As a person who was very into the game back around 2010 or so as a high school student, it was fun to revisit the memories of those times while also getting a nice catch-up summary of how the game has evolved in the last few years where I haven't dipped in nearly as much.
You'll get a solid overview of where the game started and where it's gone, but don't expect a deep dive into any specific topic or a whole trove of behind the scenes content. Expect to get pretty much a few concept sketches and some key art for the major mobs and updates along with some neat community-ran projects.

That was pretty cool!
I would like to see more details on each individual update, rather then just having a brief snippet about them. Maybe they can release a book in the future that’s specifically update related.
Overall though, that was an enjoyable read for a hardcore fan like me.

3.25, rounded down.
My thoughts on this are wide ranging and varied and also diverse and assorted.
- Nostalgia central oh my gosh. The beautiful full color game screencaps. The inclusion of developmental sketches. The way it all LOOKS? This is a gorgeous book. Minecraft is a gorgeous game. I love the way the world has come together exclusively because it means I got to check out a coffee table book about Minecraft from my public library.
- I felt that a lot of the time I really could have used way more information. I loved the spread about bees but it was so image heavy (and tbh white space [yellow space??] heavy) that I just felt it was missing something.
- Conversely there were a lot of pages where I was like... does this need a whole 2 spreads? does this need even one spread??? Like the section about collaborations was weirdly long. I wanted so much more on SMPs and the Uncensored Library. (and maybe that's just my interests talking but I still think a book about Minecraft history did not need a whole spread of all the other books that have ever bene published related to Minecraft it felt like selling out a little lol)
- Some of the choices as far as ordering the chapters felt a bit arbitrary and confusing. The groupings particularly? And also it was like... mostly chronological but then sometimes I'd be reading about caves and cliffs (released in 2021) and then it'd go say "in 2018.... "and talk about that for like 2 paragraphs of the 4 on the page. Just a little whiplashy I guess.
- Relatedly how the HELL has it been nearly 7 years since update aquatic. I hate the passage of time

As soon as I saw this book on the shelf, I knew I needed to buy it and read it. As an avid Minecraft fan, it was really fascinating to read about how everything began since I didn’t start playing Minecraft until Pocket Edition was released. I enjoyed following along and remembering older updates trying to place where I was when I first played them. I also learned things about Minecraft I would have never learned about otherwise! For example: the games music drew inspiration from Tove Jansson’s “Moonin” books! The visuals in this book are also stunning. Seeing the concept art for mobs, biomes, new blocks, etc. brought me so much joy. Minecraft will always hold a special place in my heart and now I have a beautiful book to help me remember the positive impact this game has had on my life.
