasn’t around much, and his mom waited until he was grown to start dating again. But now, she’s with someone Hayden immediately doesn’t trust. The person, Tony Lovell, seems like trouble from the start, and Hayden’s instincts tell him he’s in too deep. Going after Tony feels like a dangerous game—like a small fish swimming toward a big shark. But Hayden’s deeply caught up in the mess, and the stakes keep getting higher.

I may have taken those vows, but believe me, when I said till death do us part, it was always [REDACTED] that was going to go first. When that will be-–her time left on this earth, in my orbit-–depends on whether she continues to get on my nerves.
The protagonist, Hayden, is very much, as the title suggests, caught in the crossfire (this is actually my second read by Jay Word, and can I just say I LOVE how apt her titles are-? 🤌✨) when he’s falsely accused of off-ing his maternal grandparents and mother. He knows all too well who the culprit is, but the antagonist (a man you’ll hate to the very core once you read the book) feeds the system money to be on his side, leaving Hayden and a few other people who know the truth, to prove his innocence and put the right man behind bars.
I’m not sure what exactly my expectations were as I dove into the book only knowing that it’s a thriller, but it has certainly exceeded them all. Such an intricate storyline with multiple POVs, covering various social issues like racism, stereotypes, corruption and trafficking- it’s perfect.
One thing I feel the need to say: 70% of my highlights / notes in this one, were new words and phrases. There’s a very high chance you’ll be making a few additions to your vocabulary after reading this one too 🤭

The story doesn’t rush emotions rather it lets fear build quietly. There were moments where I genuinely had to pause because the anger and disbelief felt too real. The multiple POVs worked so well. Instead of confusing the story, they added depth making me question motives constantly

Caught in the Crossfire by Jay Word is not an easy or comfortable read, and that’s where the strength lies. You are drawn into this world, this story, right from the first pages, and you are left feeling like you are stuck in a situation where your good intentions aren't going to save you, where something could go wrong at any moment, and that’s the kind of tension that stays with you throughout the book. The title, really, seems to hit the mark, the kind of mark that’s painful to witness, as you watch the protagonist succumb to situations that they do not want to find themselves in, just by virtue of their position at the time.
But what struck me in particular was how very real the story was. The characters are imperfect, easily hurt, and far too real for their own good, which makes their plight all the more difficult to deal with. Jay Word doesn’t hold back! She knows that choices have consequences, and sometimes even doing what’s right won’t bring happiness. This book will give you plenty of reason to pause and ponder long after you finish it, wondering about what’s fair, right, and simply how unpredictable life can truly be.

Where do I begin? This book reminded me of why my first love when it comes to reading has always been intense stories full of drama, suspense, and twists.
This book shows us how Haydens life is complex, dysfunctional, and challenging is so many ways. He is biracial and this book shows how being biracial can often be challenging even when trying to navigate the stormy sea known as your family.
This book was a page turner because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Just when I thought I had things figured out there was a turn in the road and I LOVED it.
This book touches on so many serious issues but its done in a tasteful way that doesnt take away from the story. I devoured this quickly because I lost sleep turning pages with a smile and often my mouth open from shock. I need more books like this in my life and you must read this.

Just finished Caught in the Crossfireby Jay Word and omg, it pulled me in way faster than I expected. The story feels gritty and real right from the start, especially with how Hayden’s normal and eventless life slowly spirals into something much darker. The book's setting of South London is vivid without being overdone, and as you read, the tension builds in a way that keeps you flipping pages because you know something bad is coming — you just don’t know when or how. And then, you don't even realise how fast it ended.

I really loved this book while reading. I finished this whole book in one sitting . I loved how author takes you on the Journey between the past & present which kept me captivated and builds the knowledge of each character.
Beyond the mystery, the book doesn't shy away from real-world issues like racism, human trafficking, abuse of power, domestic violence, and sexual assault. None of it feels exploitative or overly graphic, but it definitely hits hard and adds real weight to the story.
I never ever read such kind of book but after reading this .....I would say its totally worth to read as this book is not just crime thriller but also filled with lots of wisdom & you would learn a lot of thing while reading

This book does NOT ease you in. Imagine waking up to cops telling you that you’ve murdered your own family...no warning, no buildup, just straight-up panic. That’s Caught in the Crossfire. Every chapter feels risky, tense, and like one wrong move will blow everything up. You’re inside everyone’s head seeing lies, secrets, half-truths, messy emotions and it makes you distrust absolutely everyone.
Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the book laughs in your face and says “nice try.” I was constantly side-eyeing characters, changing my theories, and mentally screaming WHO CAN I TRUST?? The pacing is relentless and the suspense is suffocating.

A book written with so much of raw emotions it left me in tears. I was fully prepared for what the book had in store yet there were parts that even I could not have guessed. This book really touches the dark parts of your soul.
First of all, I loved how the entire book had so many pov's. It really helped in knowing what everyone thought. Each character's thoughts and feelings added so much to the story. Haydens's character made me cry, the abuse he went through was just unfair. The fact that he was the one who was dealing with the result of some else's problem. It reminds me of how cruel this world is. A child is treated so badly and damaged for no reason, yet people are so unaware.
This book is a cry for help, to look at the other side of what victims go through. If you are someone who has gone through any of this, no matter how small, then this book might help you. Not a lot but will definitely make you seen. Take this book in yours and let it consume your soul.

I really liked the idea and the premise of this book and I think it was written fantastically.
I did however find that I struggled to keep up in parts as the story is told through multiple POVs and multiple timelines so I found it was quite a task to work out what was happening.
It is a fast paced, crime fiction thriller set in London. It’s intense and follows an extremely toxic family. The writing style is great and you can tell how much has been put into this book by the author.
It’s quite dark in parts so I would recommend reading any trigger warnings if that is something that concerns you!
I recommend this to anyone who likes a crime fiction thriller.
Overall, I give this 4 stars!

Okay ...... woah damn this book really made me doubt every known person . Its a fast paced gripping crime thriller , Hayden —a boy in his 20s was arrested for the crime he never committed — of killing his mother and his grandparents . It was different from usual thrillers as we will know who is the killer from the beginning but how he killed or suspense revolves around that .it involves racism, and triggering elements , family secrets, betrayal etc. I was hooked from the beginning.
Its written in multiple POVs but it wasn't difficult to understand It has emotional depth . I never hated the villain in the thriller Books as I hated in this one , I mean I wish I could k*ll him with my own hands . 🥰

This book genuinely surprised me. From reading her first work to this , Ms.Word has come a long way. It shows real versatility and confidence for a debut novel. As someone who reads a lot of thrillers, this story felt both intriguing and eye opening.

When I say I read this book in 24hrs I literally mean I kept turning those pages when I really should have been sleeping or just adulting!
I loved how it flowed between different POVs and over different timelines. Every time I thought I had it figured out I'd find out another piece of the story that changed everything.
This was like a perfect whodunnit and kept me guessing the whole way through. I would love to know if you read it and manage to figure it out!

This book is a crime thriller with amazing suspense and strong emotional depth. The story followed Hayden, an ordinary man pulled into a dangerous web of family secrets, corruption, and betrayal. His struggles were real and raw. I was hooked from the first chapter, although all the the twist and suspence. The characters were so layered and add such. depth to the story. The journey of him finding his identity, who should we trust and who don't, and the weight of difficult choices were all so intense and good. I love this read.

You want to get him, as a motherly person and hug him hard enough to take away his pain. It's a cruel world we live in.
As a person, who seeks to protect others and empower them to stand up for themselves, I got so attached to these characters. For instance, Hayden's mum whose husband, Errol(black), is an emotional abuser. Not only that...he's really messed up and willing to mess up the lives of others. Geez! Give me a bat, I'd love to teach him a good lesson! The harder you hate Errol, the more you'll root for Hayden. BUT THERE'S A TWIST. That's all I gotta say.
Challenges of interracial relationships. Chances are slim to none where you find such a couple that's over all those jibes from people on either side of the family. It's hard. I can only imagine that it is. It takes hard skin to ignore what society has to say about your relationship for it to weather the test of time.
Struggles of being a mixed race. I think it's hard when you don't fall on any side. You don't identify as white nor black. You're mixed. I think that such people have a different set of challenges when it comes to racism. But we are all human that's the baseline.
I wish we would use that in our relationships with people. Not skin colour. Not nationality. But HUMANITY. This book got me into a very philosophical humanitarian mood. Tony Lovell, GOODNESS ME! Let me not get my hands on you!
I recommend anyone with a heart that beats to read this book!
