La mère de Tripp lui a confisqué sa guitare tant qu'il ne sera pas plus sociable et meilleur élève. Le matin de la rentrée, Tripp décide d'emprunter en cachette la vieille guitare du lycée. Lyla, quant à elle excellente élève et musicienne hors pair, a besoin de s'entraîner pour ses concerts de violoncelle. Les deux adolescents doivent occuper la même salle de répétition du lycée, Tripp les jours impairs, Lyla les jours pairs. Ils entament une correspondance, d'abord acide puis plus complice, en se laissant des petits papiers dans la salle. Bientôt le guitariste rebelle et la violoncelliste sage que tout oppose se retrouvent autour de leur passion commune : la musique. Cette relation intense leur apprendra à se découvrir eux-mêmes et les aidera à traverser les pires drames...
