A modern-day, relatable collection of personal development tools, The Examined Life allows the reader to assess where they are, where they want to be, and what lies in the space between the two. In equal measures wake-up call and guide for those seeking the best life possible, this book is already capturing the attention of the readers who have read advance copies.
More than your standard self-improvement guide, The Examined Life presents clear steps to changing your life that resonate to the reader through a series of questions that force self-reflection. Full of honesty and hard-won insight, it asks the questions that we all ask ourselves from time to time, but rarely answer completely before moving onto the next distraction. In addition to asking these questions, it offers tools to digest and process them so that we can let them steep and integrate into how we live so that their answers manifest organically. It begs us to find our voice, to find something to believe in, and to find the words necessary to speak our truth. This book is a call to the now, to the present moment, all in the hope that it will spark a fire in the mind of the reader to examine the quality of life being led.
Written to bring guidance to modern-day people living with modern-day issues, The Examined Life is written in a refreshingly accessible, inviting, stark and honest style, intended to resonate with anyone who has ever hoped for better in their life and the world around them.
Got so much out of this book. As author recommends in the intro, take in small pieces as you need. One of those books it's best to take a little at a time to get the best impact.
"See yourself as others do, even for a moment, and then understand that the only person standing in your way of living a full life is you. The only thing standing in your way is fear. And the same way you would tell your closest friends and family members to never let fear dictate what they should and should not do in this life, you should take that same advice. The choices you make and how you perceive them, free of fear, will determine your reality. They'll determine your happiness" (127).
I thought this was a very good book. It was written fairly well, however, the content was not original. I would recommend it though if you haven't read much on self-awareness, living a purposeful life, finding your passion, etc. It's a quick read and it summarizes these areas well. It would have been nice to see a few more references to some of the original thinking, but, that's just my opinion!
Excellent incite! This book communicates issues, concerns and problems that we have all encountered but are rarely able to express. The tools Bram introduces are easy to apply in everyday life.
