Hierarchy of Crows: A teen & young adult dystopian-scifi adventure romance in space
He is an angsty, controlling king who’s oppressing his people. She’s a normal girl who lives to help the underdogs. Fate thrusts them together to join forces permanently, but she knows his secrets will kill her family if she doesn’t stop him.
The people of Haumea want to make peace with the futuristic colony living inside Eris—who received the bulk of funding when their colonies formed—so Marishel and Quin travel to the mined-out dwarf planet, intending to sign a peace treaty, merging with them in mutually beneficial ways, and finding a cure for the sickness killing their citizens.
Marishel first notices the subjugated people called Synths, who were once sick, too, and don’t like to talk about it. She feels in her bones that King Binary is hiding something dangerous and plays a clandestine teen detective, visiting everywhere they direct her, but the Synths remain a mystery, as does the cure to their illness. Marishel suspects the Erisians keep the Synths as slaves, and if she can prove it, she can stop the signing of the treaty and take it to the intercolony tribunal. Marishel struggles to look for clues, finding more questions than answers.
Since the Blood Match, Marishel’s relationship with Ambassador Quin has grown from friendship to love, and they had hoped the trip would be a good vacation, giving them time alone, but Quin's main goal is the treaty, and he doesn’t see a hidden crime everywhere he goes. However, he is happy to let Marishel bravely look for a secret he doesn’t think is there … until Marishel’s thrilling adventures risk their tenuous bond with the unstable king and threaten herself and him, the treaty, and the Haumeans back home.
Marishel believes that owning Synths is only the tip of what the king has done to his people. The king suspects her of digging too close to his reality and limits her actions further. Quin becomes frustrated with her impulsiveness, but if she can’t provide concrete evidence of her suspicions, he will be forced to move forward with the treaty, and she is sure the king will tyrannize and enslave the Haumeans once they merge.

This is the second book in this series, and wow, did it have some twists to it! Marishel and Quin go on a diplomatic trip to Eris, to make a deal with the leader of that planet. When they get there, they find his son is now King, something he didn't bother to tell them before they got there. There's quite a bit more he didn't tell them, about how the planet is run, and who the Synths are, and why they are so ill treated. Marishel gets into a little trouble, of course, and Quin tries to help her out, but King Binary keeps playing games to interfere with their relationship. Meanwhile, back on Haumea, Quin's mother has returned and wants to keep Quin and Marishel apart. She is planning all sorts of nefarious plots to separate the two,but the plot twist at the end may be the biggest obstacle of them all. You're going to have to read it to find out what it is!! I enjoyed this one, just not as much as the first. I now have to wait for the next one to find out what happens to our young lovers.
